Document Actions SEACOOS educators made a presentation for the theme "COSEE: Enhancing the Broader Impacts of Ocean Science Research" at the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography/The Oceanography Society Ocean Research 2004 Conference on February 18, 2004, in Honolulu, Hawaii. The abstract and citation follow.
Abstract
Of the many federal and state efforts to increase the connections between scientists and educators, the National Science Foundation's Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence are testing diverse models to provide sustained pathways for interaction. SouthEast COSEE, regionally targeting GA, SC and NC, is applying four strategies: (1) providing the summer workshop settings in which a selected group of science teachers hear presentations from ocean scientists and experience some of the research techniques on site in a marine laboratory over a week's time; (2) building a setting with different types of nonformal institutional facilities, such as aquariums and museums, where teachers and scientists meet for a day; (3) initiating dialogue with the ocean science research community to assist with NSF proposals in regard to Criterion Two; and, (4) developing an electronic newsletter where research topics are highlighted and also lead educators to Sea Grant publications.

JJ First of all, let me ask you How did you get started teaching? And Did you ever have a mentor F. Thomas Guerrero started dancing socially in 1994.
http://www.salsaweb.com/instructorsforum/ThomasGuerrero.htm
It is great pleasure to introduce to you a fabulous dancer, teacher, and performer from NYC, Mr. Thomas Guerrero, the director of the wonderful dance team, "SANTO RICO DANCE COMPANY"! Our Interview... JJ: First of all, let me ask you: How did you get started teaching? And Did you ever have a mentor that sort of really got you involved with it? I started dancing socially in 1992, and was recruited in 1995 from the social scene by my friend, mentor and then director of Santo Rico, Wilton Beltre. To say the least, Wilton introduced me to a whole new world and perspective of dancing and music by teaching me how to count through learning his choreography. JJ: Do you believe that a really good dancer doesn’t necessarily make for a really good teacher? Absolutely… just because you’re good at one trait, it doesn’t mean you have it all. You can be a very good instructor and a not-so-good dancer, and a very good performer even, and a not-so-good instructor, or dancer. However, I believe that all who represent the business should be good at all 3, e.g., instruction, dancing, performing, in order to be able to market and represent themselves and the business more effectively. This also sets a standard for all those aspiring to eventually do the same. JJ: What’s the hardest thing to teach a beginner student?

Thomas Middleton (1580-1627)
This website grew out of my desire to have the plays of Thomas Middleton in one collection, personally edited and available on word processor. Having done that, I thought it worthwhile to take the next step and bring Middleton to the Web. One inspiration was seeing what a convenient resource there is in a Complete Online Shakespeare , which I usedalong with the OED, a Bible search engine , and other resources, electronic and hard-printto edit these plays. In editing, I've consulted quarto facsimiles and critical editions when and where available, and I've hypertexted significant textual decisions, along with glossed words and phrases; so while these editions are not refereed, a good deal of care has been taken in their preparation. The primary reason for these plays being here is the same as for my gathering them together for myselfto be enjoyed. At the end of the project I plan to put each play's textual apparatus online, as well provide a separate and central database for glossary items. If you just happened to surf to this site, would like a quick overview of Middleton's life and have subscribed to Encyclopedia Britannica, click

My research involves the use of naturally occurring isotopes as tracers in water and climate studies and in closely related aspects of environmental isotope geochemistry. The efforts of my research group are dedicated to documentation and interpretation of variations in the relative abundances of the rare stable isotopes of oxygen ( O) and hydrogen ( H) in precipitation, surface and ground waters, as well as these isotopes and those of carbon ( C) and nitrogen ( N) in materials like tree rings and lake sediments, as indicators of past environmental history and ongoing hydrologic and climatic change. My current activities include leadership of ISOMAP, an initiative of

THOMAS HUNT MORGAN AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY
Genes, Chromosomes, and the Origins of Modern Biology
Eric R. Kandel
. . . . the rise and development of genetics to mature age is another instance of an all-comprising and all-affecting generalization based upon an overwhelming body of integrated facts, . . . [and] will rank in the history of science with such other great events as mentioned, . . . The basic tenets of genetics have already influenced decisively all parts of biology after what has been only a short span in the history of science; and further that beyond this, many other fields of science have fallen under the spell and we have every reason to believe that genetics is bound to remain in a pivotal position in the future. Richard B. Goldschmidt, The Impact of Genetics Upon Science When future historians turn to examine the major intellectual accomplishments of the twentieth century, they will undoubtedly give a special place to the extraordinary achievements in biology, achievements that have revolutionized our understanding of life's processes and of disease. Important intimations of what was to happen in biology were already apparent in the second half of the nineteenth century. Darwin had delineated the evolution of animal species, Mendel had discovered some basic rules about inheritance, and Weissman, Roux, Driesch, de Vries, and other embryologists were beginning to decipher how an organism develops from a single cell. What was lacking at the end of the nineteenth century, however, was an overarching sense of how these bold advances were related to one another.

BABEWATCH Halfpipe Hottie: J.J. Thomas January 28, 2003
by Brooke Geery One of the most attractive qualities a guy can have is to not boast that he's attractive. J.J. Thomas, a shy pro snowboarder with plenty to brag about, has the humility thing down to a science. With an X Games Superpipe gold medal and a Winter Olympics halfpipe bronze in the bag (both 2002 wins), as well as several awesome sponsors and head-turning riding skills, he doesn't need his good looks to get by. Birthplace: Fairbanks, Alaska
Hometown: Golden, Colorado
Birthday: April 6, 1981
Sponsors: Oakley, Ride, Ogio, Right Guard, Celtek, Nestea Cool, Elite Interactive Cards, Breckenridge Resort SG: What do you look for in a girl?
J.J.: Well, being cute helps, but the bottom line is they need some brains, a sense of humor, and confidence. Do you like girls who snowboard? Snowboard girls are cool. It's just nice if your girl likes to shred, 'cause then on chill days you can cruise with themand that beats hangin' at the mall or somethin' horrible like that. What kind of music do you listen to?

The second of the cathedrals of Armagh, the Roman Catholic Cathedral is sited on a hill to compete with the older Church of Ireland Cathedral . This cathedral has a chequered history with many architects involved. The original building was commenced in 1840 by Thomas Duff of Newry in a 16th century gothic idiom. This was stopped due to the Famine. It was started again in 1850 by J.J. McCarthy is his favoured 14th century gothic and completed around 1870.

The exterior of the cathedral is quite austere. Despite the twin spires on the main front, the exterior has none of the decoration associated with other cathedrals being built in Ireland at this time. The main external decoration is an arcade of statues over the main doorway as well as a large window. The interior has been altered over the years with Vatican II re-ordering removing much of the original elaborate altars and fittings

Genes that control the fidelity of endoplasmic reticulum to Golgi transport identified as suppressors of vesicle budding mutations
MJ Elrod-Erickson and CA Kaiser Department of Biology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge 02139, USA. Although convergent evidence suggests that proteins destined for export from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) are separated from resident ER proteins and are concentrated into transport vesicles, the proteins that regulate this process have remained largely unknown. In a screen for suppressors of mutations in the essential COPII gene SEC13, we identified three genes (BST1, BST2/EMP24, and BST3) that negatively regulate COPII vesicle

180. HOASM: Thomas Weelkes
Biography, selected discography, and links to composers of early music complementing the Here Of A Sunday Morning radio program.
http://www.hoasm.org/IVM/Weelkes.html
Thomas Weelkes
Thomas Weelkes, whose professional career spanned one of the most fertile periods in England's musical history, is without doubt one of her finest composers. Like Purcell, he had a vivid imagination and love of experiment, and died prematurely at the peak of his creative powers, but not before he had composed a very large amount of music. Nowhere are Weelkes' outstanding musical abilities more evident than in his four sets of madrigals, which appeared between 1597 and 1608, and his splendidly sonorous full anthems. The English madrigal school reached its peak with Weelkes, the most original madrigalist, and John Wilbye , the most polished; both were deeply indebted to Thomas Morley , both surpassed him. As a madrigalist, Thomas Weelkes owed a great debt to Thomas Morley , who had done more than anyone to establish the Italian form on English soil. But while Weelkes' madrigals may lack Morley's lightness of touch and fondness for nimble counterpoint, they are much more adventurous and possess stronger links with English musical tradition. Similarly, although Weelkes does not display the same elegant and carefully shaded sensitivity to the text as John Wilbye , arguably England's greatest madrigalist, he pushed the use of musical imagery to its limits and often attained a magnificent sonority in his writing.
