    Anatole France
    De Franse schrijver Anatole France (1844-1924) heette eigenlijk Jacques-François A. Thibault en werd geboren in Parijs. Anatole France was de zoon van een boekhandelaar. In 1868 debuteerde hij met een studie over Alfred de Vigny.
    Net als Émile Zola koos deze humanistische schrijver partij voor Dryfus in diens affaire. France was een dogmatisch man met een grote afkeer voor kerk en leger. De geschiedenis van Frankrijk speelt een grote rol in verschillende van zijn boeken, zoals "L 'ile des pingouins" en "La vie de Jeanne d'Arc" (1908).
    In 1922 kwam Anatole France in aanvaring met de Katholieke kerk. Omdat de schrijver deel uitmaakte van de communistische partij en atheïst was werden zijn boeken verboden door de kerk.
    Anatole France was als literair recensent verbonden aan het dagblad Le Temps. Een groot aantal van deze artikelen kwam later ook in boekvorm beschikbaar.
    In 1921 werd hem de Nobelprijs voor literatuur toegekend.
