When William Makepeace Thackeray began his literary career, English prose fiction was dominated by Charles Dickens. Thackeray formed his style in conscious reaction against Dickens's programmatic indictment of social evils and against the artificial style and sentimental falsification of life and moral values of the popular historical romances. The familiar, moralizing commentaries of Thackeray's narrators, as integral a part of his novels as the characters themselves, expressed their author's detached moral disillusionmentusually touched with sentimentality. Although critical of society, Thackeray was never a radical intellectual, remaining basically conservative. He initiated a tendency toward plainer style and greater realism in the portrayal of the commonplace,.....

Apparently begun in 1845, Vanity Fair a name derived from a phrase in Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress that allegedly occurred to Thackeray in a dreamwas originally published serially in 19 monthly numbers of 20 parts (the last issue being a double one) by Bradbury and Evans, the publishers of the satirical magazine Punch . The first part appeared in January, 1847 and the last in July, 1848; the series was entitled Vanity Fair: Pen and Pencil Sketches of English Society The novel appeared in book form immediately following the final part in 1848. The volume contains forty full-page plates, including the engraved title page, and 150 woodcuts by the author. The copy shown is the first issue of the first edition, which contains the suppressed woodcut of the "Marquis of Steyne," the text that reads, "Mr. Pitt," instead of "Sir Pitt," and other variants.

Biographical Notes
William Makepeace Thackeray
One of the most prolific and beloved novelists of the Victorian Era, William Makepeace Thackeray was born in Alipur, India, on July 18, 1811, the only child of Richmond Thackeray, a successful administrator for the East India Company, and his wife, Anne Becher. Thackeray's father passed away four years later, and young William was sent to boarding school in London. Many of his early experiences in India and later in boarding school found their way into several of his popular works, including Vanity Fair and The Newcomes After his premature departure from Cambridge University and a half-hearted attempt at law school in 1834, Thackeray moved to Paris to concentrate on his art. While studying there, he met and married Isabella Getkin Creach Shawe (1818-1893). The couple had three daughters, Anne Isabella, Harriet Marrian, and Jane who died at age eighteen months. Soon after her daughter's death, Isabella Thackeray suffered a nervous breakdown from which she never recovered. Thackeray was then left with the responsibility of raising two young daughters and supporting his wife who would remain in various sanitoriums for the rest of her life.

    I was from India, and I lived from 1811-1863. Print or Buy my poetry? View comments Add to favorites? William Makepeace Thackeray was one of the great novelists of the English Victorian Age. His Vanity Fair is one of the finest and best-known novels in English literature. Thackeray wrote in a colorful, lively style, with a simple vocabulary and clearly structured sentences. These qualities, combined with his honest view of life, give him an important place in the history of realistic literature.
    Early career . Thackeray was born on July 18, 1811, in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India. At the age of 5, he was sent to England to live with relatives and begin his education. He was lonely and unhappy during his school years. "I have the same recollection of Greek in youth that I have of castor oil," Thackeray once said. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge University, in 1829. No great scholar, he left after a year and a half to travel abroad.

The Ballad of Bouillabaisse
A STREET there is in Paris famous,
For which no rhyme our language yields,
The New Street of the Little Fields;
But still in comfortable case;
The which in youth I oft attended,
To eat a bowl of Bouillabaisse.
A sort of soup or broth, or brew,
Or hotchpotch, of all sorts of fishes,
That Greenwich never could outdo;
Green herbs, red peppers, mussels, saffern,
Soles, onions, garlic, roach, and dace; In that one dish of Bouillabaisse. And true philosophers, methinks, Who love all sorts of natural beauties, Should love good victuals and good drinks. And Cordelier or Benedictine Might gladly, sure, his lot embrace, Nor find a fast-day too afflicting Which served him up a Bouillabaisse. I wonder if the house still there is? Yes, here the lamp is, as before; Still opening oysters at the door. I recollect his droll grimace; And hope you liked your Bouillabaisse. The table still is in the nook; This well-known chair since last I took.

DINNER
"Everything is done at dinner in the century in which we live, and it is by these dinners that men are governed." Charles Pierre Monselet, French journalist and author (1825-1888) "If the soup had been as warm as the wine, if the wine had been as old as the turkey, if the turkey had had a breast like the maid, it would have been a swell dinner." Duncan Hines, food and lodging critic (1880-1959) "After a good dinner, one can forgive anybody, even one's relatives." Oscar Wilde "One morning, as I went to the freezer door, I asked my wife, 'What should I take out for dinner?' Without a moment's hesitation, she replied, 'Me.'" anonymous "A man who can dominate a London dinner table can dominate the world."
