Synopsis
Sunnybank Lad won a million friends through my book, "LAD: A DOG"; and through the Lad-anecdotes in "Buff: A Collie." These books themselves were in no sense great. But Laddie was great in every sense; and his life-story could not be marred, past interest, by my clumsy way of telling it.
People have written in gratifying numbers asking for more stories about Lad. More than seventeen hundred visitors have come all the way to Sunnybank to see his grave. So I wrote the collection of tales which are now included in "Further Adventures of Lad." Most of them appeared, in condensed form, in the Ladies' Home Journal.

Kathleen Rais. Albert Payson Terhune: A Bibliography of Primary Works.
During the 1920s, Albert Payson Terhune (1872-1942) gained worldwide fame and financial success after the publication of Lad: A Dog (1919) and later volumes such as Bruce (1920), and Lad of Sunnybank (1929). Terhune's stories of Collies has appeared in serial form beginning in 1915, at a time when he was a frequent contributor to numerous fiction magazines, and had already established his popular reputation with his first best seller Caleb Conover, Railroader (1907) and a prequel, The Fighter
Terhune published his first book at age 24, and had a long and successful career as a journalist. He adapted many of his short stories and novels for the screen, and published works of history and volumes of literary essays, but he is chiefly remembered for his dog stories.
In her foreward to this acrefully documented and thorough study, Terhune scholar and collector Katherine Rais writes, "A comprehensive bibliography of Terhune's primary works has been needed to aid collectors in indentifying and appraising their own collections, to encourage appreciation of one of the most popular writers in the 20th century, and perhaps most of all to correct the misconceptions that librarians, scholars, booksellers and collectors have about his work and his place in American letters.'
