ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/docs/books/gutenberg/etext94/algif10.zip The key is to search for "illustrations" in the title. This was not at first apparent to me. I was looking for keywords in the "Notes" field, thinking perhaps illustrations would be included with the etexts themselves. Apparently some PDF versions do contain cover art, but collections of images are entered in under a seperate title. Still, "illustrations" only turned up two matches, so it seems that there is much work to be done in this area (unless they're hiding the images somewhere and my search strategy just sucks ;) Anyway, before we re-invent the wheel, an exhaustive search should be done to determine if there aren't already "free image" projects out there that meet our needs. I'm beginning to poke through my favourite portals to see what I can find. I'll post anything else that turns up. Ben nSLUG http://www.nslug.ns.ca

John Tenniel, the son of a dancing-master, was born in London in 1820. Tenniel attended the Royal Academy but left in disgust at the quantity of teaching he received. When Tenniel was sixteen he began having his paintings exhibited at the Suffolk Street Galleries. He was soon recognised as a talented artist and he received several commissions, including the production of a fresco for the House of Lords
Tenniel had some cartoons accepted by Punch Magazine and one showing Lord John Russell as David with his sword of truth attacking Cardinal Wiseman, as the Roman Catholic Goliath, upset Richard Doyle so much that he left the magazine. Mark Lemon , the editor, decided to replace Doyle with Tenniel and in December, 1850, he became a staff cartoonist with Punch. At first Tenniel was reluctant to take the post arguing that he was more concerned with "High Art". He also doubted his ability to produce humourous cartoons. He asked one friend: "Do they suppose that there is anything funny about me?"
John Tenniel gradually took over from John Leech as the producer of the main political cartoon in the magazine. Tenniel was a

of Alice In Wonderland
There have been any number of illustrators for this delightfully nonsensical tale over the years. The appearance of the characters has also tended to change, according to each artists' style. Each set of illustrations was richly evocative of the tale, however, and each has contributed to our continued enjoyment of this story. The work of several of the earliest illustrators has been chosen for inclusion here, along with two more contemporary artists. Sound a wee bit surreal? Perhaps. But then, so is the story itself. To the best of our knowledge, this BEDTIME-STORY CLASSIC is the only rendering of Alice In Wonderland which successfully melds the nearly complete works of multiple artists with the tale itself.

Book Illustrator, Political Cartoonist and Watercolour Artist
Tenniel in a self-portrait dated 1889
During his long life Tenniel exhibited paintings, produced a weekly cartoon practically without a break for almost fifty years, and contributed a large number of illustrations to literature during one of the most fruitful and innovative periods of the medium's history. His life covers the whole of Victoria's reign, with generous overlaps into the preceding Georgian and succeeding Edwardian eras. As both artist and observer he was involved in the mainstream art world of his day, beginning his career with serious ambitions as a monumental fresco painter, and exhibiting at the Royal Academy and at the Society of British Artists' premises in Suffolk Street. His working life, from the year of his first exhibition to the date of his retirement from Punch , stretches from 1835 to 1901, while his activities in book illustration took place between 1842 and 1878. Finally, while his work on Punch (1850-1901) diverted his energies from his early 'high art' aspirations, it brought him into week-by-week journalistic contact with the social and political life of his day, and made him one of the most influential commentators on it.

SIR JOHN TENNIEL (1820 - 1914)
In 1865, Charles Lulwidge Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, wrote "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." Accompanying the prose were twenty-six black-and-white illustrations created by Sir John Tenniel, the then renowned political cartoonist for the satirical British magazine, Punch. The abridged, but colored, edition of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" was published in 1890 and contained twenty color plates by Tenniel. Tenniel first made a name for himself as an illustrator of the 1848 edition of "Aesop's Fables." This acclaim brought him to the attention of Punch magazine where he was hired as second cartoonist in 1851. He was promoted to principal cartoonist in 1864. Tenniel was a superb illustrator of creatures of whimsy and fantasy. He refused to use live models or draw from nature saying that he had "a wonderful memory of observation." It is said that Tenniel somewhat resembled his own drawing of the White Knight of "Alice" fame. BIRTHPLACE: London, England EDUCATION: RA Schools
