Beeton, 1852-1879) Like the Ladies Monthly Museum , the Englishwoman and domestic magazine presented its readers with fiction, recipes, domestic advice and coloured fashion plates. One innovation was the quiz. This was a section entitled, "The Sybilline interpreter". Punch is the most successful of the many humorous magazines produced in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It was founded by Mark Lemon and Henry Mayhew. Originally it had a strong reforming intention and specialised in cartoons and articles which as well as being political and social in their subject matter, revealed the plight of the poor of London.

HName: Cavalcaselle, G[iovanni] B[attista] DateBorn: 1819 Placeborn: Legnago (Verona environs), Italy Datedied: 1897 Placedied: Rome, Italy HDescrip: Artist and art historian; collaborator with Joseph A. Crowe on the first modern history of art to be written in English. Cavalcaselle studied studio painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice. When his interests changed to art history, he moved to Milan and Florence to study renaissance art. In 1847 he met Joseph Archer Crowe (q.v.), a British art historian in Italy. The following year, Cavalcaselle joined in the 1848 revolutions sweeping Europe. For his part in the Italian revolt, he was condemned to death and force to flee. He settle in London in 1850 working for George Scharf (q.v.) as a illustrator of art. He may also have worked as a restorer. Cavalcaselle's reputation as a connoisseur was already great. Charles Lock Eastlake (q.v), then president of the Royal Academy , employed Cavalcaselle and two other eminent art connoisseurs, Gustav Waagen (q.v.) and Johann David Passavant (q.v.) that same year to write about pictures for the catalog of the Permanent Gallery of Art in Liverpool. In 1851 Cavalcaselle supported Seymour Stocker Kirkup (1788-1880) in Kirkup's attribution of a portrait of Dante by Giotto in the Bargello fresco of Paradise in Florence. The following year, Cavalcaselle was asked by Crowe, with whom he shared living quarters in London, to help with Crowe's book on fifteenth-century Flemish painters. This resulted in their famous collaboration and the earliest work in English of serious art scholarship

Punch
For over 160 years Punch was the doyen of English comic periodicals. Founded in 1861 by the engraver Ebenezer Landells (1808-1860) and writer Henry Mayhew (1812-1887), its moral commentary and robust humour presided over the arts, politics, and current affairs. Within two decades Punch had firmly established itself amongst an overwhelmingly upper middle-class readership. Initially subtitled "The London Charivari" after the satirical French paper Charivari , its early political outlook was unquestionably radical. Against the backdrop of Chartism and revolutionary unrest in continental Europe, Punch stood as a satirical refuge against privilege and pomp. Despite its relative success, Punch 's financial future remained uncertain until its acquisition by Bradbury and Evans (later Bradbury and Agnew) in 1842. During the second half of the nineteenth century Punch was challenged by a burgeoning group of rival publications - led by the Liberal leaning Fun and its Conservative rival Judy . But the strength of Punch 's cartoons helped sustain its popularity. Whilst William Thackeray (1811-1863) and editor Mark Lemon (1809-1870) penned memorable contributions, it was the astute visual satire of John Leech and John Tenniel that increasingly predominated. Leech, the first humorous illustrator to have the term 'cartoon' applied to his work, was revered for his unsympathetic comic images of the lower sections of Victorian society. Amongst the cartoonists represented here, Tenniel, who replaced Leech as the

Trinity is the largest and richest of the colleges in Cambridge, and is now a home to around 600 undergraduates, 300 graduates, and over 160 Fellows. The college was founded by Henry VIII in 1546 and most of its major buildings date from the 16th and 17th centuries. Trinity was formed by combining Michaelhouse and King's Hall , two older colleges. Michaelhouse had existed since 1324; King's Hall had been established by Edward II in 1317 and refounded by Edward III in 1337. Much of the college was re-designed and re-built by Thomas Nevile, who became Master of Trinity in 1593. This work included the construction of Nevile's Court between Great Court and the river Cam. The Court was completed in the late 17th century when the Wren Library, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, was built. Its sister college is Christ Church, Oxford, which was founded by Henry VIII in the same year.

Victorian Art in Britain Frederick Walker A.R.A.
A Great Painter Who Died Young
Visitors to Victorian Art In Britain will know of my fascination for all facets of the art world of the second half of the nineteenth century. English art of the time suffered two losses of enormous consequence by the deaths of two young painters, the first being Joanna Boyce, and the second being Frederick Walker, who died of consumption at the age of thirty five. Walker had, perhaps, achieved more than the tragic Joanna Boyce who died in childbirth at an even younger age. I believe Walker’s loss was of the scale of that of the premature death of Bizet to French Music of the nineteenth century. His pictures combine subtlety, poetic feeling, and artistic ability of the highest degree. Frederick Walker was born in Marylebone, London on May 26, 1840. His father was a jewellery designer, and the family had artistic interests. He was educated at the North London Collegiate School. He was initially sent to work in the practice of an architect, but was not happy and soon left. His artistic ambitions were encouraged by his mother, to whom he was devoted. Walker then studied at Leigh’s Academy, followed in 1858, by the Royal Academy schools, where he was not regarded as a promising student, and passed the time largely unnoticed. His first job in art was as a wood engraver at T W Whymper, where he stayed for two years. Like so many other artists of the time our subject sought employment in magazine illustration. His first published illustration appeared on January 14, 1860 in

The exhibition, curated by the Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections , covers a wide range. The earliest manuscript is a text of a play called Hengist, King of Kent , by Thomas Middleton (1570-1627), a manuscript which is currently the subject of a new scholarly edition. This comes from the Portland Literary Collection, a resource usually associated with poetry and song of the late seventeenth century but providing also a number of plays and dramatic pieces, particularly titles written by or associated with William Cavendish, the 1st Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne. By contrast, from the last decades of the twentieth century, the display includes examples of local and London theatre programmes, in this case from the extensive theatre archive and library of Sir Hugh Willatt (1909-1996), former Secretary of the Arts Council. Programme evidence also has prominence on the board about Anton Chekhov, the Russian writer, who is one of the few individual playwrights featured in the display. This draws on the Patrick Miles Chekhov Collection, which records the performance of Chekhov works in Britain.
