A California Legacy book
Bayard Taylor was among the thousands of young men who spilled into California in the tumultuous year 1849. He arrived not with pick and shovel but with pen and paper, dispatched by Horace Greeley of the New York Tribune to report on the madness, exuberance, and upheaval of the California gold rush. Traveling throughout the state, Taylor witnessed the explosive growth of San Francisco and the instantaneous creation of Sierra townships. He traversed the nearly deserted lands of the Spanish missions and attended the constitutional convention that set the boundaries and forged the laws for the new state. With wit, intelligence, curiosity, and engaging humor, Taylor chronicled the birth of modern California. He had found "the richest material in the world to work upon," and his account—combining the skills of a gifted author with the freshness and immediacy of a reporter in the field—is widely regarded as a classic of western literature.

Subject Index (of this site)
As this site has grown in size and scope, locating information on specific subjects has become increasingly difficult. This index is being created in an effort to at least partially remedy this problem. As with the site itself, this index is an ongoing effort, for which this is merely an initial attempt. It is not, as yet, a comprehensive index, but a good beginning. The structure and other details of construction for this index are currently subject to change as we investigate how to make it most useful. ~~ A ~~

Poe's Literary Criticism
Since most of the literary criticism of Poe's era is unsigned, attribution is a complex and divisive issue. All items included here have been attributed to Poe at one time or another, but are subject to further analysis as our project proceeds. In general, uncertain attributions are noted by the presence of a question mark ("?"), with more question marks ("?") being used to denote less certain items. A few doubtful items are included merely because they have not been disproven. Again, these marks are not definitive at this stage. At the end of each selection, beyond the "End of Text" tag, is a code, such as "[S:1]". This code is intended as an internal marker for keeping track of verification of the text. In general, a value of "[S:0]" or the total absence of the code notes that the text has been entered, but not yet verified. Anyone who has ever tried to proofread a large volume of text will appreciate the inherent difficulties.

The Collections and Books:
During his lifetime, Poe planned, but never published a collection of his literary notices. A posthumous collection, edited by Rufus Wilmot Griswold, incorporates a few of his reviews, taken from the material Poe had accumulated for "Literary America." These collections are listed chronologically.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

[Classics] [Home] A SONG OF THE CAMP By
Bayard Taylor
"Give us a song " the soldiers cried, The outer trenches guarding, When the heated guns of the camp allied Grew weary of bombarding.
The dark Redan, in silent scoff, Lay grim and threatening under; And the tawny mound of the Malakoff No longer belched its thunder.
There was a pause. A guardsman said: "We storm the forts to-morrow; Sing while we may, another day Will bring enough of sorrow."
They lay along the battery's side, Below the smoking cannon; Brave hearts from Severn and from Clyde, And from the banks of Shannon.
They sang of love, and not of fame; Forgot was Britain's glory; Each heart recalled a different name, But all sang "Annie Laurie."
Voice after voice caught up the song, Until its tender passion Rose like an anthem, rich and strong, - Their battle-eve confession.
Dear girl, her name he dared not speak, But, as the song grew louder, Something upon the soldier's cheek Washed off the strains of powder.
Beyond the darkening ocean burned The bloody sunset's embers, While the Crimean valleys learned How English love remembers.

(1825 - 1878) U.S.A.
Writer, diplomat Born in Pennsylvania of a Quaker family, early showed a poetic gift and desire to escape from his too quiet surroundings. After the publication of his romantic verse, Ximena (1844), he went to England and the Continent, writing letters for the New-York Tribune and collecting material for Views A-foot The Tribune , delighted by his charming exoticism, made him manager of its literary section and sent him to California during the gold rush. After a year he returned to publish Eldorado (1850, 2 vols.), which augmented his popularity as an adventurous hero. The following year he departed for travels in Egypt, Abyssinia, Turkey, India, and China, and joined the Pacific squadroon of Commodore Perry. Upon his return to New York (1853), he published in quick succession three books, and was in steady demand as a lyceum lecturer. He wrote prose and poems. From 1863 to 1870 he wrote novels in which for the first time he considered the US. Taylor's last years were devoted to a translation of Goethe's Faust in original meters (1870-71, 2 vols.), which brought him a nonresident professorship of German at Cornell and the ministry to Germany. He died in Berlin, Germany.
