Author
Poet and travel writer Bayard Taylor produced popular chronicles of his journeys at home and abroad, as well as novels and collections of poetry. After he went to the Middle East, India, China, and Japan in 1851 1853, he published three volumes that mark his zenith as a travel writer, including The Lands of the Saracen; or, Pictures of Palestine, Asia Minor, Sicily, and Spain
This image of Taylor was painted in New York City by his friend, artist Thomas Hicks. In the painting Taylor wears clothing that he acquired in Egypt. He is seen with Achmet, his servant on his Middle East travels, whose portrait is based on a daguerreotype. To paint the background view of Damascus, the artist relied on drawings made by Taylor. Hicks, who was the nephew of Quaker painter Edward Hicks, exhibited the portrait at the National Academy of Design in 1856 as "A Morning in Damascus".

HANNAH THURSTON :
A STORY OF AMERICAN LIFE.
G. P. Putnam, New York : 1863 464 p. + Publisher's ads (2 p.). 12mo. 19 cm. Contemporary binding with a black morocco spine over marbled boards. All edges marbled. Bayard Taylor was one of the most celebrated writers of his time. His travel-writings are still widely read. He was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Apprenticed to a printer, he wrote a book of poems, and then visited Europe, and then gained a post as a traveling correspondent for the 'New York Tribune'.
This American tale was probably composed while he was Secretary to the Legation at St. Petersburg. "I do not rest the interest of the book on its slender plot, but on the fidelity with which it represents certain types of characters and phases of society. That in it which most resembles caricature is oftenest the transcript of actual fact... which may now and then be heard in almost any country community of the Northern and Western States." 'Hannah Thurston' Dedication to the Publisher

TYRE by: Bayard Taylor (1825-1878)
    HE wild and windy morning is lit with lurid fire;
    The thundering surf of ocean beats on the rocks of Tyre,
    Beats on the fallen columns and round the headland roars,
    And hurls its foamy volume along the hollow shores,
    And calls with hungry clamor, that speaks its long desire:
    "Where are the ships of Tarshish, the mighty ships of Tyre?"
    Within her cunning harbor, choked with invading sand,
    No galleys bring their freightage, the spoils of every land,
    And like a prostrate forest, when autumn gales have blown,
    Her colonnades of granite lie shattered and o'erthrown;
    And from the reef the pharos no longer flings its fire,
    To beacon home from Tarshish the lordly ships of Tyre.
    Where is thy rod of empire, once mighty on the waves,
    Thou that thyself exalted, till Kings became thy slaves?
    Thou that didst speak to nations, and saw thy will obeyed,
    Whose favor made them joyful, whose anger sore afraid,
    Who laid'st thy deep foundations, and thought them strong and sure,
    And boasted midst the waters, Shall I not aye endure?
