Kennett Square, Pa. His romantic verse in Ximena...and Other Poems (1844) secured him a long-standing assignment as correspondent for the New York Tribune. His trips to California, Mexico, Europe, Africa, and East Asia provided him with material for lectures, novels, and travel books. His contemporaries found these fascinating, but their popularity did not last. Perhaps the best of his poetry is in Poems of the Orient (1854) and in his verse drama Prince Deukalion (1878). His most ambitious work was his metrical translation into English (1870–71) of Goethe's Faust, which earned him appointment as U.S. minister to Germany in 1878. He died in Berlin. The Poet's House
Where should the Poet's house and household be?
Beneath what skies, in what untroubled air
Sings he for very joy of songs so fair
That in their steadfast laws he most is free?
In woods remote, where darkly tree on tree
Let fall their curtained shadows, to ensnare
His dreams, or hid in Fancy's happiest lair,
Some laughing island of the stormless sea?
Ah, never such to him their welcome gave!
But, flattered by the gods in finer scorn,
He drifts upon the world's unresting wave,
As drifts a sea-flower, by the tempest torn
From sheltered porches of the coral cave
Where it expands, of calm and silence born.
In Absence
Absence from thee is something worse than death;
For, to the heart that slumbers in the shroud,
What are the mourners' tears and clamours loud,
The open grave, the dismal cypress wreath?
The quiet body misses not its breath;
The pain that shivers through the weeping crowd
Is idle homage to the visage proud
That changeth not for all Affliction saith.

Nineteenth Century American Sonnets
For some commentary on the American sonnet through 1930, see a General Survey of the American Sonnet by Lewis Sterner. The first American sonnets were written by the Revolutionary War general David Humphreys in the last quarter of the 18th century and were not published until 1804. Some of the better known American sonneteers of mid-century were Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) (the Romantic link in the Sonnet Central chain), William Cullen Bryant Henry Wadsworth Longfellow John Greenleaf Whittier Jones Very ... Frederick Goddard Tuckerman (1821-1873), and Emma Lazarus (1849-1887). Also included here are many works by lesser known poets. Many of these more obscure works are taken from late 19th century anthologies, so any help with years of birth/death for the writers listed at the bottom of the page is appreciated. Here are some selections from the introduction to American Sonnets (1889), edited by William Sharp "It is, therefore, significant that in contemporary American verse, technically inferior to our own [British] as, in the main, it undoubtedly is, the motives The career of George Santayana (1863-1952), like that of Thomas Hardy, bridged the centuries; included here are his philosophical sonnets from the late 1800s.
