He completed his studies at the University of Bologna, from where he later received an invitation, in 1565, to join the brilliant court of the Este at Ferrara, where he remained for many years. There he wrote a number of beautiful, ltrical poems. He had already achieved fame prior to this when, aged just 18, he published his chivlaric poem Rinaldo in 1562.

He soon came into contact with the main institutions (court, church and academia) and was symbolic of the intellectual, lay courtier. As in life as in his works, Tasso experienced the full range of the crisis of Renaissance life from the fascination for property to the need to adhere to religious and counter-reformation values. Apart from his masterpiece, Gerusalemme liberata, he wrote a large number of Rime , a pastoral fable (Aminta), a tragedy (Re Torrismondo) , but his genre remained that of the epic. TORQUATO TASSO (1544-1595) Nasce a Sorrento nel 1544. Nobile napoletana la madre, che però perde all'età di 8 anni; il padre, che discendeva da una nobile famiglia bergamasca, era un apprezzato uomo di lettere al servizio, come segretario, del principe di Salerno, Ferrante Sanseverino. Quando i Tasso si trasferirono a Salerno, seguendo sempre i Sanseverino, una sollevazione popolare contro il tentativo del vicerè d'introdurre nella città l'Inquisizione, il Sanseverino si schierò dalla parte del popolo e, con lui, il padre di Torquato. Per ragioni di sicurezza il padre trasferì Torquato a Napoli, mandandolo a scuola dai gesuiti. Ma gli eventi precipitarono e i Sanseverino, coi loro fedeli, furono costretti ad abbandonare il regno, trasferendosi a Ferrara, poi a Bergamo, in Francia e a Roma. Nel 1556 Torquato raggiunge il padre a Urbino, presso la corte dei Dalla Rovere, dove viene educato secondo il modello del perfetto cortigiano stabilito dal Castiglione: culto delle lettere, della musica, delle arti, esercizio delle virtù cavalleresche. Nel 1560-61 frequenta l'Università di Padova, seguendo gli studi di legge, filosofia e lettere. Intraprende col padre una lunga serie di viaggi presso varie corti e centri culturali d'Italia: Urbino, Venezia, Bologna, Mantova. Pubblica il Rinaldo nel 1562 dedicandolo al cardinale Luigi d'Este. A Bologna è coinvolto in una vicenda goliardica, con strascichi giudiziari, per aver scritto versi satirici che alludevano ai bassi natali e all'effeminatezza di alcuni studenti e professori. È costretto a lasciare in fretta e furia la città.

He died in Rome, in the monastery of Saint Onofrio. This poem, like many of Tasso's love poems , was written for a young girl of noble extraction, Laura Peperara, whom Tasso met in Mantua in 1564. The play between the name of Laura and the word "l'aura" - "the breeze" is clear. His main concern was not with thoughts or ideas but with images and words, which he chose with great care and precision primarily for their capacity to captivate the attention with the magic of their sounds. In this respect Tasso is the precursor of "pure" poetry, and many a poet of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is considerably indebted to him.
