BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Booth Tarkington (1869-1946), native of Indianapolis, student of Princeton (Class of 1893), was perhaps Indiana's most famous author, both as playwright and as novelist. His best-known works wre written in the first decades of the twenthieth century: The Gentleman from Indiana Penrod Seventeen The Magnfican t Ambersons (1918), and Alice Adams (1921). The last two won Pulitzer Prizes. In his work he showed an appreciation of the real and imagined problems of young people. He was an early member of the Dramatic Club, founded in 1889, and often wrote plays and directed and acted in its productions. Tarkington was married twice. His first marriage, in 1902, to Laurel Louise Fletcher, ended in divorce in 1911, and his daughter by that marriage, Laurel, died young. In 1912 he married Susanah Kiefer Robinson of Dayton, who survived him by twenty years. In the absence of children of his own, he saw a good deal of Donald, John, and Booth Jameson, the sons of his sister Hautie (Mrs. Ovid Butler Jameson) , and of their children.

The lost world of Booth Tarkington by Thomas Mallon he beautiful name on the spine always seemed more suited to a pirate than to a writer, let alone one who came from the flat, cornstalked world of James Whitcomb Riley and Theodore Dreiser. But Booth Tarkington (1869-1946) was a Book-of-the-Month Club unto himself: five million copies sold in a pre-paperback era; three dozen volumes of fiction, a score of plays. After he won his second Pulitzer, in 1922, the Literary Digest pronounced him America's greatest living writer, by means of a poll that now seems as accurate as the magazine's prediction, fourteen years later, that Alf Landon would be President. From Atlantic Unbound "John O'Hara's Protectorate" (March 2000) His undisguised longing for acclaim still keeps John O'Hara from being the favorite son of the place he defined. Historical and Biographical Note
The publishing enterprises of Samuel Sidney McClure are an important facet of early twentieth-century American journalism. The McClure Syndicate, started by Samuel Sidney McClure in 1884, was the first successful company of its kind, and was largely responsible for introducing many American and British writers to a national public. His later venture, McClure's Magazine , contained the influential "muckraking" articles of Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, and Lincoln Steffens; it also had the distinction of promoting the then-unknown writer, Willa Cather. Although S.S. McClure's tenuous business competency would cause him to lose control over these ventures in the early part of the twentieth century, other members of his family, most notably his cousin, Henry Herbert McClure (d. 1938), were able to maintain a more steady career in the publishing world through the 1930s.

Introduction
This minibibliography, second in a series of three minibibliographies listing the best of American fiction, covers the period from 1900 to 1945. Theodore Dreiser, author of Sister Carrie, was the first voice to be heard as American literature entered the twentieth century. His reportorial vision and his message that outside forces direct human affairs were a continuation of the trend toward realism and naturalism first presented in the works of William Dean Howells, Henry James, Stephen Crane, and Frank Norris (see The Best of American Fiction: Early Period, minibibliography no. NSS 87-7 ). Dreiser also set the stage for other realistic and naturalistic American writers such as Erskine Caldwell, Jack London, and Sherwood Anderson. Other writers of the period from 1900 to 1945 focused their critical vision on particular regions or geographical locations. William Faulkner, Thomas Wolfe, and Ellen Glasgow captured the character and conflicts of the South while Willa Cather and O.E. Rolvaag chose the desolate American prairie as a setting to communicate timeless visions of humanity and its struggles. During the 1920s, two of the best known American literary figures, Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, reflected the shattered idealism and morality of the Jazz Age in
