A Timeline of Important Dates and Events
The Third Republic from its Origins to the Great War, 1871-1914 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press); a timeline prepared by Daniela Barberis, a graduate student at the University of Chicago working on Durkheim and French psychology; and my own notes and timelines, prepared initially for my own use and then later for online distribution. Like most electronic documents, this timeline should always be viewed as incomplete and subject to continuous additions, revisions, and emendations. It probably contains some errors, and it palpably contains enormous gaps. I expect to continuously correct the errors and fill in the gaps, while also linking these chronological references to other, more detailed information about the events described elsewhere in the Durkheim website. To this end, I sincerely hope that each of you reading these pages will provide me with additional material, comments, suggestions, and so on. This is an exercise in continuous, collective authorship by any and all interested in the life and work of Durkheim as well as the Durkheimians. Your contributions are more than welcome. The Age of Ideologies (3): The World of Auguste Comte
We can so far take a prophetic glance into futurity as to foretell that it will be the common and widely-spread species, belonging to the larger and dominant groups within each class, which will ultimately prevail and procreate new and dominant species. As all the living forms of life are the lineal descendants of those which lived long before the Cambrian epoch, we may feel certain that the ordinary succession by generation has never once been broken, and that no cataclysm has desolated the whole world. Hence we may look with some confidence to a secure future of great length. And as natural selection works solely by and for the good of each being, all corporeal and mental endowments will tend to progress toward perfection. Charles Darwin, The Origin of Species By 1880 Europe entered into a period which could well be described as the classical age of the 19th century. It was the mid-Victorian era the era of middle class domination. The middle classes of Europe settled back into their comfortable bourgeois chairs, fully imbued with the virtues of middle class existence. In England, industrialization and free trade had made the middle class. Political stability helped as well. Charles Dickens (1812-1870), ever the prolific voice and critic of this middle class, described one such middle class family, the Podsnaps, in his novel of 1864

    • Atala. Hybridity (Social sciences) Ethics in literature.
    Abstract:
Chateaubriand's Atala asks: what kind of human being is best prepared to represent an ethical attitude toward cultural difference? In raising this issue, Atala challenges the emerging Romantic view, popularized by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, that Western and native American cultures are ethical opposites. While beginning Atala with the familiar contrast between savage nature and European culture, by the end of the novel Chateaubriand transforms this polarity into a more complex model of hybrid cultural identity. The hybrid being, Chateaubriand illustrates, is formed by means of a double dialectical narrative process. The allegorical figures of Atala and Chactas incorporate and reject elements of two so-called opposite cultures the Spanish and the American Indian which they value equally. This essay argues the Chactas's and Atala's simultaneously critical and empathetic perspectives towards Spanish and American Indian societies enables them to negotiate cultural differences without lapsing into moral relativism. Cambiaire's The Influence of Edgar Allan Poe in France, Patrick F. Quinn's The French Face of Edgar Poe, and Jean Alexander's Affidavits of Genius: Edgar Allan Poe and the French Critics, 1847-1924 all fail to mention the correspondence concerning Poe and his work between Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867), the translator and champion of Poe's work in France, and Hippolyte Taine (1828-1893), the literary historian and critic (1). The only reference in English or American Poe studies to Taine's letter on Poe appears to be the reference by Joseph Wood Krutch in Edgar Allan Poe: A Study in Genius. He used Taine's description of Poe as the type of the Germanic-Englishman "with deep intuition and an amazingly overwrought nervous system" as evidence that Taine confessed a complete inability to understand Poe's work (2). But Krutch's assertion underestimates both Taine's admiration for Poe and his understanding of his creative genius, as the complete text of Taine's letter makes clear. Taine had little taste for Baudelaire's poetry, finding "sickness" in
