INTRODUCTION We present a selection of translations from Rabindranath Tagore's (1861-1941) Santiniketan (Shaantiniketana) Volumes I and II. Santiniketan Volumes I and II, are a compilation of Rabindranath's discourses at the residential school he founded in the early years of 20th century. The collection is named after the location of this school in rural Bengal; the name translates to 'abode of peace'. Students and teachers at Santiniketan joined Rabindranath at a prayer meeting every Wednesday. Discussion on spiritual themes were interspersed with songs; in conclusion Rabindranath addressed the gathering. The spirit of this weekly congress was inspired by similar observance in the Brahmo Samaj. Rabindranath's association with the Brahmo Samaj can be traced to strong familial links and his own early predilection. His grandfather Dwarakanath Tagore (1794-1846), a friend of Raja Rammohan Roy (1772-1833) was closely involved in the conception and founding of this liberal religious society. Rabindranath's father, Devendranath Tagore (1817-1905) lent able leadership to the fledgling Brahmo movement of mid 19th century. Rabindranath became the secretary of Adi Brahmo Samaj at the age of

    Rabindranath Tagore
Mohammad Omar Farooq A Bangali's world is touched from the childhood by many luminaries of Bengal (somewhat constrained by the border between the east and the west), but it would be surprising if the touch won't include that of Rabidranath. If Bangalis' (or Bangladeshis') early exposure to their heritage and culture often begins with " bhor holo dor kholo, khumumoni ottho re ", it would almost invariably also include " Jol pore pata nore." The first one is by the Rebel poet of Bengal and the national poet of Bangladesh, Kazi Nazrul Islam, and the second one is by none other than the world poet, Rabindranath Tagore. Bangladeshi or Bangali Muslims might drink "pani", instead of Jol. Yet, their cultural world naturally includes "Jol pore pata nore." The challenge of writing an article about such a well-known luminary is that he is so well-known, so much has already been written and spoken about him. What can one really write even to capture a glimpse of such a luminary’s life and works? Indeed, one of the biggest pitfalls most of us encounter as unavoidable is the entrenched notion that we already know, Rabindranath or Nazrul. However, it is only upon challenging ourselves with an open, humble and inquiring attitude and approach we learn that we do have one, two or a few things to learn, including in case of Rabindranath. At least, that’s my experience.

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) Rabindranath Tagore, recipient of the 1913 Noble prize for Literature, was born into a Brahmin family in Calcutta, India on May 7th 1861. His father was Maharshi Debendranath Tagore and his mother was Sarada Devi. His father was a leader of Brahmo Samaj, which was a new religious sect in nineteenth-century Bengal. This samaj attempted for the revival of Hinduism as laid down in the Upanishads. He was mainly educated at home and at the age of seventeen he was sent to England for formal schooling. In 1883 Tagore married Mrinalini Devi Raichauduri, with whom he had two sons and three daughters. He began to write poetry as a child and his first book appeared when he was seventeen years old. After a brief stay in England to study Law, he returned to India, where he rapidly became the most important and popular author of the colonial era. He composed several hundred popular songs and in 1929 he also began painting. He also started an experimental school at Shantiniketan where he tried his Upanishadic ideals of education. He participated in the Indian national movement from time to time in his own visionary way and Gandhi was his devoted friend. Tagore and Gandhi were great admirers of each other, despite their differences in matter of politics, nationalism, and social reform. It was Tagore who called Gandhi “The Mahatma in a peasant’s garb”, and Gandhi, in turn called Tagore, “The Great Sentinel”.

    Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941)
Tagore's literary life extended over sixty years, and he reminds one of Victor Hugo in the copiousness and variety of his work: over one thousand poems; nearly two dozen plays and playlets; eight novels; eight or more volumes of short stories; more than two thousands songs, of which he wrote both the words and the music; and a mass of prose on literary, social, religious, political, and other topics. Add to these his English translations; his paintings; his travels and lecture tours in Asia, America, and Europe; and his activities as educationist, as social and religious reformer, and as politician- and there you have, judged by quantity alone, the life-work of a Titan. This is not to say that his genius was no more than the capacity for taking infinite pains; but to note the element of steel and concrete that went to his making, and thus to dispose of the legend, that has grown in some quarters in recent years, of Tagore the pale-lily poet of ladies' table. Not that the legend is entirely baseless. Tagore's almost continuous iteration, in his English translations, of the softer side of his poetry and his wistful-mystical message, is partly responsible for it. After having won world-fame with the mystical-devotional poetry of the English Gitanjali, he dug over much along that particular seam, producing a monotonously one-sided impression of his work. It is true that The Gardener and the subsequent volumes of translations gave some of his best lyrics, but they also gave many poems which were very thin and had nothing beyond a delicate fancy or a pretty sensibility to show for their author.
