Interesting proto-feminist movie, adapted from Netta Syrett's novel Portrait of a Rebel. Hepburn is the Victorian miss saddled with a stern father (Crisp), despite which she manages to get herself pregnant in a headily romantic affair with Van Heflin. A visit to a married sister in Italy enables her to pass the child off as her niece; after which, determined to stand on her own feet, she rejects an offer of marriage from an understanding diplomat (Marshall) and goes to work. Twenty years later, through journalism, she has become a leading campaigner for women's rights. The gradual growth of her militancy, fuelled by her own experience, is effectively detailed; but Hollywood crassness has to get its word in by way of one of those fatuous coincidences (the threat of incest rears its head when her daughter falls for a young man who happens to be her half-brother), and the inevitable happy ending (Marshall, still patient, faithful, and infinitely understanding, gets Hepburn in the end). With all faults, it's nevertheless held together by Hepburn's superb performance.

he tents were pitched in the little plain surrounded by hills. Right and left there were stretches of tender, vivid green where the young corn was springing; farther still, on either hand, the plain was yellow with mustard-flower; but in the immediate foreground it was bare and stony. A few thorny bushes pushed their straggling way through the dry soil, ineffectively as far as the grace of the landscape was concerned, for they merely served to emphasise the barren aridness of the land that stretched before the tents, sloping gradually to the distant hills. The hills were uninteresting enough in themselves; they had no grandeur of outline, no picturesqueness even, though at morning and evening the sun, like a great magician, clothed them with beauty at a touch. They had begun to change, to soften, to blush rose red in the evening light, when a woman came to the entrance of the largest of the tents and looked toward them. She leaned against the support on one side of the canvas flap, and, putting back her head, rested that, too, against it, while her eyes wandered over the plain and over the distant hills. "Well, no, my dear, not very," he replied, drawling out the words with an exasperating air of delivering a final verdict, after deep reflection on the subject.

Click to enlarge AINSWORTH, William Harrison. Jack Sheppard a romance. Illustrated by George Cruikshank.
Three volumes, octavo, with 27 illustrations by George Cruikshank (one from volume 1 bound in volume 2), half-title missing from volume 3; a fine copy in later red morocco, spines gilt. London, Richard Bentley, First edition. The most celebrated of the prolific Ainsworth's "Newgate" novels, chronicling the career of the eponymous Sheppard (1702-24), a swashbuckling criminal who sensationally escaped from Newgate, only to be captured and hanged at Tyburn. The novel was well received, not least because of the vigorous plates by Cruikshank, better known for his work with Dickens. An elegant copy.
With the bookplate of Aldenham House, Hampshire.
