Sp Coll MS Paterson
21st August 2004 is the 150th anniversary of the birth of the ‘Glasgow Boy’ artist James Paterson (1854-1932). He was a proficient amateur photographer and this tribute to him is drawn from his collection of photograph albums and glass negatives. These were preserved by his family and are now in the James Paterson Museum Archive, donated to Glasgow University Library in 2003.
Atelier Laurens, Paris, 1883 (16 Art Students with teacher Laurent in bowler hat): MS Paterson DB, item 10 (print) Paterson was the son of manufacturer Andrew Paterson (1819-1907) – himself one of the earliest amateur photographers in Scotland – and Margaret Hunter (1817-1901). At the time James was born the family lived in Blantyre but soon moved to Glasgow. James studied at the Glasgow School of Art under Robert Greenlees and subsequently in Paris under Jacquesson de la Chevreuse and Jean-Paul Laurens. A couple of years after returning to Scotland he married, in 1884, Eliza Grier Ferguson, daughter of an engineer, William Ferguson, and Janet Cooper.

opererar i curraghs, små roddbåtar.
utpost i världen. Den främste är den världsberömde
dramatikern John Millington Synge

John Millington Synge
Figure de la renaissance littéraire irlandaise.
Russell,
L'Irlande du dedans et du dehors
Téry,
L'Ile des bardes

Cape Rep's a splendid mansion for Synge's Playboy

How reassuring to find our friend Barbara, another playgoer from the town of Barnstable, at intermission during the Cape Rep performance of John Millington Synge's The Playboy of the Western World . The Cape Rep Theater complex, in an old sailing camp, is way downcape on Route 6A in Brewster. Its fund-raising brochure is titled "Find Us," which we read as a challenge to night driving skills. We loved the play, and so did Barbara. As well we should. There won't be any better attraction in the current straw hat season than this one written way back in 1907. Be grateful. Synge's masterpiece of Irish life and folly will run at Cape Rep through May 31. The comfortable theater has seats available. This is a play about the prejudices spawned by humdrum lives, in this case on the Western edge by the wild sea. Synge was no boorish child of poverty himself. He was of the landed gentry, had a line of Protestant bishops to rebel against (as he also did the Catholics). In his early '20s of a short life (1871-1909), Synge told William Butler Yeats, arbiter of Irish culture, that he wanted to write about the poor Irish people, and Yeats sent him to the wild Aran Islands to learn. His unflattering portrait brought riots in and around the Abbey Theater when
