DANNY by: John Millington Synge (1871-1909)
NE night a score of Erris men,
A score I'm told and nine,
Said, "We'll get shut of Danny's noise
    Of girls and widows dyin'.
"There's not his like from Binghamstown
    To Boyle and Ballycroy,
At playing hell on decent girls,
    At beating man and boy.
"He's left two pairs of female twins
    Beyond in Killacreest,
    And twice in Crossmolina fair
    He's struck the parish priest.
"But we'll come round him in the night
A mile beyond the Mullet; Ten will quench his bloody eyes, And ten will choke his gullet."
It wasn't long till Danny came, From Bangor making way, And he was damning moon and stars And whistling grand and gay.
Till in a gap of hazel glen And not a hare in sight Out lepped the nine-and-twenty lads Along his left and right.

Beside a chapel I'd a room looked down,
Where all the women from the farm and town,
On Holy-days and Sundays used to pass
To marriages, and christenings, and to Mass.
Then I sat lonely watching score and score,
Till I turned jealous of the Lord next door…
Now by this window, where there's none can see, The Lord God's jealous of yourself and me. BOOKS on-line Library Catalog Gallery © 2000 Elena and Yacov Feldman document.write("<");document.write("! "); document.write(" ");document.write(">");

John Millington Synge(18711909). The Playboy of the Western World. Synge.- a leading figure in Irish Literary Renassance
http://www.eng.fju.edu.tw/English_Literature/uk_drama/Synge.htm
John Millington Synge(1871-1909) The Playboy of the Western World Synge - a leading figure in Irish Literary Renassance - reflects gullibility, superstition and brutality - blends Celtic romanticism with modern realism - two elements in his plays: Irish peasantry and Irish speech I Background
  • Audience claimed that the play was a degrading representation of Irish sensibilities (Bowen 71). Literary historians have explained the townsfolk¡¦s sympathy with the deed as being the empathy of an oppressed people with anyone who rebelled against authority. The audience of the play saw it as a representation of reality rather than a work of art.
  • II. Characteristics of the play
  • The play is not merely a story of young innocence and love but of the mentality and actions of an entire community. The play is said to be a play about audience response (Smith xx). By presenting the three father figures in the play, Synge presents a comic but degrading form of Irish institution that shapes the life of most Irishmen. Old Mahon is an individual with scant regard for the citizens (Bowen 72).

The Well of the Saints The Well of the Saints The Well of the Saints is a rich and complex tragic-comedic study of the conflict between imagination and reality. Two married blind beggars get a chance to finally see the world and each other when a wandering holy man gives them their sight. Playwright John Millington Synge (1871-1909) was a major figure of the Irish Literary Renaissance and together with WB Yeats and Lady Gregory, is strongly associated with the history of the Abbey Theatre. The Well of the Saints was staged at the Abbey Theatre in February 1905, the first of Synge's plays to be staged there. His most famous play, The Playboy of the Western World , opened two years later to a riotous reception by Dublin audiences. His other plays include
