ARTHUR SYMONS
Miss Fanny Davies is the Mrs Hemans of the pianoforte. Mrs Hemans [Felicia Dorothea Hemans, 1793-1835], it may be necessary to explain, was a famous poetess of the early part of last century. She was the most ladylike [ sic ] poet we have ever had, and her reputation was at one time so large in England and America that an American professor 'hardly feared to assert,' in print, that there was 'not a family of the midling class,' in his own country, 'in which some of the poems had not been read.' Women thought she represented their sex in a form of art which had been largely occupied by men. At last, they said, we have a feminine corrective to the too notorious male Byron; here are 'poems of the affections' as they ought to be written, tamed to the drawing-room; and there is no doubt that Mrs Hemans will be immortal. Only, things have turned out otherwise. Few now read even

PACHMANN AND THE PIANO
It seems to me that Pachmann is the only pianist who plays the piano as it ought to be played. I admit his limitations, I admit that he can play only certain things, but I contend that he is the greatest living pianist because he can play those things better than any other pianist can play anything [dividing piano-playing into 'art' and 'accomplishment,' Symons heard many of the see , March 3rd 2000 ]. Pachmann is the Verlaine of pianists, and when I hear him I think of Verlaine reading his own verse, in a faint, reluctant voice, which you overheard. Other players have mastered the piano, Pachmann absorbs its soul, and it is only when he touches it that it really speaks its own voice.

Updated 48 days 18 hours 44 minutes ago. Other descriptions of Symbolism (arts) La mort du fossoyeur ("The death of the gravedigger") by Carlos Schwabe is a visual compendium of Symbolist motifs. Death and angels , pristine snow , and the dramatic poses of the characters all express Symbolist longings for transfiguration "anywhere, out of the world." Symbolism was a late nineteenth century art movement of French and Belgian origin in poetry and other arts. From The Dance of Death (Totendanz) by Hans Holbein the Younger Death, personified is a personification of death as an anthropomorphic figure or a fictional character who has existed in mythology and popular culture since the earliest days of storytelling. ... Ellis's magnum opus was Studies in the Psychology of Sex (7 vols., 1897-1928). Until 1935 his work was legally available only to the medical profession. Ellis became known as a champion of women's rights and of sex education, but his autobiography My Life (1939) reveals his marital problems and unhappiness in his own sexual life. "All advance in social reform, even when it involves surgery, is, and always has been, effected by heroic pioneers who are ready to act, and even, if need be, to become martyrs. They slowly win the world to their side. The law limps behind." (from Questions of Our Day Henry Havelock Ellis was born in Croydon, Surrey, as the son of Edward Peppen Ellis, a sea captain, and Susannah Mary (Wheatley) Ellis. He was educated at private schools in London. At the age of sixteen he made a voyage to Australia in a ship under his father's command. He worked there as a teacher in New South Wales, where he underwent an inner transformation. Later Ellis returned to this experience in the novel Kanga Creek (1922) and his autobiography: "Yet there has never been a moment when the foundation and background of my life have not been marked by the impress they received at Sparke's Creek." After four years, he returned to England. Ellis entered St. Thomas' Hospital, London, where he studied medicine from 1881 to 1889. However, after qualifying he practiced only for a short time. In 1891, Ellis married the English writer Edith Lees; he was still a virgin. From the beginning, their marriage was unconventional - the wedding breakfast consisted of porridge and at the end of the honeymoon, Ellis went back to his barchelor rooms in Paddington. Edith lived at Fellowship house. Their stormy relationship was the central subject in Ellis's autobiography

Its influence is most notable in Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray , in which Huysmans's text is indirectly referenced and often echoed. Portraits can speak volumes
"To a Portrait" by Arthur Symons, 1865-1945:
    A pensive photograph
Ghost of old love, and half
    Ghost of myself!
    How the dear waiting eyes
    Sad home of memories,
Her waiting eyes! Ghost of old love, wronged ghost, Return: though all the pain Of all loved, long lost, Come back again. Forget not, but forgive! Alas, too late I cry. We are two ghosts that had our chance to live And lost it, she and I.
Imagine if the images in old photographs could come alive and speak to us. What would they tell us? Perhaps, like the portraits in Arthur Symons' poem, old pictures really do tell us something about their subjects. Maybe, if we look closely, we will see a bit of the character which rests within these lost lives. Before we begin to speculate as to what our ancestor's strange frown of 100 years ago may have meant, let's go back in time and pay a visit to a 19th-century photographer's studio. Our town has several portrait studios, and we've visited most of them in the past few weeks, looking for one with the right feel and the right price. Our portrait will last for many years to come, and we have spent much time selecting the size of the photograph and the type of cabinet card upon which it will be mounted.

    Biographical Sketch
William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) was born in Dublin, Ireland, the eldest of four children born to Susan Pollexfen and John Butler Yeats. While the family lived primarily in Dublin and London, time spent with relatives in County Sligo influenced Yeats' dreams and aspirations. In Sligo he learned the folk lore, myths, and legends which provided the structure and background for so much of his poetry. An uninspired student, Yeats spent five years at the Godolphin Day School while his father studied painting in London. Upon the family's return to Ireland in 1880 he attended Erasmus High School before being sent to the Metropolitan Art School. His artistic talent proved to be as indifferent as his scholarship, but he came away from the experience with a lifelong friend in his fellow student George William Russell. Russell may have provided impetus to what became Yeats' lifelong interest in mysticism and the occult. Yeats' first published poems appeared in The Dublin University Review in 1885. By 1889 Yeats was able to publish an entire volume of poems
