    London Nights Arthur Symons (1865-1945), the central Decadent writer of the 1890s, was a poet of urban life, who found stimulation and metaphor in the music-hall and the city street. He dealt with aspects of London other writers usually avoided - prostitution and casual sex in particular - pursuing fleeting impressions without making moral connexions, as Pater had recommended. For these facsimiles we have used the revised editions of 1896 and 1897, containing critical prefaces in which Symons justifies his poetic practice. The little bedroom papered red,
    And one beside me in the bed,
    Who chatters, chatters, half the night.
    I drowse and listen, drowse again,
    And still, although I would not hear,
    Her stream of chatter, like the rain,
    Is falling, falling on my ear.
    The bed-clothes stifle me, I ache
    With weariness, my eyelids prick;

    Kim Pearson WEB Du Bois and the Call of the Sorrow Songs Kim Pearson (Excerpt from: The Souls of Black Folk: Centennial Reflections published by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, (http://www.asalh.com/blackhistorytheme.htm). Just over a generation after his death, in Africa, on the eve of the 1963 March on Washington, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois has arguably emerged as African America’s archetypal intellectual. It was not merely the considerable volume of his contributions; it was his complex vision of who black people were and what they could become that has inspired, infuriated and intrigued down through the years. The uniqueness of Du Bois’ vision is in the connections he saw between consciousness and action, between intellectual and manual labor, between black and white, between Africa and America – and eventually, between sex, race, class exploitation and militarism. His was an eclectic, electric mind that drew upon the circumstances and lessons of his youth in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, the polemical tactics of classical rhetoricians and the best ideas of the major thinkers of his time to argue that people of African descent are one people, as significant to world history and progress as any other great people. It was Marcus Garvey who told the race that “You can accomplish what you will;” it was Carter Woodson who deconstructed the process by which the Negro had been systematically mis-educated, but it was Du Bois who identified the race’s “soulful” response to the tension of being both black

Death and angels , pristine snow , and the dramatic poses of the characters all express Symbolist longings for transfiguration "anywhere, out of the world." Symbolism was a late nineteenth century art movement of French and Belgian origin in poetry and other arts.
    Precursors and origins
    French Symbolism was in large part a reaction against Naturalism and Realism , movements which attempted to capture reality in its particularity. These movements invited a reaction in favour of spirituality , the imagination , and dreams ; the path to Symbolism begins with that reaction. Symbolist movement in literature has its roots in Les Fleurs du Mal The Flowers of Evil ) by Charles Baudelaire . The esthetic was developed by Stephane Mallarm© and Paul Verlaine during the 1860s and 70s. During the 1880s, the esthetic was articulated through a series of manifestoes and attracted a generation of writers.

    Reading Because of his devotion to his art it is probably true to say of Yeats that from his childhood on he chose to read only those who moved him to an emotional or poetical response. He sought the response in his literary and philosophical studies which were extensive - Theosophy and occult works; Plato and the Neoplantonists; St. Thomas Aquinas; the Kabbalah; Irish Myths and Legends; Dante, Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Donne, Castiglione, Vico, Swift, Berkeley, Burke, Blake, Shelly, Kant, Nietzche, Ferguson, Mangan, Standish O'Grady. John Butler Yeats, 1839-1922 Jack Butler Yeats, 1887-1957 Six years younger than the poet, he also spent his childhood in Sligo. Sligo, with its ships, fairs, races and circuses and the variety of men and women associated with them, was an inspiration for Jack's drawing from 1887 until he started his career as an art student in London. "In half of the pictures he paints today I recognise faces that I have met at Rosses or the Sligo quays', wrote the poet. The wild faces of horsemen, the quiet dignity of tinkers and wanderers, set against tumultuous skies which flash and dance with colour, are transformed in Jack's imagination; and that, after all, is what W.B. achieved in poetry often having that very subject matter.
