Algernon Charles Swinburne
He was a prolific writer of poetry, plays and novels. Notable works were Ave Atque Vale, a tribute to Baudelaire and Poems and Ballads: Second Series. Rescued from alcoholism and almost certainly an early grave by Theodore Watts-Dunton in 1879, Swinburne continued to write continuously and his output was truly impressive. He also took up literary criticism and wrote on Baudelaire, Blake, Hugo, Byron and many others. The criticism was vvariable in quality and ranged from incisive erudition to simply unjustified attacks. He remained with Watts-Dunton in Putney until his death in 1909. It would be a monumental task to put together a comprehensive collection of work and so I intend to concentrate on work that I especially enjoy.

In 1866 he published Poems and Ballads. The poems in this volume were savagely attacked for their sensuality and anti-Christian sentiments, but almost as excessively praised in other quarters for their technical facility and infusion of new energy into Victorian poetry. The poet's enthusiasm for the dreams for Italian unification of Giuseppe Mazzini (whom he met in 1867) found expression in A Song of Italy (1867) and Songs before Sunrise (1871). Swinburne had certain masochistic tendencies that, combined with his chronic epilepsy and his alcoholism, seriously undermined his health. By 1878 he was near death. He was restored to health under the supervision of Theodore

This snapshot was last updated: 08/05/2004.] Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837 - 1909) was a Victorian era English poet. His poetry was highly controversial in its day, much of it containing recurring themes of sadomasochism, death-wish, lesbianism and anti-Christian sentiments. He also wrote poems in favour of the unification of Italy. He was a student at Balliol College, Oxford, and his work in his day was very popular among undergraduates at Oxford and Cambridge, though today it has largely gone out of fashion. He was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement, and counted among his best friends Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

Biography of Algernon Charles Swinburne
Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837 - 1909)
Swinburne attended Eton and then Balliol College, Oxford, where he met William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and Gabriel Rossetti. He left Oxford without a degree and travelled on the Continent for a while, an allowance from his father enabling him to pursue his interests without the necessity of earning a living. His first book, The Queen Mother; Rosamund (1860) went unnoticed, but he scored a considerable success five years later with Atalanta in Calydon . Both Tennyson and Browning wrote to express their admiration for this play, which displays the rhythmic inventiveness and energy characteristic of Swinburne's best work. This triumph was eclipsed the following year by the first book of his Poems and Ballads series, which met with outrage and admiration in about equal proportions. The poems' emphasis on masochism and flagellation can be traced back to the poet's experiences at Eton, and the response from many Victorian reviewers was predictable. His rejection of Christianity also incensed his critics and delighted many of his young admirers, who included Thomas Hardy. Swinburne's lifestyle was as energetic and extravagant as his poetry, and his excesses led to a serious breakdown in 1879. He was placed in the care of his friend Theodore Watts-Duncan, who persuaded him to moderate his habits. Swinburne's health improved and he became a more respectable figure. He was still writing prolifically, but his late poetry shows evidence of a talent in decline.

The Compaint of Lisa by Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837 - 1909) There is no woman living who draws breath
So sad as I, though all things sadden her.
There is not one upon life's weariest way
Who is weary as I am weary of all but death.
Toward whom I look as looks the sunflower
All day with all his whole soul toward the sun;
While in the sun's sight I make moan all day,
And all night on my sleepless maiden bed.
Weep and call out on death, O Love, and thee,
That thou or he would take me to the dead.
And know not what thing evil I have done
That life should lay such heavy hand on me.
Alas! Love, what is this thou wouldst with me?
What honor shalt thou have to quench my breath,
Or what shall my heart broken profit thee?
O Love, O great god Love, what have I done

Myers Literary Guide Centre for Northern Studies ALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE (1837 - 1909) Swinburne, though born in London, was early removed from it and disliked it throughout his life. The son of an admiral, he was brought up on the Isle of Wight, but spent a good part of each summer at Capheaton Hall, the house of his grandfather, Sir John Swinburne (1762-1860) who had a famous library and was President of the Literary and Philosophical Society in Newcastle until 1837. Swinburne considered Northumberland to be his native county, ' the crowning county of England - yes the best!' He used to ride his pony over to Cambo, where the perpetual curate, John Wilkinson prepared him, somewhat desultorily, for Eton. He was too clever and would never study,' complained the curate. Despite Swinburne's later fame as a poet, it is in his novel Lesbia Brandon that we find the spell of the North at its strongest. The splendid landscape and seascape - what Swinburne called 'the joyful and fateful beauty of the seas off Bamburgh' are certainly Northumbrian, while Herbert's exhilarating contact with the sea mirrors the pain which for Swinburne was notoriously inseparable from pleasure. Swinburne's abiding love for the region (his favourite word for the North is 'bright') is also memorably reflected in poems like the intensely patriotic "Northumberland', 'Grace Darling', 'The Tyneside Widow', 'Winter in Northumberland' and 'A Jacobite's Exile', with its haunting echoes of the Till, the Wansbeck and the Tyne. Swinburne was fond of reciting as he rode across the moors (he was a daring horseman) 'through honeyed leagues of the northland border'. He never called it the Scottish border.

Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837 - 1909) was a Victorian era English poet and literary critic. His poetry was highly controversial in its day, although he is now considered to be one of the great poets of Britain. He touched on many themes, including liberty, the relationship between pleasure and pain, and the psychology of sexual passion (Sabazius, 1995). He also had interest in de Sade, masochism, and femmes fatales, along with a great disdain of Christianity . He wrote poems in favour of the independence of Italy, feuled by a hatred of tyranny. Overview
Swinburne studied at Balliol College, Oxford. He was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement, and he first gained literary fame with Atalanta in Calydon (1865), a drama in classical Greek form. He is considered a "decadent" poet, albeit that he professed to perhaps rather more vice than he actually indulged in, a fact which Oscar Wilde notably and acerbically commented upon. "Dolores" is a Swinburne poem notable for its decadent mood and matter.

Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837 - 1909)
We have seen thee, O Love, thou art fair; thou art goodly, O Love;
Thy wings make light in the air as the wings of a dove.
Thy feet are as winds that divide the stream of the sea;
Earth is thy covering to hide thee, the garment of thee.
Thou art swift and subtle and blind as a flame of fire;
Before thee the laughter, behind thee the tears of desire;
And twain go forth beside thee, a man with a maid;
Her eyes are the eyes of a bride whom delight makes afraid;
As the breath in the buds that stir is her bridal breath:
But Fate is the name of her; and his name is Death.
