The Victorian Sonnet
Much poetry of the Victorian period is no longer very highly esteemed, for reasons that seem apparent after reading a number of sonnetsa sentimental self-indulgence and what F. R. Leavis called an "inferiority, in rigour and force, of intellectual content." Yet, when looked at individually, the poems are often graceful and moving, and their worst, most conventional excesses seem no more ridiculous than the stock courtly love sequences of the 16th and 17th centuries. Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861), who wrote Sonnets from the Portuguese to her husband ( Robert Browning (1812-1889)), is probably the most genuinely popular (and critically maligned) sonneteer of this period. Other British Victorian writers included here are Thomas Hood Charles Tennyson Turner (1808-1879), and his more famous brother, Alfred, Lord Tennyson Matthew Arnold (1822-1888), best known for "Dover Beach," wrote several sonnets. George Meredith (1828-1909) wrote a lengthy sequence, Modern Love , about the ruin of his marriage. Although the sequence consisted of rhymed sixteen-line iambic pentameter poems, ever since the poet and critic Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) praised these poems as sonnets (and Meredith used the term himself in Sonnet 30 ), they have been widely accepted as specimens of the form. In addition to Meredith and Swinburne, the late 19th century

Synopsis
Love that holds life and death in fee,
Deep as the clear unsounded sea
And sweet as life or death can be,
Lays here my hope, my heart, and me
Before you, silent, in a song.
Since the old wild tale, made new, found grace,
When half sung through, before your face,
It needs must live a springtide space,
While April suns grow strong.

Swinburne, Algernon Charles (1837-1909) Algernon Charles Swinburne was interested in flagellation, sadomasochism, bisexuality, and lesbianism, not only for their erotics but also as gestures of social and cultural rebellion. He was born on April 5, 1837, to Charles and Jane Swinburne. The Swinburnes were an old and wealthy family, and Swinburne grew up in comfort on the Isle of Wight. A sickly child, he was educated for four years at Eton but was removed by his parents before he had completed his studies. Sponsor Message.
He continued his education under a series of private tutors and went up to Oxford in 1856. Though he was a talented scholar, he was sent down for a disciplinary infraction and never sat the examinations for his degree. Swinburne had a striking appearance; he was very short and thin, with a huge head and large quantities of flame-red hair. He had a nervous temperament, could behave erratically, and was subject to tremors. His early talent was apparent; he wrote plays in a Jacobean style in his early teens and grew up speaking both French and Italian. He also had a lively interest in flagellationa taste probably acquired at Eton, and he shared his sexual interests with, among others, Lord Houghton, who had amassed a large library of erotica.

(See map...ref. no 13) Swinburne died in Putney in London where he had lived for many years with Theodore Watts-Dunton in his villa at No 11 Putney Hill. Watts-Dunton cared for Swinburne and acted as a moderating influence on the poet who had been an alcoholic for many years. Swinburne, the son of Admiral and Lady Jane Swinburne, spent his childhood in Bonchurch but his burial there caused considerable controversy due to his atheism and dissolute lifestyle.

Name: Algernon Charles Swinburne Birth Date: April 5, 1837 Death Date: April 10, 1909 Place of Birth: London, England Place of Death: Putney, England Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: poet, dramatist, critic Algernon Charles Swinburne Main Biography The English poet, dramatist, and critic Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909) was famous in Victorian England for the innovative versification of his poetry and infamous for his violent attacks on Victorian morality. Algernon Charles Swinburne was born in London on April 5, 1837. He was nervous and frail from birth, but he was also fired with nervous energy and fearlessness to the point of being reckless. Much of his childhood was spent on the Isle of Wight, a circumstance that fostered his deep love of the sea. He also made frequent visits to his grandfather's estate in Northumberland, where he was fascinated by the medieval border ballads that the servants sang to him. Swinburne attended Eton from 1849 to 1853. At school he became an avid reader and won first prizes in French and Italian. The corporal punishment that was traditional at Eton may have developed the abnormal pleasure in the experience of pain that characterized his adult behavior.
