Susan Coolidge - Author

Neil Reed - Author Book: Paperback The endearing classic of Katy Carr and her family. Gangly, quick-tempered Katy always means to be beautiful and beloved and as good as an angel one day, but mean while, her resolutions somehow get forgotten, or go horribly wrong. Until, one terrible day, the swing breaks . . . But it is still a long, eventful time before Katy learns to be as loving and patient as her beautiful, invalid Cousin Helen. Of lonely lives shall read their type in thine:
Grapes which may never swell the tale of wine, Left out to meet the frost. EMBALMED. This is the street and the dwelling,
Let me count the houses o'er;
Yes,one, two, three from the corner,
And the house that I love makes four. That is the very window
Where I used to see her head
Bent over book or needle,
With ivy garlanded. And the very loop of the curtain,
And the very curve of the vine,
Were full of the grace and the meaning Which was hers by some right divine. I began to be glad at the corner, And all the way to the door My heart outran my footsteps, And frolicked and danced before, In haste for the words of welcome, The voice, the repose and grace, And the smile, like a benediction, Of that beautiful, vanished face. Now I pass the door, and I pause not

    Coolidge, Susan
    Woolsey, Sarah Chauncey (1835?-1905), pseudonym Susan Coolidge, American writer best remembered for her so-called Katy books for girls: What Katy Did (1872), What Katy Did at School (1873), and What Katy Did Next (1886). Many of her works have a domestic setting and advocate traditional home values, a characteristic of the genre of girls' books, which began with The Daisy Chain (1856), by English writer Charlotte Yonge, and was popularized by American writer Louisa May Alcott, author of the classic novel Little Women (1868), and American writer Elizabeth Wetherell.
    Woolsey was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to a large family on which the Carr family of her Katy books was modeled. She spent much of her childhood in New Haven, Connecticut, as her family was closely connected with Yale University there. Woolsey worked as a nurse during the American Civil War (1861-1865), after which she turned to writing. Her first book, A New Year's Bargain, appeared in 1871, and was edited by Louisa May Alcott. Woolsey's other works include two books about the sister of her Katy character, Clover: Clover (1888) and In the High Valley (1891). She also wrote poetry and edited the various correspondences of English novelists Fanny Burney and Jane Austen.

    WHEN persons decide on taking a journey, their first desire is to get certain questions answered. They wish to know exactly how, when, and where to go, what to carry in their trunks, and how much money the expedition is likely to cost. These questions are not, so far as I know, answered by any of the existing sources of information with regard to the California trip. At least, so we found when, last spring, we rather suddenly resolved upon a western journey. Being quite ignorant of what lay before us, we went eagerly to work to collect facts. We read

    [First chapter. pp. 3-16.] FROM CHICAGO TO OGDEN.
    "THREE nights and four days in the cars!" These words haunted us and hindered our rest. What should we eat and drink, and wherewithal should we be clothed? No Scripture was strong enough to calm our anxious thoughts; no friend's experience of comfort and ease on the journey sounded credible enough to disarm our fears. "Dust is dust," said we, "and railroad is railroad. All restaurant cooking in America is intolerable. We shall be wretched; nevertheless, we go." There is a handsome black boy at the Sherman House, Chicago, who remembers, perhaps, how many parcels of "life preservers" of one kind and another were lifted into our drawing-room on the Pullman cars. But nobody else will ever know.
