Sources on Sun Tzu's life
The only surviving source on the life of Sun Tzu is the biography written in the 2nd century BC by the historian Sima Qian , who describes him as a general who lived in the state of Wu in the 6th century BC . However, the biography is not consistent with other sources for the period, and both the form and content indicate that it was most likely written between 400 BC and 320 BC Sun Tsu's own work, The Art of War appears to provide a number of direct clues to his life, for example, war chariots described by Sun Tzu were used for a relatively brief period ending in the 4th century BC and so dates at least part of the work to that time. Some scholars have concluded that Sun Tzu's work was actually authored by unknown Chinese philosophers and that Sun Tzu did not actually exist as a historical figure. This can be seen further in the way that the historicity of Sun Tsu is discussed extensively in the introduction to Giles' 1910 translation available as a

T he original text of "Ping Fa: The Art of War" does not exist. Legend has it that the original was written circa 500 BC by General Sun Wu, in the employ of Ho Lu, King of Wu, and consisted of 82 chapters, of which the existing 13 chapters make up the first 'chuan'. Sun Wu was given the title 'Tzu', which means 'master', late in his life.
S cholars estimate that existing texts are copies which date from 450 BC to 320 BC, during the 'Warring States' period of Chinese history. The text was unknown to Europeans until around 1750 AD. T he book is a sophisticated treatise on philosophy, logistics, espionage, strategy and tactics, with later versions often containing more commentary than original text. The central premise is that battles are won not strictly from force or might, but rather by the use of wisdom and courage, as well as cunning and guile. T he 1910 translation by Leslie Giles is greatly respected, while later translations by Thomas Cleary and others take into account Wu Chiu-lung's transcription, which was made from bamboo strips dated 140-118 BC that were found in 1972.

"The art of war is of vital importance..."
Sun Tzu
, Chinese general, circa 500 B.C. February 8, 2003
Sun Tzu was a Chinese general who lived around 500 B.C. He wrote a collection of essays on the art of war. His are the earliest known writings on this subject. Sun Tzu's most fundamental principles regarding war are that " All warfare is based on deception ", and that " The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting. " "To win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the highest skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the highest skill."
- Sun Tzu
"The easiest way to fight against terrorism is to kill as many terrorists as possible. If not actual terrorists, then we should at least kill radical Islamists. If not radical Islamists, then we should at least kill Muslims."

Sun Tzu said:
Sorry, you do not have Java Browser to see this message... Raising a host of a hundred thousand men and engaging them in war entails heavy loss on the people and a drain on the resources. The daily expenditure will amount to a thousand ounces of silver. There will be commotion at home and abroad, and men will drop out exhausted.
Opposing forces may face each other for years, striving for the victory which may be decided in a single day. This being so, to remain in ignorance of the enemy's condition simply because one grudges the outlay of a hundred ounces of silver is the height of stupidity.
One who acts thus is no leader of men, no present help to his cause, no master of victory. Thus, what enables the wise commander to strike and conquer, and achieve things beyond the reach of ordinary men, is foreknowledge. Now this foreknowledge cannot be elicited from spirits; it cannot be obtained inductively from experience, nor by any deductive calculation. Knowledge of the enemy's dispositions can only be obtained from other men.
Hence the use of spies, of whom there are five classes:

un Tzu has exercised a potent fascination over the minds of some of China's greatest men. Among the famous generals who are known to have studied his pages with enthusiasm may be mentioned Han Hsin (d. 196 B.C.), Feng I (d. 34 A.D.), Lu Meng (d. 219), and Yo Fei (1103-1141). The opinion of Ts`ao Kung, who disputes with Han Hsin the highest place in Chinese military annals, has already been recorded. Still more remarkable, in one way, is the testimony of purely literary men, such as Su Hsun (the father of Su Tung-p`o), who wrote several essays on military topics, all of which owe their chief inspiration to Sun Tzu. The following short passage by him is preserved in the YU HAI: Sun Wu's saying, that in war one cannot make certain of conquering, is very different indeed from what other books tell us. Wu Ch`i was a man of the same stamp as Sun Wu: they both wrote books on war, and they are linked together in popular speech as "Sun and Wu." But Wu Ch`i's remarks on war are less weighty, his rules are rougher and more crudely stated, and there is not the same unity of plan as in Sun Tzu's work, where the style is terse, but the meaning fully brought out. The following is an extract from the "Impartial Judgments in the Garden of Literature" by Cheng Hou: Sun Tzu's 13 chapters are not only the staple and base of all military men's training, but also compel the most careful attention of scholars and men of letters. His sayings are terse yet elegant, simple yet profound, perspicuous and eminently practical. Such works as the LUN YU, the I CHING and the great Commentary
