The earliest known work on military strategy and war, The Art of War consists of 13 short chapters attributed to a man named Sun Tzu, also known as Sun Tzi or Sun Wu. Little is known about the man, but it is widely believed he was an accomplished general when he wrote the text, which emphasizes surprise and deception ("When capable, feign incapacity; when active, inactivity."). The work became known in Europe in the 18th century, and something of a manual for U.S. military strategists in the 20th century, popularized by Henry Kissinger , among others. FOUR GOOD LINKS

All warfare is based on deception.
    Sun Tzu
For to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill. Sun Tzu Hence to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting. Sun Tzu If our soldiers are not overburdened with money, it is not because they have a distaste for riches; if their lives are not unduly long, it is not because they are disinclined to longevity. Sun Tzu If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles. Sun Tzu It is essential to seek out enemy agents who have come to conduct espionage against you and to bribe them to serve you. Give them instructions and care for them. Thus doubled agents are recruited and used. Sun Tzu Now the reason the enlightened prince and the wise general conquer the enemy whenever they move and their achievements surpass those of ordinary men is foreknowledge.

    Sun Tzu's Art of War
Sun Tzu's Art of War was written 2500 year ago by Sun Wu, a militarist and strategist. It summarizes practical war experience at and before the end of the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 B.C.) in the form of military theory treatise, laying a theoretical basis and good tradition for Chinese classical military sciences. It occupies a significant position in the history of Chinese and foreign military and strategy. This work has only 13 chapters with over 5000 Chinese characters, but it is an immortal masterpiece famous in the world. It is not only a model work covering Chinese thinking of military management, but also a magnificent book dealing with Chinese management philosophy. Over hundreds and thousands of years, Sun Tzu's Art of War has been widely recommended and has produced world-wide impact. The mystery is that it suggests a series of ideas of "clever combat" compatible with objective law. The so-called "clever combat" refers to wining the greatest victory in the best way. In the modern economic society, it implies the victory of defeating competitors and occupying market by means of the most effective measures.

Sixth or fifth century b.c. Chinese General Sun Tzu is the reputed author of The Art of War Ping-fa ), which some consider to be the best single book ever written on the subject. Of Sun Wu himself (Tzu is an honorific particle, meaning "master"), little is known beyond his birth in the state of Ch'i and service to King Ho-lu of Wu; he was a military specialist active during the turbulent late Chou dynasty. Recent excavations of ancient manuscripts of Sun Tzu in China have confirmed the great antiquity of the text attributed to him. Long studied in Asia, Sun Tzu's work became known in the West only in the late eighteenth century and was not properly translated until the twentieth. Sun Tzu's approach to warfare, unlike that of Western authors, does not put force at the center: indeed, the Chinese character li (force) occurs only nine times in the text's thirteen chapters. This reflects the conditions of warfare in China at the time (force was then in fact of limited utility) as well as Sun Tzu's conviction that victory and defeat are fundamentally psychological states. He sees war, therefore, not so much as a matter of destroying the enemy materially and physically (although that may play a role), but of unsettling the enemy psychologically; his goal is to force the enemy's leadership and society from a condition of harmony, in which they can resist effectively, toward one of chaos ( luan

    What Sun Tzu Would Say
Computer security practitioners love to quote Sun Tzu. I have no idea why, other than that he wrote many profound statements of the obvious, and security is really pretty much obvious stuff. My favorite quote from Sun Tzu regarding computer security is from his lost scrolls, which were written and subsequently pawned for services at a local massage parlor in 1750BC. They have never resurfaced, so the translation I am using is of questionable provenance. It appears to be the result of a machine-translation from an early website. The Tale of Wise Master Tzu and the Prince's Patching Policy
It happened that The Prince of Wu was reading a bunch of Master Tzu's USENET postings and concluded that Master Tzu was wise in the way of strategy. Sending his bannermen forth, he offered Master Tzu a golden Ipod in return for a brief consulting visit in which The Master was to assess Prince Wu's Patching Policy. Prince Wu had been to numerous security conferences, and subscribed to the daily scrolls from Master SANS, and spent 3 hours per day meditating to achieve Security Focus - he was sure that Master Tzu would be impressed with his efforts and would position him well in the Magic Quadrant of visionaries. The day came when Master Tzu came to inspect Prince Wu's fortifications and Patching Policy. Alighting from his palanquin, which was carried by mighty slaves, Master Tzu sniffed the air and quickly observed to the attentive Prince Wu:
If you are fighting a losing battle, it is likely one of three things:

The place of battle must not be made known to the enemy. If it is not known, then the enemy must prepare to defend many places. Sun Tzu: The Principles of Warfare, Chapter Six: Weakness and Strength The terrorists who declared war on America live by this ancient principle. That leaves America and her allies in an almost untenable situation in the War on Terror, because the nature of terrorism and the nature of an open society place America and her allies on the side of having to defend an innumerable number of places from an innumerable type of attacks. Terrorist organizations covertly plan to destroy targets of their own choosing by operating in cells isolated from each other, and they demand absolute secrecy from their members. They must do this if they are to achieve their goal of terrorizing civilian populations with impunity.
