Tactics of Ancient China: A Sun Tzu Companion
By Brad Haugaard
Note: I wrote this brief book some time ago, but it has never before been published. - Brad Haugaard Preface
This book is primarily for the Western reader who has an interest in military tactics and strategems and who would like to know more about those to be found in ancient Chinese literature. It is also a book for those who have read Sun Tzu's Art of War . In fact, his book might be considered a prerequisite for this work since many of the battles described here were clearly influenced by Sun Tzu's teachings. The incidents in this book are drawn primarily from two great semi-fictional classics and one early work of history. The semi-fictional works are San Kuo Chi Yen-i (translated by C.H. Brewitt-Taylor as, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms ), and Shui Hu Chuan , (translated by Pearl Buck as, All Men Are Brothers The historical work is Shi Chi (translated by Burton Watson as, Records of the Grand Historian ). It was completed by Ssu-ma Ch'ien, the grand historian of Emperor Wu, sometime around 89 B.C, contemporaneous with Julius Caesar and the decline of the Roman republic in the West. The original work is massive and eclectic, containing 130 chapters dealing with various aspects of Chinese government, biographies, dynasties, etc. Watson's very readable English translation has been substantially abbreviated.

Kishlansky, ed., Sources of World History Volume I , (New York: HarperCollins CollegePublishers, 1995), pp. 84-88 A much fuller version, with very useful introductions and discussions, along with commentaries from other ancient Chinese writers, is available in Sun Tzu, The Art of War , trans Samuel B, Griffin, (Oxford: Clarendon, 1963; later pb editions available), pb. another translation, by Lionel Giles, is available on the Internet, via the World Wide Web, at http://timpwrmac.clh.icnet.uk/Docs/suntzu/szcontents.html. Click on another version of the Art of War to go there now. [Kishlansky introduction] Although almost nothing is known of the life of Sun-tzu, his tract, The Art of War , has been one of the most influential military handbooks in world history. Legend has it that he served the Wu dynasty after being challenged by the emperor to make an effective army out of his concubines. Sun-tzu placed the emperor's two favorites at the head of two different files of concubines and when they failed to discipline their charges he cut their heads off despite the protests of the emperor. After that the concubines drilled effectively. He became known as Sun the warrior and is reputed never top have lost a battle. The Art of War is noted for its realistic assessment of the political constraints of warfare. It is part drill book, part tactical survey, and part political treatise. Its advice has been followed for centuries and it continues to be consulted by modern Chinese leaders. In recent years it has been promoted as a tool in business schools in Japan and the United States.

    Online Version: Project Gutenberg (1994) ; Sun-Tzu Refence Archive (marxists.org) 2000 This book, along with the Tao Te Ching , represents one of the first works to use the dialectical process , creating one of the most lucid books ever written on the principles of warfare. The most basic and powerful dialectical formulation Sun-Tzu makes is in his statement "All warfare is based on deception.", thus, all peace is based on honesty and openess. The last word in the title, translated as "art", literally means "as water goes"; likely a reference to the methods explained in the Tao Te Ching. This translation, printed in 1910 under the title: Sun Tzu on the Art of War. The Oldest Military Treatise in the World , was the first full English translation of the Chinese text . In the original publication, notes by the translator accompanied the text. In this publication the notes have been removed, and the text in full is published. 1. Laying Plans

    When the tone is accusatory, critical, personal, sarcastic or bitter, you know you are engulfed in an adversarial struggle,whether you want it or not. More than likely, in addition to a disagreement on issues, you have somehow, perhaps inadvertently, stepped into a land mine of ego, hyper-sensitivity, previously unearthed blunders or organizational power struggle, in which you are marked for organizational demise. Don't roll over. Fight back. Sun Tzu, of course, was the military genius who formulated timeless strategies for defeating one's enemies. Although those adversaries, who arise from time to time to confront you in the workplace, may not rise to the level of enemies, nonetheless they thwart your progress, can derail your programs, and are capable of slowing or even incinerating your career. Just like the adversaries of old, they must be defeated, vanquished, or "put in a box", a kind of "no fly zone", where they can do no further damage to your career. How Do You Know When Someone Becomes Your Adversary?

    Sun Tzu's Art of War Speak to me Master Sun,
    of the art of war. Listen then my son,
    and know you well,
    I that in war,
    the Way is to avoid what is strong,
    and to strike what is weak. II Know also,
    that all warfare is based on deception. Hence,
    When able to attack, we must seem unable;
    When using our forces, we must seem inactive;
    When we are near,
    the enemy must believe we are far away; When far away, we must make him believe we are near. Hold out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, disunity, and crush him. If he is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, avoid and evade him. If your opponent is of choleric temper, irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant. If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them. Attack where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.

    The Art of War
    Sun Tzu / Translated by Lionel Giles Chapter 1: Laying Plans Sun Tzu said: The art of war is of vital importance to the State. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected. The art of war, then, is governed by five constant factors, to be taken into account in one's deliberations, when seeking to determine the conditions obtaining in the field. These are: (1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth; (4) The Commander; (5) Method and discipline. The Moral Law causes the people to be in complete accord with their ruler, so that they will follow him regardless of their lives, undismayed by any danger. Heaven signifies night and day, cold and heat, times and seasons. Earth comprises distances, great and small; danger and security; open ground and narrow passes; the chances of life and death. The Commander stands for the virtues of wisdom, sincerity, benevolence, courage and strictness. By method and discipline are to be understood the marshaling of the army in its proper subdivisions, the graduations of rank among the officers, the maintenance of roads by which supplies may reach the army, and the control of military expenditure.

    I have a copy of Sun Tzu's The Art of War (1963) that has a forward by B.H. Liddell Hart. I have taken a few paragraphs from this and the closing line and present them here: Sun Tzu's essays on `The Art of War' form the earliest of known treatises on the subject, but have never been surpassed in comprehensiveness and depth of understanding. They might well be termed the concentrated essence of wisdom on the conduct of war. Among all the military thinkers of the past, only Clausewitz is comparable, and even he is more `dated' than Sun Tzu, and in part antiquated, although he was writing more than two thousand years later. Sun Tzu has clearer vision, more profound insight, and eternal freshness. The ill-effects of Clausewitz's teaching arose largely from his disciples' too shallow and too extreme interpretation of it overlooking his qualifying clauses, but he lent himself to such misinterpretation by expounding his theory in a way too abstract and involved for concrete minded soldiers to follow the course of his arguement, which often turned back from the direction which it seemed to be taking. Impressed but bemused, they clutched at his vivid leading phrases and missed the underlying trend of his thought - which dod not differ so much from Sun tzu's conclusions as it appeared to do on the surface.
