Though young, I feel that the "Art of War", and any books with relevance to it and Sun Tzu, is a great guide to further inhance oneself morally and mentally. It's a great book with vast potential, if read correctly. I'm only 14 so at first it was difficult to relate the subjects with modern life, but when you finally do find a comparison it couldn't be more indepth.
I've recently, spontaneously, been involved with many books of this sort. They intrigued me to the fullest extent. If anyone has suggestions to books similar to this, then please contact me at SwordSlinger777@hotmail.com. Or if you'd just like to comment privately.

    44. About The Art Of War
Sun Tzu's Art of War compared with Japan's Art of War , the Book of Five Rings
    http://artofwar.thetao.info
    About the Art of War
Around 2,000 years ago, China was in turmoil. A series of wars left a third of the population dead and the leaders in search of a new way of governing. Confucius and Lao Tzu had developed their solutions but Sun Tzu's philosophy, born of his direct experience of war also gained a popular following amongst the ruling class. In the Art of War , Sun Tzu recommended a strategic method to win that rarely required actual war. Spies, diplomats, deception, and a correctly organised internal structure were his main tools. If it came to war though, he had detailed insight into its methods and strategies. Around 1600AD in Japan, a samurai named Miyamoto Musashi emerged that was literally unbeatable. One time, using his two sword technique, he single-handedly beat over 30 samurai simultaneously attacking him with guns, arrows and swords. The rulers asked him to explain is strategies in writing. Alone in a cave he wrote The Book of Five Rings , a classic that is still used by modern executives and martial artists. This web site explains the ideas of the Art of War and The Book of Five Rings

    Who is Sun Tzu?
Chinese general, circa 500 B.C. A collection of essays on the art of war is attributed to Sun Tzu. These are the earliest known treatises on the subject. There is a growing number of translations of this Chinese classic, usually titled Sun Tzu: The Art of War . Sometimes the wording is reversed. Knowledge of Sun Tzu reached Europe shortly before the French Revolution in the form of a summary translation by Father J. J. M. Amiot, a French Jesuit priest. In the various translations, Sun Tzu is sometimes referred to as Sun Wu, and Sun Tzi. See Sun Tzu Book List The most fundamental of Sun Tzu's principles for the conduct of war is that "All warfare is based on deception" Another key Sun Tzu principle is that "The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting." Sun Tzu's ideas spread to the rest of Asia and to Japan. The Japanese quickly adopted Sun Tzu's teaching and perhaps added a few chapters of their own. It is no accident that Asian cultures are referred to as cultures of strategy, and Sun Tzu has played no small part in this development. The works of Sun Tzu have been widely known in the United States since the mid-1970s. Diplomat Henry Kissinger has made reference to Sun Tzu and the principles for the conduct of warfare has been the subject of serious study in U.S. military circles for many years. The art of war as applied to business, sports, diplomacy and personal lives has been popularized in American business and management texts. Sun Tzu may be the most frequently quoted Chinese personality in the world today, eclipsing Confucius, Lao Tze and Mao Dzedong.

Sun Tzu and The Art of War
    by Tim Hoyt
"War is a vital matter of state. It is the field on which life or death is determined and the road that leads to either survival or ruin, and must be examined with the greatest care." (Chapter 1). The Art of War represents the earliest existing codification of military and political strategy, and is probably the most widely-read work on strategy in history. (It helps, of course, that the book comes from China, which is undoubtedly the most widely-populated country in history, and which has a long literary tradition.) Sun Tzu's book is widely studied by the business and military communities today. At least seven different translations appeared in the last two decades alone, including an "official" copy of the version used by the People's Liberation Army complete with Marxist dialectic and critique (I know this because I have them on my desk. Isn't it great, being weird and obsessive?) "...the best military policy is to attack strategies; the next to attack alliances; the next to attack soldiers..."(Chapter 3) There's a reason that Diplomacy recommends an extra-long period of diplomacy before the first turn. This is the period when most, if not all, players formulate their basic strategies for the game. These strategies may or may not be formulated in cooperation with allies, but in any event they require outside assistance to have any chance of succeeding. Attacking enemy strategies still requires a strategy of your own: who is likely to be your enemy? Who do you want as an ally? How can you get them on your side? A simple method is to attack a fellow-neighbor's strategy. You don't even have to tell the truth, as long as you're persuasive. "Doug? Doug Kent? He ALWAYS attacks France when he plays Britain. He's been after me as an ally from the word go, but I just don't trust him. Germany and France are natural allies..." Denying an opponent allies at the beginning of the game is the best way of putting him in a position where you can destroy him.

    Heeding Sun or Mao?
    Assessing China's Military Thinking
Global Beat Issue Brief No. 30
    March 13, 1998
    By Richard Halloran
Ancient China's famed strategist, Sun Tzu cautioned leaders of his day to take pains to avoid miscalculating the capabilities or intentions of potential adversaries lest disaster strike: "If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle." In contrast, modern China's revolutionary leader, Mao Zedong, brushed aside that warning: "All reactionaries are paper tigers. In appearance, the reactionaries are terrifying, but in reality they are not so powerful." Today, American defense officials are debating whether their Chinese counterparts will, in effect, heed Sun or Mao. Underlying the deliberations is a fear that the Chinese might miscalculate in thinking they could prevail over the armed forces of the United States in a regional conflict in Asia. Leading one school is Admiral Joseph W. Prueher, who commands U.S. forces in the Pacific; he says Chinese military leaders are "smart, pragmatic" officers who understand that the Peoples Liberation Army does not compare with U.S. forces "in any way." Influential Pentagon analysts, however, assert that Chinese leaders hold "dangerous misperceptions that may well cause serious political friction or even military conflict with the United States." For now, the argument appears tilted toward Admiral Prueher's point of view. The Chinese have not beaten the war drums for more than a year. Little at the recent National People's Congress suggested that China's leaders were eager to confront the U.S. even though sizable American naval forces have been shifted from the Pacific to the Arabian Sea in the dispute with Iraq.

Previous Article Contents Article by Dean McNicol Sun Tzu's The Art of War Abstract Sun Tzu's the art of war is considered to be the best text on strategy. This is how it is viewed by western society but it is also a philosophical and spiritual text. To fully comprehend this text we must understand the symbolism, philosophies and the Chinese society of that time. Many people read The Art of War without taking these factors into consideration missing the ethical, social, political lessons this text can bring to western business. Studying the history that led up to the Text can give us a greater appreciation of Chinese thought while aiding our own culture. Introduction When deciding the topic for this paper I thought that Sun Tzu's The Art of War would be an easy and short topic to present. In delving into the background and symbolism of the text I found that I had to some how not only describe a text but the culture if I was to put the text into context. No paper can fully or fairly represent any culture. This paper is meant to be a roller coaster ride through some of many areas relating to Sun Tzu's The Art of War.

At least six English translations can be found in most large bookstores on bookshelves next to another much cited but little read military favorite, Carl von Clausewitz's On War (Knopf, New York, 1993).(1) Translator Roger Ames describes The Art of War as "the world's foremost classic on military strategy."(2) During the Vietnam war, it was popular for Army officers to be seen carrying copies of the works of Sun Tzu and Man Tse-tung. It is unlikely that many who carried the books read them, and few who read them understood them.

    The Art Of War
    Chapter 1 : Estimates
War is a matter of vital importance to the state; a matter of life or death, the road either to survival or to ruin. Hence, it is imperative that it be studied thoroughly.
These five fundamental factors are familiar to every general. Those who master them win; those who do not are defeated. Therefore, in laying plans, compare the following seven elements, appraising them with the utmost care.
Which ruler is wise and more able?
    Which commander is more talented?
Which army obtains the advantages of nature and the terrain? In which army are regulations and instructions better carried out? Which troops are stronger?
