The Art of War By Sun Tzu Translated by Lionel Giles I. Laying Plans Sun Tzu said: The art of war is of vital importance to the State. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected. The art of war, then, is governed by five constant factors, to be taken into account in one's deliberations, when seeking to determine the conditions obtaining in the field. These are: (1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth; (4) The Commander; (5) Method and discipline. The Moral Law causes the people to be in complete accord with their ruler, so that they will follow him regardless of their lives, undismayed by any danger.

26. L'Art De La Guerre Selon Sun Tzu - Accueil, Presentation Et Sommaire
Traduction de 1772 par le p¨re Amiot.
http://www.ifrance.com/artdelaguerreselonsuntzu/
L' ART DE LA GUERRE Bienvenue!

James Clavell's Translation of The Art of War
Clavell's Version: Although James Clavell did not do this translation himself (it is a version of an older translation by Giles), his name appears prominently on its cover, so we refer to it by his name. This is the book for readers who want a little more explanation about what the nineteenth-century author thought Sun Tzu meant, mixed in with the text itself. The actual text and its sentences and paragraphs have little to do with the original text.

(Redirected from Sun-tzu Sun Tzu (孫子 also commonly written in pinyin Sūn Zǐ ) was the author of The Art of War , an immensely influential ancient Chinese book on military strategy (for the most part not dealing directly with tactics ). Sources on Sun Tzu's life
The only surviving source on the life of Sun Tzu is the biography written in the 2nd century BCE by the historian Sima Qian , who describes him as a general who lived in the state of Wu in the 6th century BCE , and therefore a contemporary of one of the great Chinese thinkers of ancient times— Confucius . However, the biography is not consistent with other sources for the period, and both the form and content of The Art of War suggest it was written between 400 BCE and 320 BCE . There is, however no confirmation of any of this at this time. Sun Tzu's own work, The Art of War - which is more correctly called "ping-fa" - appears to provide a number of direct clues to his life. For example, war chariots described by Sun Tzu were used for a relatively brief period ending in the 4th century BCE, so the inclusion of these into his work dates at least part of the work to that time according to some military analysts. Some scholars have concluded that Sun Tzu's work was actually authored by unknown Chinese philosophers and that Sun Tzu did not actually exist as a historical figure. This can be seen further in the way that the historicity of Sun Tzu is discussed extensively in the introduction to Giles' 1910 translation available as a

Sun Tzu
Search all of Sun Tzu Sun Tzu , Chinese general, circa 500 B.C. A collection of essays on the art of war is attributed to Sun Tzu. There are a growing number of translations of this Chinese classic, usually titled The Art of War
Knowledge of Sun Tzu reached Europe shortly before the French Revolution in the form of a summary translation by Father J. J. M. Amiot, a French Jesuit priest. In the various translations, Sun Tzu is sometimes referred to as Sun Wu, and Sun Tzi. The most fundamental of Sun Tzu's principles for the conduct of war is that "All warfare is based on deception". Another key Sun Tzu principle is that "The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting." Sun Tzu's ideas spread to the rest of Asia and to Japan.
The works of Sun Tzu have been widely known in the United States since the mid-1970s. Diplomat Henry Kissinger has made reference to Sun Tzu and the principles for the conduct of warfare has been the subject of serious study in U.S. military circles for many years. The Art of War as applied to business, sports, diplomacy and personal lives has been popularized in American business and management texts. Sun Tzu may be the most frequently quoted Chinese personality in the world today.

SUN TZU C taikonauts into orbit evidence substantial Chinese technical achievement and the seriousness of the program. Those achievements, plus pronouncements about timetables, space laboratories, shuttles, space stations, lunar bases, and now Mars missions, naturally make one wonder just what the Chinese are up to. Is there a new, twenty-first-century space race brewing? If there is, who is racing, and toward what goal? Analysis and commentary have spawned several, often one-dimensional, scenarios. In the case of the former, though much of the Chinese program remains cloaked in secrecy due to both the nature of the Chinese system and the military aspects of the topic, considerable agreement exists among technical analysts concerning Chinese capabilities, now and potentially in the future. Certainly, a Chinese quest for prestige is undeniable. Chinese scientists and policy makers eagerly point out that when (not if) China launches
