Geronimo: His Own Story
The Autobiography of a Great Patriot Warrior
This book contains one of the most extraordinary and invaluable documents in the annals of Native American history - the authentic testament of a remarkable "war shaman" who for several years held off both Mexico and the United States in fierce defense of Apache lands. "I am thankful that the President of the United States has given me permission to tell my story. I hope that he and those in authority under him will read my story and judge whether my people have been rightly treated." - Geronimo
Soiled Doves
Prostitution In The Early West
Anne Seagraves
SOILED DOVES tells of the gray world of prostitution and the women who participated in the oldest profession. Colorful, if not socially acceptable, these ladies of easy virtue were a definite part of the early West - Wearing ruffled petticoats with fancy bows, they were glamorous and plain, good and bad and many were as wild as the land they came to tame.

A BLYTHE AND PALO VERDE VALLEY BIBLIOGRAPHY Here Are A Few Pix I've Just Gotta' Share A Few More Pix For Sharing My Personal Ramblings Pix & Links To Neat Desert "Stuff" ... WOW, I guess a second awards page is necessary! Yes, material has been written about Blythe and the Palo Verde Valley. There are newspaper and magazine articles, plus several academic papers. Even a few books, mostly by local authors, have been published. If you live or have lived in this area or just have an interest in how "civilization" came to our deserts, they are fascinating. Most of them tell of one of the last pioneering efforts in this nation's history.
This bibliography is, by its nature, a short one. I intentionally assembled it with an unconventional format because I wanted to convey samething of each item's content. I'm making no effort to insure its completeness. Hopefully, if you want more information about this area, it will point you in the right direction to find it.
If anybody knows of additional material appropriate to this page, please let me know by e-mail, and I'll add it to the listing.

THE efficiency of the frontier army which averaged about 20,000 men in the period 1855-1875 depended on the food, clothing, ammunition, forage, shelter, livestock and other supplies furnished by the government. The frontier military post, usually at some distance from the settled areas, was almost solely dependent upon supplies brought from a great distance. Gen. W. T. Sherman Report ed in 1869: But sometimes the off-wheeler failed, and then: Report An illustration of the military posts supporting the surrounding settlements was the case of Fort Stanton in the territory of New Mexico. The post was established in 1855 to protect the Rio Grande settlements and to encourage large settlements near it. Neither purpose was fulfilled, for the post was too far away for this protection and only about 1,200 people settled near the post. The distance from other markets made the fort the sole market for the settlers. General Pope in his Report for 1870 makes the following comment on this situation: So far from being self-sustaining, the settlers could sell nothing except to the post, and if it goes they must go also, and that entirely irrespective of Indians.

Fort Apache - in the news since it was established in 1871
By Nancy Kirkpatrick Wright
This summer Fort Apache, located on the White Mountain Indian Reservation, two hundred miles or so east of Prescott, made headlines in newspapers across the country. Real news. Journalists interviewed experts in Washington D.C. and some reporters even traveled the rough and winding roads to the reservation to interview Apache tribal officials.
The first news story was from the judiciary: The United States Supreme Court ruled that the White Mountain Apache tribe has the right to sue the U.S. government for failing to properly maintain historic old Fort Apache.
According to a Baltimore Sun article (reprinted in the Arizona Republic, 6/1/03), the White Mountain Apache tribe had claimed that because the Interior Department has held the Fort in trust since 1960, the Interior Department has a "fiduciary duty to maintain, protect, repair and preserve" this part of their reservation, which had been designated a historic district in 1976. Moreover, other tribes have signed treaties ceding land to the federal government in exchange for a promise that their land be maintained and protected. This could open a big can of worms. Let us leave it unopened and consider the second breaking story:
A month or so later, lightening-caused fires broke out near Kinishba, on the Fort Apache Reservation. Kinishba is the prehistoric ruin which was partially restored in the 1930's and 40's by Dr. Byron Cummings, dean of Southwestern archaeologists, and his students from the University of Arizona. Apache men who helped with the excavation and restoration named the large cluster of ruins "Kinishba," meaning "brown house." It too, has suffered years and years of neglect and could certainly be helped with an infusion of federal funds.

Fort Whipple's Miss Carrie: "The Colonel's Daughter"
By Mick Woodcock
It has been said that one of the main functions of a museum is to tell good stories. That is what we try to do at Sharlot Hall Museum. More often than not, there are more stories than space to tell them. When you can tell the story, there is generally not enough room to tell all of it. Such is the case with Carrie Wilkins.
Miss Carrie is brought to life in an exhibit case on Fort Whipple. The tableaux that features her is intended to bring the human side to what might ordinarily be a story of drums and guns. There are two mannequins in a parlor scene. A young second lieutenant of the Sixth Cavalry has his forage cap in one hand and a bouquet of wild flowers in the other. He has a very earnest look on his face. The female figure, on the other hand, has her face turned away. The fan in her hand is closed, a Victorian sign of disinterest.
On the wall are photographs and information of the Wilkins family. Another caption indicates that this case was inspired by a Charles King novel, The Colonel's Daughter. Legend has it that the heroine in this book was modeled after Carrie Wilkins. A distinct possibility.
King, a young second lieutenant in the Fifth Cavalry in the 1870s, was stationed in central Arizona at the same time as that of the Wilkins family. In the 1880s and 1890s, he drew upon his Army experiences to write numerous novels of the frontier Army. It would be natural for him to use characters based upon real life people that he had known.

AncestorNews: Peek into Past Lives
by Nancy Hendrickson
Was your ancestor on the Oregon Trail, a California gold rush miner or an Army wife on the frontier? If so, you may be one of the lucky ones whose family kept historic diaries or journals. However, your family, like mine, may own only a few photos and little else. If that's the case, you may have to rely on published journals for a peek into their great adventures. My own bookshelves are filled with women's diaries. They primarily cover journeys on the Oregon and Mormon Trails, as well as life in the frontier Army. I love reading how women like Martha Summerhayes, a well-bred New Englander, lived through the Arizona summers and the terror of the Apache Wars. Or, how Margaret Carrington faced the possibility of death at the hands of Army soldiers in the event Sioux and Cheyenne warriors overran Fort Phil Kearney. There's nothing like a period journal to transport a family researcher into the thick of "real life". If you're interested in reading historic journals, try these Web sites:

Mary Colter: Architect of the Southwest
Arnold Berke
Color Photographs by Alexander Vertikoff
Princeton Architectural Press, 2002 Soft cover - $24.95 Mary Colter may well be the best-known unknown architect in the United States. Her buildings at the Grand canyon National Park - which include Indian Watchtower, Hopi House, Bright Angel Lodge, and many others - are admired by almost five million visitors a year. She helped to create the "National Park Service Rustic" style and is also remembered for three classic hotels, El Navajo (Gallup, NM), La Posada (Winslow, AZ), and La Fonda (Santa Fe, NM) where she called on Native American and Hispanic motifs. This extraordinary book is about an extraordinary woman. It weaves together three stores - the early twentieth-century career of a woman in what was then a man's profession; the creation of a building and interior style drawn from regional history and landscapes; and the exploitation of the American Southwest, largely in the hands of the railroads, for leisure travel.

Some notable sight was drawing the passengers, both men and women, to the window; and therefore I rose and crossed the car to see what it was. Padre Ignacio

At Santa Ysabel del Mar the season was at one of those moments when the air rests quiet over land and sea. The old breezes were gone; the new ones were not yet risen. The flowers in the mission garden opened wide; no wind came by day or night to shake the loose petals from their stems.
A Story of Harvard University
Two frowning boys sat in their tennis flannels beneath the glare of lamp and gas. Their leather belts were loosened, their soft pink shirts unbuttoned at the collar. They were listening with gloomy voracity to the instruction of a third. They sat at a table bared of its customary sporting ornaments Mother When handsome young Richard Field announced to our assembled company that if his turn should really come to tell us a story, the story should be no invention of his fancy, but a page of truth, a chapter from his own life
