Historic Trails of Arizona
INTRODUCTION
El Camino del Diablo

From Caborca and Sonoyta in Mexico, the trail crossed into present Arizona west of Quitobaquito Springs, then approximately paralleled the present U.S.Mexico boundary to Tinajas Altas. Turning northward it went to the Gila River, then westward into California. There were few dependable sources of water, and travelers had to rely on rainwater in tinajas, natural depressions found in some volcanic rocks. When these were empty or inaccessible, the journeyers perished.
Following gold discovery in 1849, Sonoran gold seekers from Mexico used the corridor on their way to California. A few years later, the United States negotiated the Gadsden Purchase with Mexico, and most of El Camino became American territory. After the Southern Pacific Railroad reached Yuma in 1877, the route fell into disuse. Today, with proper caution, permits, and four-wheel drive vehicles, adventuresome travelers can retrace parts of El Camino del Diablo.
EARLY SPANISH TRAILS
Starting in 1633, a l75 year-long succession of priests and other Spaniards continued to travel to Hopi via Zuni along this ancient corridor, trying to dominate the Hopis and convert them to Catholicism. But they enjoyed very little success. In 1776 on their famous exploration into Colorado and Utah, Fr. Silvestre Escalante and Fr. Francisco Dominguez, returned to Santa Fe by way of the Zuni-Hopi Trail.

49. OFFICERS WIVES OF THE TENTH CAVALRY
Probably Martha Summerhayes, the wife of an Eighth US Infantry officer, best expressed the feelings of all officers wives when she wrote after returning to

Moving with the Frontier Army
Tenth Cavalry Officers’ Wives Follow the Guidon
In March of 1885, the Tenth U. S. Cavalry received orders of its impending transfer from Fort Davis, Texas to the Department of Arizona. The Tenth, one of two cavalry regiments of African-American troops commanded by white officers, was organized in 1866. It had spent its entire existence on the frontier, first in Kansas and Oklahoma, and then in Texas beginning in 1873. For many officers and their wives, the transfer was welcomed. Others accepted the news hesitantly. A few were angry. They felt the regiment had already "done its time" on the western frontier. Alice Kirk Grierson The Colonel's Lady Alice Kirk Grierson, the wife of the regiment's commander, Colonel Benjamin Grierson, accepted the news stoically. Now fifty-six years of age, she had been following her husband from one western post to another for almost twenty years. This move, however, would be most difficult. For the first time in her ‘army career,’ she would be leaving a child behind. Robert, the second eldest of her four sons, would remain in the Fort Davis area to manage the family's ranch properties. Alice's two youngest sons, Harry and George, would travel with her. Her oldest son, Charles, a second lieutenant in his father's regiment, would be moving with the regiment. Still Alice echoed what she had written years earlier in a letter to her husband when he first accepted a commission in the army: "I have no intention of going back to Illinois for years, if you remain in the Indian Territory. You must remember that I think the comfort of a family depends much more upon the family being together in love, than on the house they are quartered in. . . . I am unwilling to be separated from you any longer than absolutely necessary."

Lakeside Classics
In the introduction to the first Lakeside Classic, he wrote, "If, in a modest way this volume conveys the idea that machine-made books are not a crime against art, and that books may be plain but good, and good though not costly, its mission has been accomplished."
The basic format of the Lakeside Classics has remained the same for more than 100 years, testifying to the sound design of the first volume. Each 25 years the cover material is changed and type style adjusted to keep pace with current developments in fine book making. Production methods are updated as book manufacturing improvements are introduced. Current editions use electronic page composition, digital scanning and state-of-the-art computer-to-plate technologies.
Many of the early volumes consisted of the speeches and writings of noted Americans. With the publication in 1911 of "The Autobiography of Gurdon Saltonstall Hubbard", the series took its present character: first-person narratives of American history, usually taken from books long out of print and not easily obtainable. Through the 1980s, the volumes emphasized history on the North American continent, including titles on the Civil War, the American Old West, early exploration and everyday frontier life. During the 1990s, as the company extended its business internationally, the series was expanded to include narratives by Americans with experiences beyond our borders.
