After a few weeks, however, I began to understand everything she said, altho' I could not yet write or read the language, and I listened with the greatest interest to the story of her marriage with young Lieutenant Weste, of the bringing up of her four children, and of the old days in Hanover, before the Prussians took possession. She described to me the brilliant Hanoverian Court, the endless festivities and balls, the stately elegance of the old city, and the cruel misfortunes of the King. And how, a few days after the King's flight, the end of all things came to her; for she was politely informed one evening, by a big Prussian major, that she must seek other lodgingshe needed her quarters. At this point she always wept, and I sympathized. Thus I came to know military life in Germany, and I fell in love with the army, with its brilliancy and its glitter, with its struggles and its romance

Vanished Arizona CHAPTER I GERMANY AND THE ARMY The stalwart men of the Prussian army, the Lancers, the Dragoons,
the Hussars, the clank of their sabres on the pavements, their
brilliant uniforms, all made an impression upon my romantic mind,
and I listened eagerly, in the quiet evenings, to tales of
Hanover under King George, to stories of battles lost, and the
entry of the Prussians into the old Residenz-stadt; the flight of
the King, and the sorrow and chagrin which prevailed. For I was living in the family of General Weste, the former
stadt-commandant of Hanover, who had served fifty years in the
army and had accompanied King George on his exit from the city. He was a gallant veteran, with the rank of General-Lieutenant, ausser Dienst. A charming and dignified man, accepting First Page Next Page Last Page Read ... Titles Menu

Glittering Misery
Nancy Hendrickson describes the lives of Army officers’ wives on the frontier. MARTHA SUMMERHAYES CROUCHED in the bottom of an Army wagon as it bounced towards Sanford Pass. Her husband, Jack, rode alongside, keeping a sharp lookout for marauding Apache. Her three-month-old son lay helplessly beside her. As the wagon lurched through the narrow cut in the mountains, Martha wondered if she could carry out Jack’s instructions — in case he was wounded, she was to use her loaded derringer on their son and then on herself. A year earlier, Martha was just back from an extended stay in Germany and marriage to Lieutenant Jack Summerhayes. While in Europe, Martha had fallen in love with the romance and chivalry of the army. The handsomely uniformed men “lent a brilliancy to every affair”. She remembered saying to a German general’s wife, “Oh, how fascinating it all is!” and was puzzled at the response. “Life in the army is not always so brilliant as it looks; in fact we often call it glaenzendes Elend — glittering misery.” Now, stationed far from home in “that dreaded Arizona” and steeled for an Apache attack, the glitter seemed a lifetime away and the misery too close for comfort.

ot knowing before I left home just what was needed for house-keeping in the army, and being able to gather only vague ideas on the subject from Jack, who declared that his quarters were furnished admirably, I had taken out with me but few articles in addition to the silver and linen-chests. I began to have serious doubts on the subject of my menage, after inspecting the bachelor furnishings which had seemed so ample to my husband. But there was so much to be seen in the way of guard mount, cavalry drill, and various military functions, besides the drives to town and the concerts of the string orchestra, that I had little time to think of the practical side of life. Added to this, we were enjoying the delightful hospitality of the Wilhelms, and the Major insisted upon making me acquainted with the "real old-fashioned army toddy" several times a day,a new beverage to me, brought up in a blue-ribbon community, where wine-bibbing and whiskey drinking were rated as belonging to only the lowest classes. To be sure, my father always drank two fingers of fine cognac before dinner, but I had always considered that a sort of medicine for a man advanced in years. Taken all in all, it is not to be wondered at if I saw not much in those few days besides bright buttons, blue uniforms, and shining swords.

Introductory Comments
anished Arizona, Recollections of the Army Life by a New England Woman
TO MY SON HARRY SUMMERHAYES
WHO SHARED THE VICISSITUDES OF MY LIFE IN ARIZONA,
THIS BOOK IS AFFECTIONATELY DEDICATED I have written this story of my army life at the urgent and ceaseless request of my children. For whenever I allude to those early days, and tell to them the tales they have so often heard, they always say: "Now, mother, will you write these stories for us? Please, mother, do; we must never forget them." Then, after an interval, "Mother, have you written those stories of Arizona yet?" until finally, with the aid of some old letters written from those very places (the letters having been preserved, with other papers of mine, by an uncle in New England long since dead), I have been able to give a fairly connected story. I have not attempted to commemorate my husband's brave career in the Civil War, as I was not married until some years after the close of that war, nor to describe the many Indian campaigns in which he took part, nor to write about the achievements of the old Eighth Infantry. I leave all that to the historian. I have given simply the impressions made upon the mind of a young New England woman who left her comfortable home in the early seventies, to follow a second lieutenant into the wildest encampments of the American army. Hoping the story may possess some interest for the younger women of the army, and possibly for some of our old friends, both in the army and in civil life, I venture to send it forth.

Baca, Jimmy Santiago, A Place to Stand
An award-winning poet describes in sharp-edged prose his impoverished childhood and his courageous struggle, while in prison, to retain his dignity and redirect his life. Bagley, Will, Blood of the Prophets: Brigham Young and the Massacre at Mountain Meadows
Bagley raised a storm of controversy with his exhaustively documented expose of the 1857 massacre of Arkansas emigrants at Mountain Meadows in southwestern Utah. In fixing the blame on Mormon zealots, Bagley shows how this tragic event raises "larger questions about the human condition, particularly how decent men can, while acting on their best and firmest beliefs, comit a great evil." For a compelling popular account, see Sally Denton's American Massacre: The Tragedy at Mountain Meadows, September 1857

About The Old Fort Lowell Neighborhood Website Background The original Old Fort Lowell Neighborhood exhibit went public in April 1996, under the direction of Micaela Morales, then a systems librarian with the University of Arizona Library. Its appearance was revised in the summer of 2000 and again in the summer of 2001. The current interface (September 20, 2004 - ) was designed by Andrew Bareham of the UA's Learning Technologies Center in the fall of 2004. The online OFLNA's walking tour was added to the website in 2000. The project, of course, would not have been possible without the support and participation of the Old Fort Lowell Neighborhood Association and, in particular, the late Rosalind Spicer's participation. We regard the website as one of her many legacies to this community. Special thanks go to Lannie Hartman who has contributed corrections and updates to this version of The Old Fort Lowell Neighborhood identified from her research. http://www2.tcu.edu/depts/prs/amwest/html/wl0104.html
The Military T HE MILITARY LEGACY of the West, as represented in its literature, is rich in both scope and detail. As C. L. Sonnichsen wrote in From Hopalong to Hud: "All our wars and feuds from Canada to Mexico have been fictionalized, exposing our secret thoughts about ourselves and our friends and enemies" (p. 177). Since nearly every major officer in the Indian Wars left at least one memoir, since enlisted men wrote a number of outstanding narratives, and since quite a few officers' wives left remarkably readable accounts of life on the army frontier, western American novelists and dramatists have long been able to turn to that rich when portraying the military. One battle alone, "Custer's Last Stand," has generated over 2,500 books and pamphlets, a record unequalled by any other American battle. So important and pervasive was the presence of the Army in the nineteenth-century West and so massive and influential has been the outpouring of books about the frontiersmen in blue that the mind and literature of the West cannot be fully understood without some knowledge of that military legacy. The many excellent histories of the Indian wars give the background necessary for understanding what led to frontier conflicts and what happened when the troops saw action. Records left by officers and enlisted men tell the reader what that military experience was like for those who lived it, while reports by scouts and war correspondents add detail and variety to those accounts. By virtue of fine writing, some primary accounts have risen above the level of mere factual reporting and have become important works of western American literature in their own right. Other primary accounts have formed the basis of novels and dramas about the military in the West.

The Southern Border
A DUAL SPIRIT So unique and thorough is this cultural synthesis that a talented Ohioan educated at Kenyon College could come as a young man to El Paso to live and write, take his Mexican wife's name and designate his birthplace as Parral, Chihuahua, and ultimately have his work included in anthologies devoted to Chicano writing. Known as Amado Muro to those who admired his short stories and sketches of Mexican life, Chester Seltzer established his credibility as a Mexican-American writer with critics through sensitive revelation of Mexican personality and culture. Only his close friends knew that Muro was Anglo until after his death in 1971. A complex people with an intricate culture, border Mexicans and Anglos share historically a love of open spaces, an attachment to the arid land along the great river and deserts forming that border, and the endurance required to survive in that isolated and often inhospitable country. Anglos and Mexicans along the Rio Grande and the southern border of the Southwest have been allies fighting common adversaries. They have battled each other. They have married each other. They have hated and loved, detested and admired each other. Loyal friendships between Mexican and Anglo have lasted lifetimes. But duality of understanding has all too often given way to duplicity of character, and traitors on both sides have not been uncommon. Both peoples have considered themselves to be rightful inheritors of the brushy ranchlands between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande, and both have battled Native Americans who claimed that land first.
