ir Arthur Sullivan was successful during the late nineteenth century as a popular composer of music ranging from symphony to hymn, and including chamber music and grand opera. He held positions as organist at London's St. Michael's Church, professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Music, and conductor of the London Philharmonic between 1885 and 1887, and achieved fame initially with music for a production of The Tempest , and for two operettas. David Thomson asserts that Sullivan, with the likes of Sterndale Bennet, Parry, Stanford, and Mackenzie, is representative of the period's emerging "particularly English school of music," which paralleled the renewed power of art and art criticism during the mid-Victorian era (Penguin's England in the Nineteenth Century Although he is most remembered for composing music to the Savoy Operas, a famous collaboration with librettist Sir William S. Gilbert

The music is by Sir Arthur S. Sullivan and the libretto by Sir William S. Gilbert . It was first produced in March in London at the Royalty Theatre, where it ran for 300 performances. It is still very popular for performance today, though its short length means that it rarely forms a full evening's entertainment. Playwright/lyricist William S. "Sullivan was as much a satirist in musical notes as Gilbert in the verbal test. Their repartees in collaboration often reminded of the sarcasms of Voltaire."
SAINT-SAËNS Arthur Seymour Sullivan was born in Lambeth, London, in 1842 to a very musical family. His father was a bandmaster at the Royal Military College and before age 10 Sullivan had mastered all of the wind instruments in his father's band. Sullivan composed his own anthem when he was 8 years old. At age 14 he entered, as the youngest participant, and won the competition for the first Mendelssohn Scholarship. He also won scholarships at several prominent academies and conservatories, the last of which was located in Germany where Franz Liszt listened to Sullivan's final "thesis." Sullivan returned to England at age 20, wrote the "Tempest" and became famous. For the next ten years Sullivan was a professor of music, a teacher, and an organist. Regarded as the leading composer of the day, Sullivan had many influential friends in every circle of society including many monarchs in Europe. In addition to composing "Onward Christian Soldiers," Sullivan also composed several major choral works, including

Sullivan was born of an Italian mother and an Irish father in Lambeth, Surrey (now South London) in 1842. His father was a clarinettist in the royal Surrey Theatre but soon became Master of the Band at the Royal Military School College, Sandhurst, and later still Professor of Brass Band at the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall, Twickenham, Middlesex. Sullivan entered the Chapel Royal in 1854 on the recommendation of Sir George Smart and stayed there until 1858 when he went to Leipzig to study, being the first holder of the Mendelssohn Scholarship. In Leipzig he studied under Hauptmann, Rietz, David, Moscheles and Plaidy. He remained there till 1861 when, steeped in the German musical tradition, yet having developed his own personal style, he returned to England with the score of his recently completed incidental music to Shakespeare's The Tempest . It was performed in 1862 at a Crystal Palace concert under August Manns and was soon repeated in Manchester. In 1864 Sullivan composed his ballet L'Ile enchantee for Covent Garden and became organist there soon after. Here he received first hand experience of opera which was at that time under the direction of Sir Michael Costa. Costa suggested to the Birmingham Festival committee of 1864 that they commission a work from Sullivan. The result was a setting of H.F. Chorley's

Name: Arthur Seymour Sullivan, Sir Birth Date: May 14, 1842 Death Date: November 22, 1900 Place of Birth: London, England Place of Death: London, England Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: composer Arthur Seymour Sullivan, Sir Main Biography The English composer Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan (1842-1900) collaborated with the librettist Sir William Gilbert to produce operettas that are the finest examples of light, satirical comedy in the English musical theater. Arthur Sullivan had a thorough schooling in music, beginning early with instruction from his father, who was then bandmaster at the Royal Military College in London. His studies continued at the Chapel Royal, where he was enrolled as a chorister at the age of 12, then at the Royal Academy of Music, and at the Leipzig Conservatory (1858-1861). It was a musical education in the conservative German mode of the time, which was as strongly entrenched in England as in Germany itself. Sullivan then entered on a career marked by versatility and enormous popular success. At first he earned his way as an organist. Later he turned to conducting and held a variety of posts, notably as conductor of the Philharmonic Society of London (1885-1887) and of the Leeds Festival (1880-1899). He also taught composition at the Royal Academy of Music and was the first director of the Royal College of Music.

    Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900)
The following article was first published in the
Vauxhall Society's Newsletter in April 1979
Arthur Sullivan, who revitalised British music in Queen Victoria's reign was born in Lambeth. His parents, Thomas and Maria, spent their honeymoon in 1838 as the first tenants of No 8 in the newly built Bolwell Terrace. Thomas earned a guinea a week for clarinet playing and paid an annual rent of £22. The first of his two children, Frederic, was born in 1839, and on 13 May 1842 Arthur Sullivan was born. He was christened in St Mary-at-Lambeth and the organ of this church was probably the first he ever played. Bolwell Terrace (later renamed Bolwell Street) was a turning off Lambeth Walk. Part of it was demolished about 1951 and the remainder finally disappeared in the redevelopment of Lambeth Walk in the early 1970s. Until its demolition Sullivan' s house was identifiable by a plaque put up by the Incorporated Society of Musicians. Thanks to Spike Milligan the front door of 8 Bolwell Terrace is preserved in the Museum of London, but the whereabouts of the plaque is unknown. However, Sullivan's early connexion with the neighbourhood was recently revived when Monkton Street SE11 was divided by the building of a new children's home; the eastern end of the street was renamed Sullivan Road (Gilbert Road is on the opposite side of the Lambeth Hospital site). In 1845 Sullivan's father became Bandmaster at Sandhurst Military College, and here Arthur learnt all the instruments he could find. Aged 11, he became a Chapel Royal chorister and lived with his nine fellow choristers at 6 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea. Aged 14, he won the new Mendelssohn scholarship which sent him to the Royal Academy of Music, and later to Leipzig, aged 16. His father's sacrifices enabled him to study for two and a half years in Leipzig, where he was popular but despite being feted, lived a frugal existence. But it was exciting too. Grieg was a fellow-student; he met Liszt; fell in love with both Clara Barnett and her sister Rosamund; and in August 1860 saw the fiercest storm ever experienced in Germany. Sullivan set to work on his Shakespearean "Tempest" music.

    Sir Charles Groves, conductor
This recording was the first appearance of Sullivan's "Irish" Symphony on disc, and indeed, the first modern recording of anything substantial outside of the operas. Groves gives a somewhat dull reading of the score, which has been eclipsed, I feel, by the more recent Hughes/BBC recording. The Overture di Ballo , of course, has been recorded many times, and there is nothing remarkable about this reading of it. The issue history below chronicles the release of these items as a pair. Follow the hyperlinks to the sections on Symphony in E and Overture di Ballo for reissue details of the items individually.
