male lived: biography: Poet and warrior, born in Iceland. His father had emigrated to Iceland after falling foul of King Harald of Norway, and Egill became a professional Viking and court-poet. He fought in the service of King Athelstan of England at the Battle of Brunanburh (937), fell out with King Erik Blood-Axe Haraldsson of Norway, but visited him when he was king in the city of York in 948. There he only escaped execution by composing a eulogy in Erik's honour, the (Head Ransom). In 960 he lost two young sons, and composed the greatest lament in Old Icelandic poetry, Sonatorrek (On the Loss of Sons). Heimskringla is the old norse name of a collection of sagas recorded in Iceland around by the poet and historian Snorri Sturluson (1179-1242). The collection contains tales about the Norwegian kings , beginning with the legendary Swedish dynasty of the House of Ynglings , followed by accounts of more historical Norwegian rulers of the to centuries, up to the death of Eysteinn Eysteinsson in The Heimskringla traces Odin and his followers from the East, from Asaland and Asgard , its chief city, to their settlement in Scandinavia . It narrates the contests of the kings, the establishment of the kingdoms of Norway Sweden , and Denmark , the Viking expeditions, the discovery and settlement of Iceland and Greenland , the discovery of America , and the conquests of England and Normandy . The stories are told with a life and freshness, giving a picture of human life in all its reality. Some of the Sagas of the "Heimskringla" are romances, full of adventures, while at the same time they lie completely within the range of history and may be regarded as authentic. Hun fikke ikke rammet øyet til Sturla men kinnet slik at det ble et stort sår. Sturla krevde store bøter for såret. Presten Páll søkte hjelp hos Jón Loftsson i Oddi, en av de største høvdingene på Island. Jón Loftsson klarte å få Sturla til å gi etter på sine krav og inngå et forlik med Páll. For å sikre forliket tilbød Jón seg å oppfostre Sturlas sønn Snorri. Tre år gammel ble derfor Snorri brakt til Oddi på Rangávöllum, et av landets viktigste lærdomssteder helt fra den tid Jóns farfar, Sæmundur fróði, levde. Den uoppgjorte arvetvisten og Þorbjörgs knivstikk førte med seg en viktig vending for islandsk litteratur. Det at Snorri fikk oppforstring på et slikt lærdomssted som Oddi var hadde alt å si for den Snorri Sturluson, som er blitt verdenskjent. I Oddi fikk Snorro lært både geistlig lærdom, selv om han aldri ble viet, og han lærte latin og ikke minst diktene og fortellingene, de islandske sagaene og det av islandsk litteratur som fantes i de dager.
