Bloomsbury Group
Desmond MacCarthy's claim that there "is little in common between the work of Lytton Strachey, Virginia Woolf"> Woolf , Clive Bell"> Bell, David Garnett, Roger Fry, Maynard Keynes, Leonard Woolf, Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, E. M. Forster" ( Memories 172) is a useful starting point. It provides the necessary names, his own included, and raises the crucial issue of the nature of the group. Some have made stronger claims for Bloomsbury, especially Forster, who once described it "as the only genuine movement in English civilization" (Rosenbaum, Bloomsbury Group 25), but MacCarthy's comment that they "were neither a movement, nor a push, but only a group of old friends" (172) is closer to the way most of these "old friends" saw their relationship. "We were and always remained," in Leonard Woolf's estimation, "primarily and fundamentally a group of friends. . . . We had no common theory, system or principles which we wanted to commit the world to" ( Beginning 23-25). Clive Bell's answer to his own rhetorical question, "But did such an entity exist? All one can truthfully say is this. A dozen friends" (Rosenbaum, Bloomsbury 87), sums up the Bloomsbury view of itself.

Guardian Friday June 25, 1999
An ambitious attempt was launched yesterday to rescue the word Bloomsbury from a century of derision. Members of the Bloomsbury Set are to be rehabilitated as serious artists, pioneering liberal thinkers and fanatically hard workers, rather than people who "lived in squares but loved in triangles". An exhibition at the Tate gallery, in London this winter will concentrate on the painters in the group - Roger Fry, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant - but will take in the life of novelist Virginia Woolf and the set's circle of friends and lovers, including essayist Lytton Strachey and economist John Maynard Keynes.

Emma Thompson dogs Jonathan Pryce in 'Carrington' By Richard von Busack A tale of hopeless love among the literati, Carrington provides Emma Thompson with a grand, Oscar-bait role as the painter Dora Carrington, who was the lifelong companion of Lytton Strachey (1880-1932), influential critic, historian and homosexual. Carrington and Strachey were all part of the Bloomsbury tangle, probably what the late, lamented Kingsley Amis was referring to in Lucky Jim when Dixon tells a woman, "I know you're all frightfully keen on marrying men you don't like." Strachey was the author of the must-read 1918 Eminent Victorians, a revisionist biography of four monumental personalities. It's a very modern read, written by someone who retainedunlike so many other moderns nowthe hope that logic would save the world. In the directorial debut effort by the writer Christopher Hampton ( Dangerous Liaisons ), Strachey makes an unlikely hero. Jonathan Pryce ( Brazil ) plays him as a frail, tweedy, vegetating critic with a huge muff of a beard. Carrington, who preferred to be addressed by her last name, is here smitten abjectly, realizing that she loves Strachey even as she tries to literally beard him in his den with a pair of scissors. (It is her way of punishing the author for his impulsively stealing a kiss.) A friend of Carrington's suitor, Mark (Rufus Sewell), Strachey is inveigled into persuading the painter to surrender her virginity to the younger man. The awful sex that results convinces Carrington to live in a chaste menage with Stracheyeven as she eventually marries and takes lovers, none of whom can touch her soul as much as the fussy critic.

Addison, Joseph
The eldest son of a cleric, Addison eventually found himself at Oxford (Queen's and Magdalen). He wrote favourable (whether commissioned, or not) articles concerning certain powerful people and their works; he was duly rewarded with a pension of £300 which allowed Addison to travel extensively throughout the continent for four years. With the victory at Blenheim , in 1704, Addison was commissioned to write The Campaign and this led to further political patronage; he was appointed as a Commissioner of Excise Taxes (the only significant taxes they had in those days). The job as a commissioner, presumably, took little of Addison's time and he was left to pursue his writing. While he had contributed to the Tatler (started by Steele in 1709), Addison started his own paper in 1711, the Spectator ("In the Spectator may be traced the foundations of all that is sound and healthy in modern English thought."
