Biographical Sketch
Giles Lytton Strachey was born in 1880, the eleventh of thirteen children, to General Sir Richard Strachey and his wife Jane Grant. Though he spent some years at boarding schools, including Abbotsholme and Leamington College, he received much of his education at home. His mother enjoyed strong interests in literature and politics and Strachey met many of the leading writers and thinkers of the day when they came to visit Lady Strachey. Strachey's secondary education was completed at University College in Liverpool where he studied Latin, Greek, mathematics, and English literature and history. It was at University College that he met and was influenced by Walter Raleigh, a professor of English literature and well known biographer. After failing to receive a scholarship to Oxford in 1899, Strachey decided to attend Cambridge where he developed many friendships which lasted the rest of his life. At Cambridge he met Clive Bell, Thoby Stephen, and Leonard Woolf, with whom he started the Midnight Society and the X Society. Along with many other future "Bloomsberries" he was elected to the Apostles. In 1903 fellow Apostle G.E. Moore's

Lytton Strachey
"The duality of his temperament found a parallel in certain physical characteristics. He spoke with two voices. The one tiny as that of the gnat in Alice and Wonderland ; the other grave and deep. [...] There was a similar contrast in his demeanor; an extreme passivity bordering on lassitude was apt to be broken by the most fantastic gesticulation when he repudiated some enormity or hailed an extravagance that delighted him."

Born 1st. March, 1880, at Clapham Common South Side, London; died 21st. January, 1932, in Hungerford, Berkshire.
British biographer and essayist. His father was Sir Richard Strachey, an Indian civil engineer and soldier. His mother was the essayist Lady Jane Strachey. He was the eleventh child and was named after his godfather, the first earl of Lytton, viceroy of India. He attended Abbotshulme School, and then went to Leamington College and Liverpool University where he studied history. In 1899 he also went to Trinity College, Cambridge where he became a member of the Apostles and he began life-long friendships with G. E. Moore, John Maynard Keynes E. M. Forster , Leonard Woolf, and Clive Bell who became members of the Bloomsbury Group . He also had long, leisurely, intimate conversations with Thoby Stevens, Virginia Woolf 's brother. He wrote verse and Ely: An Ode won the Chancellor's Medal. He failed to get a fellowship at Cambridge and left in 1905. However, he often visited the town over the following years to take part in the intellectual life and to be with John Maynard Keynes who had become a lover. One of the handsome young men that he was attracted to was his cousin Duncan Grant , but Lytton Strachey was disappointed when Duncan Grant later showed that he preferred John Maynard Keynes by going to live with him.

Strachey had transformed the art of biography with his ground-breaking Eminent Victorians in 1918. In this year, 1928, he had published Elizabeth and Essex . He then began work on his Portraits in Miniature , published in 1931. Short-sighted and lanky, he was described by Cecil Beaton as "immensely tall, and could be even twice his height if were not as bent [no pun apparently intended] as slopppy asparagus."

It is most gratifying to me to think that you like my book. Carlyle's remark, which you quote, about "wise oblivion and wise memory" is excellent. But it is sad to reflect how much un wise oblivion there has been in the world, and how many singular events there must have been in the histories of eminent persons, which we shall never know! . . ."

Name: Giles Lytton Strachey Birth Date: March 1, 1880 Death Date: January 21, 1932 Place of Birth: London, England Place of Death: Hungerford, England Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: writer Giles Lytton Strachey Main Biography Giles Lytton Strachey (1880-1932) was an English biographer and critic known for his satire of the Victorian Era. Lytton Strachey was born in London on March 1, 1880. He was the eleventh of thirteen children of an upper-middle-class family. His father, Sir Richard Strachey, was a colonial Indian civil servant and civil engineer and a British army general; he was a typical Victorian explorer/scientist. Sir Richard's second wife, Lytton's mother, was the daughter of Sir J. P. Grant of Rothiemurchus and was keen on French literature; she influenced Lytton's precocious literary talent. Even though Lytton's family members on both sides were well-connected and prosperous, the large parental home in unfashionable Bayswater was "suffocating" to him. He was a spoiled child, of frail health, and always withdrawn. Even so, he had an iron will and sat in cultural judgment of the world his parents inhabited: the Victorian era.
