The Iowa Authors Collection "In 1945 the University of Iowa Library entrusted to one of its long-time librarians, Grace Wormer, the task of forming a special collection of books written by Iowa authors," wrote Frank Paluka in Iowa Authors: A Bio-bibliography of Sixty Native Writers (Iowa City: Friends of the University of Iowa Libraries, 1967). "An Iowa author, for the purpose of this collection, was considered to be any writer born in the state or definitely associated with Iowa who had written at least one published book. For non-native writers, a definite association with the state was usually interpreted to mean a residence in Iowa of twenty years or more." By 1967, the collection included the work of more than 800 writers. A 1993 article in by Robert McCown in Books at Iowa gives more details on the history of the collection.

(For back issues, please see our archives) EDITORIAL Some of us can look back on the 1980s as a decade in which new galleries dealing in historic California art were opening every few months. We also remember that the swell was quashed with the 1989 recession. However, the trend to open art galleries seems to be re-establishing itself in recent months, a sign that the economy is indeed turning around. Here are some of the new galleries that have come to my attention:
  • Hauk Fine Arts , 206 Fountain Ave., Pacific Grove, Ca. 93950. 831-373-6007 or 800-393-HAUK. Fax: 831-373-6076. Hauk primarily deals in Early California art but handles possibly a dozen contemporary California artists. It was Hauk who several years ago, created the well known video on the history of California art for the Monterey Museum. Gerry Byrne , 317 Kingsbury Drive, Rio Del Mar, Ca. 95003. 831-684-9345. He is interested in purchasing all quality California pictures through 1960. His particular interest areas are Art and Artists of the Carmel-Monterey Area; Society of Six; Plein Air Painters of the North and South; and Bay Area Figurative Art of the 1950s and 1960s.

The motor coach left from OCMA’s parking lot at 8:30 a.m. on the dot and carried members directly to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art where they were treated to a private pre-opening tour of Sargent in Italy, the museum’s focal traveling exhibition. Sargent is known for his technical virtuosity and his positive, upbeat Mediterranean subjects. Following lunch at Campanile Restaurant on La Brea, the winner of many cooking awards, the group visited three Los Angeles commercial galleries that placed their best works on view especially for us. Fort Wayne Planning Department: Historic Preservation Fort Wayne Planning Department Fort Wayne Historic Architectural Resources Local Historic Districts Historic Preservation Review Board ... Links The cultural and historic resources in the Fort Wayne Cultural Resources Inventory are identified according to property type, which usually reflects the original use, such as house, commercial building, bridge, cemetery, etc. When historic names are known, such as the original or early homeowner (e.g. Thurman Sparkman House) or original names of public, institutional, or commercial properties (e.g. Fairfield Manor), they are included. Houses and buildings in the report are also identified according to folk (or vernacular) form, or academic architectural style. Folk houses and buildings are those built by carpenters and builders who lack specific architectural training, but instead follow standards for design and construction based on ethnic heritage, local standards, or tradition. Most folk house types and forms can be traced to European sources. In folk and vernacular structures, the intended function often dictates the design, size, shape, and methods and materials of construction. Folk building traditions can be passed from generation to generation for centuries with little or no change in appearance. Few purely folk buildings remain in Fort Wayne. Academic architecture (or architect-designed houses and buildings) is quite different, in that buildings are designed by trained professionals who work to follow or even set national and international architectural trends. Considerations of style and aesthetics are as important as function, with the goal as a balance of all elements. Because the emphasis on style and fashion is so great, architectural styles grow in popularity, evolve, and fade over time. Often, early examples of a style are quite different from late examples.

Marker on gate says 1907-1927 This cemetery is outside of Coatesville, PA near the village of Wagontown. The Site is on Waterworks Road. This road meets US Route 340 west of the center of the village (firehouse). The cemetery is past the dam and waterworks. At this time there is no synagogue in area. I am unsure when the one in Coatesville closed. I know that is was there in the 1960's. It was on south 5th Ave. near what was a Baptist Church. I believe the synagogue is now Zion A.M.E. The closest synagogue would be either in West Chester or Lancaster. This is an active cemetery at this time. My last visit was July 1, 2001.
