The exhibition was opened by prominent Australian novelist, Brian Castro
Read Brian's opening speech online. Introduction In 1940, Englishman J. I. M. Stewart, then Professor of English at the University of Adelaide gave the first Commonwealth Literary Fund Lecture in Adelaide. After thanking the CLF for providing the funds to give these lectures in Australian Literature, he declared that 'unfortunately they have neglected to provide any literature - I will lecture therefore on D H Lawrence's Kangaroo' This blatant example of intellectual snobbery allowed Stewart to conveniently ignore over 120 years of Australian writing. In the same year that Stewart gave his lecture, E Morris Miller published his monumental two-volume bibliography of Australian literature. In it he listed and critically discussed, the works of major writers completely ignored by Stewart. A dozen authors come quickly to mind: Marcus Clarke, Henry Kingsley, Catherine Helen Spence, Rolf Boldrewood, Ada Cambridge, Jessie Couvreur (Tasma), Henry Lawson, Banjo Paterson, Barbara Baynton, Henry Handel Richardson, Vance Palmer and Martin Boyd. And, of course, there are many many others.

INTRODUCTION
The papers of the Democratic governor of Missouri, 1937-1941, relates to official business, campaigns, and personal affairs.
DONOR INFORMATION
The Lloyd C. Stark Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Stark on 18 June 1943 (Accession No. 40). An addition to the collection was made by Mrs. Lloyd C. Stark on 10 March 1980 (Accession No. 4274).
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Lloyd Crow Stark was born on 23 November 1886, in Louisiana, Missouri, to Clarence McDowell and Lillie Crow Stark. In 1908 he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and married Margaret Pearson Stickney of Baltimore, Maryland. Margaret died in 1930 leaving two sons, Lloyd Stickney and John Wingate Stark. In 1931 Lloyd C. Stark married Katherine Lemoine Perkins of St. Louis, Missouri, and they had two daughters, Mary Murray Spottswood and Katherine Lemoine Stark. Lloyd Stark served in the U.S. Navy from 1908 until 1912, when he returned to Louisiana, Missouri, and was elected vice-president and general manager of Stark Brothers Nurseries. His business career was interrupted by World War I when he volunteered for the army and served in the United States and France taking part in the 1918 Muese-Argonne offensive. Stark returned to his business position following the war and advanced to chairman of the board in 1934. Stark served in numerous business and civic organizations throughout his life. He first entered politics in 1928 as general chairman of Missouri’s $75,000,000 State Highway Bond Campaign. He was elected governor of Missouri in 1936 and served one term from 1937 to 1941. During his term as governor he served as chairman of the Governor’s Conference of the United States and chairman of the Council of State Governments. Some notable accomplishments of his administration include balancing the state budget, establishing the Ellis Fischel State Cancer Hospital in Columbia, establishing a merit system for selection of state employees, passage of a police reorganization bill, and the abolition of interstate trade barriers. In addition, Stark is credited with the breakup of the Pendergast political machine in Kansas City.

Shoppolis Islands Information Twin Wolves (in pewter) by Gaston Winston Peale The Kissing Squirrels Jewelry Box One of the most famous pieces of art on SI is the "Kissing Squirrels" jewelry box, a magnificent work in pewter and oak. The piece was made from galley ware from the Prize Mary, our first ship. The oak was taken from parts of the ship when she was dismantled where Kitt is now. Alan Page Gates, an original able seaman aboard the ship had taken ill in his small shop. He had no wife at the time, and was alone. During his illness, Margaret Stiles Blaine Shopp, wife of Captain Everett Shopp tended to him and, in his opinion, "saved my life." For this, he made the Kissing Squirrels jewelry box for her. Over time, Gates became one of SI's most noted maker of jewelry cases and music boxes.
