Today of course Irving is forgotten except in the annals of theatre, while Bram Stoker is remembered worldwide for his own creation of an enduring character, Dracula. Abraham Stoker was born in Dublin, Ireland, to a civil servant father and writer mother, and followed into both of their professions. After graduating from Trinity College in Dublin as a mathematician in 1867, he joined the local civil service where he stayed for ten years, while writing as a part-time freelancer. For five years he was drama critic for the Dublin Evening Mail. He became friends with Sir Henry Irving and in 1878 agreed to move to England and become the actor's secretary and manager of his London-based Lyceum Theatre, a job he held for the next twenty-seven years. His first book, written before he left his native land, was not exactly a popular blockbuster, entitled as it was The Duties of Clerks of Petty Sessions in Ireland (1878), but became a standard text in the field. But while working for Irving, he began to write short stories and novels with a little more, though still limited, success.

Bram Stoker (1847-1912) studied at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He earned a degree in science (with honors) in 1868 and a master's degree in mathematics in 1872. Stoker began work as a civil servant at Dublin Castle in 1868. He also worked as an unpaid drama critic for the Dublin Evening Mail , and later, as a business manager of the Lyceum Theatre. Stoker's first book, The Duties of Clerks of Petty Sessions in Ireland, was published in 1879. His short story collection, Under the Sunset, was published in 1882. In 1892, Stoker began writing Dracula. Stoker's childhood illness, which had hysteria-like symptoms, may have led him to imagine the predicament he would later create for his vampire victims.

The Real Bram Stoker's Dracula
Who was Francis Ford Coppola trying to kid? In naming his 1992 vampire movie Bram Stoker's Dracula , the famed director ( The Godfather Apocalypse Now ) was obviously suggesting that here at last, after many a prior celluloid adulteration, was the story of the bloodthirsty Transylvanian nobleman as originally told in the 1897 novel Dracula by the British writer Bram Stoker. So what happens? We are barely settled in our multiplex seats when we find that Coppola's film is based on a premise found nowhere in Stoker's novelnamely the idea that Dracula, as a mortal in the 15th century, has a beloved wife whom he loses to suicide; that the count then becomes a vampire as punishment for cursing God; and that his 19th-century lady victim is none other than his lost love reincarnated. Were he alive, Dracula's creator Stoker would surely ask Coppola, "Say what?" But then Stoker never saw Boris Karloff, as the ancient Egyptian Imhotep, pursuing his lost love into the 20th century, in the 1932 horror film The Mummy . Had he seen such a story line, Stoker might have said, "Hmm. Why didn't I think of that?" So maybe Coppola (or his screenwriters) sort of thought of it

Dr. Jeanne Keyes Youngson, president and founder of the BRAM STOKER MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION, first became aware of Stoker as an individual in his own right when she read Harry Ludlam's A Biography of Dracula: The Life Story of Bram Stoker in 1964.
Indeed, until the publication of Ludlam's book in '62, little was known of Stoker except that he had worked at the Lyceum Theatre in London as Acting Manager for the renowned stage performer, Henry Irving.
Ludlam's biography surely set Youngson's subconscious working overtime. In 1965 while on a trip to Romania, she conceived the idea of starting a Dracula Fan Club in honor of Stoker's Count, Vlad Dracula the Impaler, and of course Stoker himself.

Biography of Bram Stoker (1847-1912)
Bram Stoker Writer of one of the world's most famous horror novels, Abraham Stoker was born to the loosely defined socio-cultural group known as the Anglo-Irish. A Protestant Dubliner, he was the son of a civil servant, and he was expected to follow in his father's footsteps. As a child, Abraham Stoker was a sickly child often on the point of death?by his own account, he never stood upright without aid until he was seven years old. But he grew into a physically robust youth, excelling in athletics during his college years. At Trinity College, he studied mathematics and became president of the Philosophical Society and the Historical Society. The many years with Henry Irving were full of hard work and sacrifice, as Stoker frequently put his work before his family. His only child, Noel, was born in 1879. Noel later felt that Stoker's work for Irving wore out the devoted younger man. There was constant touring and promotional work to be done, throughout the British Isles and as far away as North America. It was during these years that Stoker wrote his greatest novel, Dracula (1897). In 1905, Irving collapsed and died while on tour in Sheffield. Stoker was so profoundly affected by the death of his friend and hero that he suffered a stroke. After Irving's death, Stoker continued to write fiction and do newspaper work until his own death in 1912.

This was the chance for him to develope a passion for reading, prelude to his passion for writing. At The Trinity College of Dublin, he got involved in literary and dramatic activities. After graduation, he became a civil servant, a job that he combined in 1871 with a position of dramatic critic at the Evening Mail. In 1876, after covering Henry Irving's performance in Hamlet, he met the actor and they became lifelong friends. His reputation as a writer was initiated in 1872, when The London Society published The Crystal Cup, a short story. In 1878, Bram moved to London after he had married Oscar Wilde's ex-mistress Florence Balcombe. There he became the acting manager of Irving's Lyceum Theatre.
