Acker, Kathy Kathy Goes to Haiti (Toronto, 1978). 1st edition. Early Kathy, her 3rd trade publication and 7th book. 500 copies printed. Fine in pink and black pictorial wrappers. Acker does her usual rendition of the pissed-off grrrl and proud of it, with graphic sex, spooky voodoo, exotic travel, piston hips, smashed up rules of language, a constant foiling of time and place and every dirty word you've ever heard, all of it titillatingly autobiographical in the distinctive, highly realist, post-modern gangsta style of a rebellious, willful and innovative author. Acker's books have yet to be burned. Maybe that's because they were issued in such small numbers or maybe it's because they've not circulated in overly righteous neighborhoods, but I guess that the troops in the war on joy, fear being poisoned by the fumes.

EUROPEANS IN TAHITI: FROM COOK TO GAUGUIN
Dr. Charles F. Urbanowicz / Professor of Anthropology
California State University, Chico / Chico, California 95929-0400
e-mail: curbanowicz@csuchico.edu / home page: http://www.csuchico.edu/~curban http://www.csuchico.edu/~curban/TahitiAndEuropeansFa2004.html 6 November 2004 for a presentation(with numerous visuals) at the Anthropology Forum at California State University, Chico, on November 4, 2004, and modified (with one addition) concerning an auction of a Gauguin painting by Sotheby's on November 4, 2004. My appreciation goes to Ms. Debra Besnard and Mr. Stan Griffith and their " Digital Asset Management Project " in the Meriam Library at CSU, Chico for the work they did for some of my slides used today. ABSTRACT: The Pacific Ocean represents one-third of the globe and it was explored and colonized by indigenous inhabitants well before the Europeans "discovered" and mapped the islands for the rest of the world to "discover" and explore. Before discussing Captain James Cook (1728-1779) and the illustrious Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), information will be provided about the indigenous inhabitants who first "discovered" these islands and inhabited them long before Europeans arrived. Issues concerning "peopling and prehistory" will be covered as well as "culture contact" in Tahiti. For additional information concerning "Mapping the Islands of the Pacific: Islanders And Others (Including Cook and Darwin)," please see

Review Article by Hiroaki Sato I always notice that when the Japanese expand and even impose ideas on others, it is the time when they have none of them. Through the Torii , Yone Noguchi [sic] than any I have seen for some time,h and followed this pronouncement with a suggestion that Nishiwaki be nominated for the Nobel Prize (as he duly was). As a result, Japanese writers have tended to make extravagant claims for Noguchi and Nishiwaki. The recent publication, by Associated University Presses, of Selected English Writings of Yone Noguchi, Vol. 1, Poetry, in 1990, and Vol. 2, Prose, in 1992, The two volumes also allow us to consider the kind of gadvertiser of Japanismh ( Nihon-shugi no sendensha that Noguchi was and, although Hakutani virtually ignores this aspect, why Noguchi ended up as gone of the most bitter and shrill exponents of Japanese conquest.h (Nishiwaki, in contrast, became one of a handful of Japanese writers who chose to keep quiet during the war years.) Reading Noguchifs first two books, and The Voice of the Valley (1897), both published in San Francisco, one thinks not so much of Willa Catherfs comment in her review of them

Average Customer Review: US Canada United Kingdom Germany ... Japan Editorial Review This book gathers the work of more than 100 female poets, of primarily British and American descent, since the 17th century. Emma Donoghue's astute introductory essay suggests a coherent tradition between the poetry of pre-20th-century romantic friendships and explicit contemporary lesbian poetry. She includes work by well-known writers such as Aphra Behn, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Adrienne Rich, and Audre Lorde, and also introduces the work of lesser-known historical writers. The brief biographies of the poets at the end of the book illustrate not only the varied backgrounds of these writers working outside the mainstream, but also the kinds of networks and alliances they formed to sustain one another. ... Read more Reviews (1) A Treasure Trove this book is fabulous! Emma Donoghue's introduction provides fascinatingcontextual information, guiding the reader through attitudes toward lovebetween women from the late 1660s to the early 1990s. The poems themselvesfairly leap off the page with lives of their own.Donoghue selected poemswhich are quite accessible and widely varied.I did have some troublegetting past the melodrama of some of the earlier work, but once I did, Idiscovered many, many truly delightful poems illuminating the myriadaspects of women's love for one another. At the end of the book is asection of biographical notes about the poets which is intriguing on itsown. This volume would be an asset to anyone's library. ...
