Gertrude Atherton
If she had belonged to a later generation no doubt she would have taken to the pen herself, and artistic expression wouldpossiblyhave absorbed and safe-guarded her during the remainder of her genetic years; but such a thing never occurred to her. She was too modest in the face of master work, and only queer freakish women wrote, anyhow, not ladies of her social status. From Sleeping Fires Gertrude Atherton drew on both the historical moment and her personal experiences to write dozens of short stories, essays, and novels about life in nineteenth-century California. Her portraits of the territory before the Gold Rush and the state after gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill were very different from those of writers far better-known today, like Mark Twain and Bret Harte. Atherton's depictions of California focused on urban life rather than the mining camp and the upper classes rather than the sourdoughs and Chinese laborers. She often wrote about the high society of San Francisco in which she herself had been raised and in which she dwelled as a married woman. It was only after her husbandGeorge Atherton, whose family gave their name to a Bay Area citydied in 1887, when Atherton was 30, that she began to write. Over the next six decades, she would write hundreds of letters, essays, literary criticism, a lengthy autobiography, and dozens of works of fiction. With works such as a collection of short stories

[C.G.] Jung may in a careless moment have let slip a prejudicious slur; [Ernest] Jones may have wanted to draw the line at having homosexual colleagues; the Dutch and Germans may have also felt some of his reserve; but from the very beginnings of the transplanting of psychoanalysis onto these shores, American analysts have tended to view homosexuality with disapproval and have actually wanted to get rid of it altogether." "In another bit of hearsay, Black Elk encouraged speculation about the relationship of Curly and Hump when he reported: 'They say people used to wonder at the boy and the old man always being together; but I think Hump knew Crazy Horse would be a great man and wanted to teach him everything.' The remark hints at a possible sexual relationship between Curly and Hump. Such a relationship might be supported in some people's minds by the fact that Crazy Horse did not many until he was about thirty-one years old, late for a first marriage by both Indian and white standards of the nineteenth century ..." "Speculation about Crazy Horse's sexuality also might be fueled by the fact that he did not marry until after Hump had been killed and that among his friends as a boy was Woman's Dress, know in his youth as Pretty One ... Woman's Dress was a well-known winkte or homosexual." p.89.
