Stewarton Bonnet Guild Chess Allegro 2005 and the Ayrshire Junior Championships
Organised by Stewarton Chess Club in Association with the Stewarton Bonnet Guild and the Ayrshire Chess Association Held on Sunday 12th June 2005 in the Stewarton Annick Youth Centre, Stewarton. It was another great year with 121 people playing on the day. Once again we played host to the Ayrshire Junior Championships as part of our tournament and we were happy to send nearly forty players home with a prize from the tournament. Nearly fifty of the entries came from Ayrshire clubs with another fifty from clubs in the Glasgow area. Other players hailed from as far afield as Dundee to Campletown, from Oban to Edinburgh, and Stirling, Thornhill, Perth, Grangemouth, Glenrothes and the Isle of Arran. Several groups of school children from West Kilbride Primary, from Bishopton Primary in Renfrew, from Whitehurst Park Primary in Kilwinning and from Glebe Primary in Irvine also attended and won a fair number of the prizes on offer. Stewarton Chess Club would like to thank John Elliott and the other officials from the Bonnet Guild committee for their assistance in setting up and running the tournament again this year. Our sincere thanks also go to local company McCluskey Browne who donated the medals awarded during the prizegiving. We are also grateful to Brian the caretaker of the Youth Centre who so ably coped with large numbers of players.

OUR AREA Stewarton Stewarton, (population 6691) is pleasantly situated in open countryside 6 miles north of Kilmarnock. The town motto ‘Knit Weel’ reflects Stewarton’s long connection with the wool trade and a major centre of bonnet manufacture for over 4 centuries being known as the "Bonnet Toon". The Bonnet Court of Corsehill dates from 1549. During the 18 th and 19 th centuries, blanket making and the weaving of cotton and muslin were important industries, though they were largely superseded by knitwear and hosiery in more recent times. Light engineering was established during the Second World War. David Dale, the creator of the model town at New Lanark, was born in Stewarton.

PARISH OF STEWARTON
PRESBYTERY OF IRVINE, SYNOD OF GLASGOW AND AYR
THE REV. CHARLES BANNATYNE STEVEN, MINISTER.
1,- Topography and Natural History Name and Boundaries.- The name is evidently formed from the surname Stewart, first used as a family distinction by Walter II., in 1204. The district of Cuninghame, with others in the county, being the property of the Crown, was from time to time vested in the hands of some powerful family, and Stewarton, among others, being created into a separate lordship. becoming the inheritance of James, High Steward, in 1283.In the account of the charters granted by Robert I,, II., and III., there is one by Robert III. to John Stewart Earl of Buchan, the Regent's son and Elizabeth de Douglas, his spouse, daughter to Archibald Earl of Douglas, of the lands of Stewarton, and Armsheugh and Dunlop, in Cuninghame, on the resignation of the Earl of Douglas. This parish is situated in the district of Cuninghame, and is bounded by the parishes of Neilston and Mearns in Renfrewshire-on the North-east; Fenwick, on the east and south-east;Dreghorn, on the south; Irvine and Kilwinning, on the west; and Dunlop, on the north- west and north. It's greatest length is nearly ten miles from east to west; it's breadth from south to north varies from four to three miles; it contains twenty square miles. Hydrography.- The parish possesses one mineral spring of little celebrity as yet, called Bloak Well, first discovered, nearly thirty years ago by pigeons resorting to it from the neighbouring parishes.A neat and handsome house is built over it by the proprietor, Mr Cuninghame of Lainshaw. This was done in 1833, when he appointed a keeper to take care of it.
