Journal of Modern Literature - Volume 23, Number 1, Fall 1999, pp. 145-157
Indiana University Press

Excerpt
In Death in the Afternoon , Ernest Hemingway posits a body of fictional narratees, innocent of bullfighting and clearly intended to represent his audience of English-speaking readers, whom he carefully prepares for their first bullfight. Unfortunately but not unexpectedly, most of these in-text narratees are appalled by what they see at their first corrida Hemingway enables us to date the corrida to Wednesday, 17 June 1931, and thus to identify it as the inaugural bullfight of Madrid's new bullring, Las Ventas, a historic event and the proper occasion for the Old Lady's initiation into the taurine arts.

I am presently researching a biography on David Rockefeller. An overview of the book will soon be sent to a New York City agent for circulation among all the major publishing houses. Among the topics that will be covered is the role of British USA Round Table member Rep. Wayne Hays (Demo-Ohio) in "killing" the Reece Committee investigation of tax-exempt foundations, the disappearance of the research on the Rockefeller-funded Kinsey studies and the "disposal" threats made to Reece Investigator Norman Dodd by a lobbyist for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). In 1986, Hoover scholar Antony C. Sutton published his "magnum opus" - AMERICA'S SECRET ESTABLISHMENT: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ORDER OF SKULL AND BONES. In his preface Sutton said he had been given an eight-inch batch of documents which was "nothing less than the membership lists of an American secret society. Glancing through the sheets it was more than obviousthis was no ordinary group. The names spelled Power with a capital P." Throughout the book Sutton hinted at even deeper revelations he would make in books to come. However, the full list never was published by Sutton. In making inquiries of those who knew Sutton, I was told that he had become exiled in his own country. For months I searched the Web looking for a list of the members of Skull and Bones. At long last, a notebook was given to me which required the use of a magnifying glass to make out the names. So, the following semi-final list is about 97% accurate. It opens the door to the Bones realm at a time that one of their own is now hitting the campaign trail for the Republican presidential nomination.

RLIN Record ID: Extent: .5 box Language English. Repository: Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, University of Texas at Austin
    Organizational History
The English Stage Company at the Royal Court Theatre in London was founded in 1955 by a governing council consisting of Ronald Duncan, Oscar Lewenstein, James Edward Blacksell, Benjamin Britten, and the Earl of Harewood. Well-to-do businessman Neville Blond served as chairman of the council until his death in 1970. George Devine was asked to be the company's artistic director, and he brought on Tony Richardson as his assistant. Although it was a distance from London's theater district, the Royal Court Theatre was chosen as the company's home when the original choice of the Kingsway Theatre in the West End proved to be too costly to repair. During its first season in 1956, the Royal Court staged plays by first-time playwrights, imports of foreign works, and a revival of a forgotten English classic. The company's first production, Angus Wilson's

    Donald Ogden Stewart
Biography largely from Katz's Film Encyclopedia Born in Columbus, Ohio. After WW I service in the U.S. Navy and travels in Europe, he settled in New York and began writing satirical novels, which were quite popular in the 20s (see A Parody Outline of History (1921) with illustrations by Henry Roth). In 1928 he was introduced to the theater by a college chum, Philip Barry, who wrote the part of socialite Nick Potter in his play Holiday with Stewart in mind. Stewart played the part on Broadway. Fascinated with stage life, he wrote his first play, Rebound (1930), in which he also played one of the leading parts, and followed this with a musical Fine and Dandy As early as 1925, Stewart had been assigned to adapt one of his own novels for the screen, but the project was shelved and instead he wrote an adaptation of the play Brown of Harvard, which was released in 1926. In 1930, Stewart settled in Hollywood as a screenwriter, following an appearance in a supporting part in the film NOT SO DUMB. He soon gained a reputation for his sophisticated screenplays and sparkling dialogue. He won an Academy Award for the script of THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (1940), which he adapted from the Philip Barry play.
