    VILLAGE OF ILION CEMETERY
    Part 4
    Town of German Flatts
    Herkimer County, NY
The list of the large Village of Ilion Cemetery on Benedict Avenue, in the Town of German Flatts, was donated to us by Susan Perkins of the Herkimer County Historical Society. At the time the reading was taken, the readers were able to discern 3,251 unique stones or named vaults! Names were not written down in any alphabetical order but in the order in which they started reading the stones. Since early Mohawk Valley surnames, as well as those of later 19th century immigrants, are well-represented in this cemetery, we expect many visitors to this site to find a family member. If you do, or know the relationships of people who rest here, we'd appreciate it if you'd give something back to this site by sending the site coordinators info about who you find on this list. Your information will also be posted on line in a footnotes section. If you find someone and don't have further information, a search can be ordered from the Herkimer County Historical Society.

As the twentieth century began, Los Angeles continued its pace-setting population growth, its boosters not even stopping to take a collective breath. From 11,183 people inhabiting a city of 29.21 square miles in 1880, Los Angeles achieved a more than 500% increase in 1890 to 50,395, aided and abetted by the real estate boom of the 1880s and the arrival of the Santa Fe railroad as a competitor to the Southern Pacific. Los Angeles ended the 19 th and began the 20 th century by doubling in size, to 102,479 in 1900. This number tripled in 1910, increased by 40% in 1920, and topped a million as counted in the 1930 Census. On the eve of America’s entry into World War II, the city’s size had grown to 450.83 square miles and a population of 1,504,277. To match the population growth of the City of Los Angeles (and the growth of other cities and towns in Los Angeles County) would require an infusion of industrial development, and the region was equal to the challenge. Alhambra Cemetery
    Martinez, Contra Costa County, California

The Alhambra Cemetery, or Pioneer Cemetery has suffered a great deal of vandalism and deterioration. The original survey here was made in the mid-1960s and later scanned and transcribed. This transcription is known to contain errors in both transcription and scanning, but is nevertheless valuable to the researcher.
Apparently, some of the persons originally buried in the old cemetery have been relocated to newer burial grounds. This cemetery contains many of the original area settlers and is an ideal example of the rich mixture of nationalities that made up early California.
Although there are several large families, the burials indicate a certain transience in the inhabitants of the area.
