WILLIAM SAMUEL DEARING
Born October 8, 1865 at Harrison, Boone County, Arkansas, son of Andrew N. Dearing and Barbara Caroline Dearing, nee Wilson, both born in Tennessee, whose paternal and maternal grandfathers, Sims Dearing, Fayetteville, Arkansas and Daniel Wilson, Harrison, Arkansas, were both born in Tennessee and early settlers in what is now Boone County, Arkansas. William Samuel Dearing was educated in the common and high schools of Arkansas, with Normal training in the teachers' assemblies or institutes in both Arkansas and Oklahoma Territory, and beginning when 19 years old taught for 13 years. Retiring from teaching in Oklahoma Territory after the opening of the Arapahoe and Cheyenne reservation, he engaged in the mercantile business at Independence, in Custer County, and there so continued until the construction of the railroad through that part of the county, when he removed to Thomas, a nearby railroad station, and so continued, the business later being restricted to furniture and undertaking. In 1924, after a successful career, he retired from active business. A member of the Methodist Church and a local preacher so licensed in 1896, he continued in the work of the church until his death on the 8th day of January, 1940.

  • Summer Series #1 - Man Made God Broadcast date: 30/12/2001 America's #1 Skeptic, a former self-confessed Protestant fundamentalist, Michael Shermer thinks religion is useful and that is why man made it. What he does not think is very useful is the kind of faith peddled by clairvoyants and mediums whom he regularly "exposes" in the media. Author of Why People Believe Weird Things , and editor of Skeptic magazine, Michael Shermer speaks to us from Pasadena in California. The program includes parts of a clairvoyant reading by America's top medium, James Van Praag. As well, from Penn State University Medical School in Philadelphia, we meet scientist, Andrew Newberg . He's a proponent of what he calls neuro theology . According to his research, there really is a Godspot hard-wired into our brains.
  • David and Jesus Broadcast date: 23/12/2001 Two Biblical figures, a 1000 years apart, were born in Bethlehem, both of humble beginnings and both anointed by God to be leaders of their flock. David became the Warrior King of Israel, while Jesus was the God who fell to earth. Theirs are the most intriguing lives in the Bible and this week we hear their stories. Jonathan Kirsch is the author of 'King David', and Jack Miles, who won the Pulitzer prize for his earlier biography of God, explains why God had to change himself into a man.

à BECKETT, SIR THOMAS (1836-1919),
judge, was born in London on 31 August 1836. His father, Thomas Turner à Beckett (1808-92), brother of Sir William à Beckett (q.v.), was educated at Westminster School. He came to Australia on a visit to his brother, arrived at Melbourne in January 1851, and, deciding to stay, practised as a solicitor. He was nominated to the legislative council in 1852, and after responsible government came in was elected for the Central Province in 1858. He held this seat for 20 years, was a minister without portfolio in the Heales (q.v.) ministry from November 1860 to November 1861, and commissioner of trades and customs from April 1870 to June 1871 in the third McCulloch (q.v.) ministry. He was the author of several pamphlets on legal and other subjects, and was registrar of the diocese of Melbourne from 1854 to 1887, a member of the council of the university, and a trustee of the public library. His eldest son, Thomas, came to Australia with his father in 1851, returned to London in 1856, and entered as a student at Lincoln's Inn. He won a studentship and was called to the bar in November 1859. Returning to Victoria in 1860 he quickly established a practice, specializing in equity. He was lecturer in the law of procedure for several years at the university of Melbourne from 1874 onwards, and had been leader of the equity bar for some time when he was appointed a supreme court judge in September 1886. He was just 50 years of age and did not retire until 31 July 1917, nearly 31 years later. In 1916 the bar of Victoria presented his portrait by Max Meldrum to the supreme court library, and the opportunity was taken to express the affection in which à Beckett was held. He died at Melbourne on 21 June 1919. He married in 1875 Isabella, daughter of

Thanks to Miss Rebecca Thomas, and Dot and Cooper DeRamus for compiling and sending me this list. Although this is a Hale County, Alabama Cemetery, it is located less than 3 miles from the North-West Perry County Line. When the Cemetery was started it was part of Greene County, Ala. and I was able to find the will of my Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather, Samuel Patton, who was buried in Mt. Hermon, in Eutaw, Ala, the county seat for Greene County. Anything in parenthesis has been added by family members and is NOT on the stones.

I have learned to regard fame as a will-o-wisp which, when caught, is not worth the possession; but to please a child is a sweet and lovely thing that warms one's heart and brings its own reward... - L Frank Baum Many people's knowledge of the fairyland of Oz is limited to The Wizard of Oz , either the book (the original or one of the many adulterated 'children's' versions) or the 1939 MGM film starring Judy Garland. However, there are hundreds of Oz books, and many, many film versions. And when one factors in the non-English translations , the graphic novel adaptations and the 'alternative Oz' publications, the variations number into the thousands.
