DOCUMENTOS NAVEGACION Stevenson
Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (1850-1894):

    Diez pies.

Life
Stevenson was born Robert Lewis Balfour Stevenson in Edinburgh Scotland , the son of Thomas Stevenson and grandson of Robert Stevenson , both successful lighthouse engineers, and Margaret Balfour. He studied at Edinburgh Academy in his youth. His parents were both very religious. Robert gave up the religion of his parents while studying at Edinburgh University , but the teaching that he received as a child continued to influence him. Although ill with tuberculosis from childhood, Stevenson had a full life. He began his education as an engineer but, despite his family history, he showed little aptitude and soon switched to studying law. At the age of 18 he dropped the name Balfour and changed his middle name from Lewis to Louis (but retaining the original pronunciation); from this time on he began styling himself "RLS". He turned to the law because of poor health, but he never practiced. He ended his life as a tribal leader (called by his tribe

For we are very lucky, with a lamp before the door,
And Leerie stops to light it as he lights so many more;
And O! before you hurry by with ladder and with light,
O Leerie, see a little child and nod to him tonight!
( from "The Lamplighter" by R.L.Stevenson in A Child's Garden of Verses The Stevenson House was the childhood home of Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 1894), creator of Treasure Island Kidnapped and Jekyll and Hyde , from the age of six until he finally left in 1880. Born at Edinburgh in 1850, the son of Thomas Stevenson a noted lighthouse engineer, Robert Louis Stevenson grew up in the Stevenson House at 17 Heriot Row from the age of six. Here he was cared for through many illnesses by his mother and his beloved nurse Alison Cunningham, known as 'Cummie', whom he described in the Dedication of his collection of poems for children A Child's Garden of Verses as "My second mother, my first wife". Prevented by ill-health from going much to ordinary schools, the Stevenson House was the centre of his world and his mind was nourished by ceaseless reading as well as the stories told by Cummie of ghosts, ghouls, Scottish history, and the Bible. He also travelled with his father around Scotland on his engineering business - once descending in a complete diving suit of brass helmet, lead boots etc. to view the underwater works for the harbour at Wick, in northern Scotland- as well as journeying with his parents to the Continent. Intended by his father to be trained as a civil engineer, R.L.S. matriculated at the University of Edinburgh in 1867. It was soon clear, however, that the young man was unsuited for the work and he agreed with his father to study law, to give him a steady income should writing - already his chosen path - fail him. Literature, however, had seized him. Edinburgh and the Stevenson House were still his home, and the centre of his imagination, but he began to travel more and further. London, Bournemouth, France and the Continent all drew him - for his health and sheer wanderlust. Ever and again, however, he came back to Edinburgh, that "meteorological purgatory" (

Learning Journeys Robert Louis Stevenson Biography Born in 1850, Robert Louis Stevenson grew up in Edinburgh where his father was a well-respected lighthouse engineer. Stevenson almost followed his father’s example, studying engineering at Edinburgh University, but at twenty-one decided to become a writer. His early works consist of essays and travel writing, his first book, An Inward Voyage (1878) , describes a canoe trip to Belgium and France. Despite his success with this style of writing and having been a writer of fiction since his teens, it was not until 1877 that his first work, a short story, was published. In 1882, Stevenson began to publish longer fiction and Treasure Island was serialised at this time. Kidnapped (1886) followed with critical success but it was The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) which was to bring Stevenson fame on both sides of the Atlantic. Kidnapped , a fast paced adventure tale, is also a subtle examination of Scottish history and character. These issues were to be integral to his writing.

Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, on November 13, 1850. He studied engineering at Edinburgh University, spending his summers in France, but eventually abandoned it in favor of law. However, he never practiced, having decided that he would be a writer. His first published work was an essay called "Roads" and his first books were collections of travel writings, such as An Inland Voyage . He then met his future wife Fanny, an older American woman, and traveled to California, which he described in several autobiographical works. He began writing fiction with short stories, such as A Lodging for the Night and The Pavilion of the Links and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Treasure Island was his first novel, published in 1883, which made him successful. He wrote other novels in the same style, such as Kidnapped and Catriona , as well as historical romances and stories set in the South Seas. Stevenson used a variety of genres in his works, and influenced generations of readers, although he has been condemned by critics as a "popular" writer. He died in December of 1894 and was buried in Samoa.

  • The body is a house of many windows: there we all sit, showing ourselves and crying on the passers-by to come and love us.

Stevenson was born on November 13, 1850 in Edinburgh, the son of Thomas Stevenson, a lighthouse engineer. Under his father's influence, he studied engineering and then law at the University of Edinburgh. Literature, and a bohemian lifestyle among the personalities of the Edinburgh underworld, had more claim on his attention than his studies. Stevenson suffered from a chronic bronchial condition and spent much of his life travelling abroad in search of climates which would benefit his health. His earliest works are descriptions of these journeys: An Inland Voyage (1878) describes a canoe trip through Belgium and France in 1876;

    Kings and Queens of Crime Essays on major Crime Writers Alanna Knight on Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 1894) A legend in his own lifetime, famed for the world, wide success of The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Treasure Island , news of Stevenson's early death in Samoa ( not from consumption but from a cerebral hemorrhage induced by overwork) had everyone of slight acquaintance, or none at all, rushing into print. Articles in newspapers and literary magazines evolved into dusty theses by worthy Eng. Lit. students regarding the significance of his lesser known works. More than a century later, the Stevenson cult continues. Hardly a year passes without the publication of yet another acclaimed biography. In paradise, Stevenson must smile. He entertained no exalted ideas about his writing dismissing Treasure Island as 'tushery' 'No need for psychology or fine writing. it 's awful fun, boys' stories; ' you just indulge the pleasure of your heart no trouble, no strain - just drive along as the words come and the pen will scratch.' A frail sick man all his life, he wrote out of hunger and the need to survive "
