Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894)
Robert Louis Stevenson Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh in 1850. The son of a prosperous civil engineer, he was expected to follow the family profession but finally was allowed to study law at Edinburgh University. In his early twenties he became afflicted with a severe respiratory illness from which he was to suffer for the rest of his life; it was at this time that he was determined to become a professional writer. At 26 years of age, Stevenson met Mrs. Fanny Osbourne, a married American art student who was studying in Paris. Fanny was 11 years older than Stevenson and had a son and a daughter. Stevenson fell in love with her, and in 1880, after Fanny's divorce, the two were married in Oakland, California. Due to Stevenson's constant illness, which developed into tuberculosis, he travelled from place to place hoping to improve his health. The harsh nature of the Scottish climate forced him to spend long periods abroad looking for a place where he could live and work. Stevenson and his family finally settled on the Samoan island of Upolu in 1890. He bought a large estate and built a large house that he called "Vailima" (Five Rivers). There, he was loved by the native Samoans who called him "Tusitala" (teller of tales). On December 3, 1894, at the age of 44, Stevenson died of a stroke. The natives carried his body to the peak of Mount Vaea, where they buried him. His poem "Requiem" is inscribed on his gravestone as an epitaph:

Robert Louis Stevenson, creator of the famous Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, was born at number 8 Howard Place in Edinburgh, Scotland. Although for much of his life, Stevenson was governed by the delicate heath he suffered from childhood, he became one of the world’s best-known writers. As a child, Stevenson was often bedridden with illness, and his mother and nanny spent much of this time reading him stories. Young Louis began writing his own stories when he was just six years old! Stevenson’s father, a civil engineer, took his son on tours of places that would later figure largely in his work. While his father inspected lighthouses, Louis was introduced to the rough coastline and eerie islands of Scotland. Stevenson once described his childhood interest in literature and writing: "All through my boyhood and youth, I was known and pointed out for the pattern of an idler; and yet I was always busy on my own private end, which was to learn to write. I kept always two books in my pocket, one to read, one to write in.” A student at Edinburgh University, Stevenson studied engineering and law, eventually becoming a lawyer. These fields did not interest him as much as writing, however, and when he began submitting essays to magazines, his style captured readers and critics alike.

"So l o n g as we are loved by others I should s a y that we are a l m o s t indispensable." ~ Robert Louis Stevenson The popular novelist and poet who celebrated the power of love, Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson (1850-1894) wrote such classic adventures as Treasure Island (1882) and Kidnapped (1887). He was born on this day in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father was an inspector of lighthouses. "We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world and the best that we find is an honest friend. He is a fortunate voyager who finds many. They are the end and reward of life," said Stevenson, a bedridden invalid who fought tuberculosis. "A friend is a gift you give yourself." A student of law and engineering, in 1886 he penned the chilling horror tale The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde It took him just three days to write the tale after suffering repeated nightmares about working as a respected doctor during the day and roaming the back streets of Edinburgh at night. "Man is not truly one, but truly two," he observed. He wrote over 10,000

His father (Thomas) was a prosperous second-generation civil engineer. Destined to become a third generation engineer, Robert was not born a healthy baby. Due to his lack of physical strength and also lack of interest in his father's profession, he decided to study law. He was called to the Bar in 1875, but never did practice. Since childhood he had been most interested in writing. Beginning in 1871 he started contributing to the "Edinburgh University Magazine" and the "Portfolio". In 1876 Stevenson met and fell in love with Fanny Osbourne, an American divorcee ten years his senior. In 1878 he published his first book An Inland Voyage which described a canoe trip through France and Belgium. That same year
