  • Born: 13 November 1850 Birthplace: Edinburgh, Scotland Died: 3 December 1894 (cerebral hemorrhage) Best Known As: The author of Treasure Island
Stevenson was one of the most-read adventure novelists of the late 1800s. Among his most popular books were Kidnapped The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886), and Treasure Island (1883). The latter book features Stevenson's famous crafty pirate Long John Silver. Stevenson also published a much-loved book of poems, A Child's Garden of Verse (1885). Having suffered from tuberculosis for much of his life, Stevenson spent many years travelling in search of a climate that would suit his illness. He finally settled in Samoa, where he died in 1894 and is buried. The book that some believe would have been Stevenson's best

Born in Edinburgh into a famous lighthouse engineering dynasty, Stevenson rebelled against many of the social and religious constraints being imposed on him to pursue a career as a writer. He ultimately penned many classic novels and short stories (of which he is rightly regarded as a master) including Treasure Island and Kidnapped . He was constantly dogged by tuberculosis and for this reason travelled widely in search of a more favourable climate for his health. He eventually settled in Samoa where he died in 1894, in the midst of creating yet another classic work Weir of Hermiston

    Robert Louis Stevenson
Robert Louis Stevenson was at the height of his powers when he died suddenly in Samoa in 1894. For a long period he was thought of mainly as the writer of adventure stories for children, but now there is growing recognition of his subtle and surprisingly modern explorations of dilemmas of character and action. Stevenson grew up in Edinburgh, and this profoundly shaped his writing. He was born on 13th November 1850 and from earliest childhood he was frequently ill, which influenced a fertile imagination. It was assumed that Stevenson would follow the profession of his father, Thomas Stevenson , a distinguished lighthouse and harbour engineer, and he studied engineering at Edinburgh University. However, in his twenty-first year he announced his intention of becoming a writer. He began with essays and travel writing and within a few years was recognised as a writer of great promise. His first commercially published book

Biography of Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894)
Robert Louis Stevenson In order to fully understand the world in which Stevenson was raised, it is necessary to understand that there were two Edinburghs, both which played a part in molding his personality and outlook. On one hand was New Town, respectable, conventional, deeply religious, and polite. On the other was a much more bohemian Edinburgh, symbolized by brothels and shadiness. The juxtaposition of the two aspects in contrast to each other made a deep impression and strengthened his fascination with the duality of human nature, later providing the theme for The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In the autumn of 1873, Stevenson was taken ill with nervous exhaustion and a severe chest condition, consequently, his doctor ordered him to take an extended rest abroad. For the next six months, he convalesced in the South of France, working on essays. On his return to Edinburgh, he spent much of his time writing book reviews and articles and experimenting with short stories. Slowly but surely, he earned a name for himself in journalism and his pieces began appearing in distinguished journals such as The Fortnightly Review. At this time, he met an American married woman, Fanny Vandergrift Osbourne, ten years his senior, whom was in Europe trying to escape her estranged husband's influence. For three years, Stevenson (still in ill health) continued his relationship with her and eventually followed her to San Francisco, where she obtained a divorce from her husband and married Stevenson in May 1880.

    • It seems as if marriage were the royal road through life, and realised, on the instant, what we have all dreamed on summer Sundays when the bells ring, or at night when we cannot sleep for the desire of living. They think it will sober and change them. Like those who join a brotherhood, they fancy it needs but an act to be out of the coil and clamour for ever. But this is a wile of the devil's. To the end, spring winds will sow disquietude, passing faces leave a regret behind them, and the whole world keep calling and calling in their ears. For marriage is like life in this - that it is a field of battle, and not a bed of roses.

        • Source: Virginibus Puerisque Falling in love is the one illogical adventure, the one thing of which we are tempted to think as supernatural, in our trite and reasonable world. The effect is out of all proportion with the cause. Two persons, neither of them, it may be, very amiable or very beautiful, meet, speak a little, and look a little into each other's eyes. That has been done a dozen or so of times in the experience of either with no great result. But on this occasion all is different. They fall at once into that state in which another person becomes to us the very gist and centrepoint of God's creation, and demolishes our laborious theories with a smile; in which our ideas are so bound up with the one master-thought that even the trivial cares of our own

TREASURE ISLAND (159 KB) Juvenile literature In 1883 Stevenson gained his first fame with this romantic adventure story. The central character is Jim Hawkins, whose mother keeps an inn near the coast in the West Country. Jim meets an old pirate, Billy Bones, who has in his possession a map showing the location of Captain Flint's treasure. Bones dies after a second visit of his enemies. Jim, his mother, and a blind man named Pew open Bones's sea chest and finds an oilskin packet, which contains the map. Squire Trelawney, Dr. Livesey, Jim, and a small crew with Captain Smollett sail for Treasure Island. Jim discovers that the crew of the Hispaniola includes pirates, led by a personable one-legged man named Long John Silver, who is the cook of the ship. On a journey to the island interior, Jim encounters Ben Gunn, former shipmate of the pirates. After several adventures the pirates are defeated, Jim befriends with Long John, and the treasure is found. Jim and his friends sail back to England. Long John Silver manages to escape, taking as much gold as he can carry.
