Shandy Hall
Located in the picturesque little village of Coxwold, Yorkshire, "Shandy Hall" (as Sterne called it in honor of his famous novel) is where he moved in 1760 and in the next seven years wrote the last seven volumes of Tristram Shandy . Locals testify that the site attracts many literary tourists, mostly American and Japanese. "Originally a fifteenth-century timber house of a type built by prosperous yeomen, it had probably been the house of a reeve to the abbots of Newburgh . It had undergone extensive changes in the seventeenth century: a floor had been inserted, dividing the open hall horizontally into a ground and upper storey, each partitioned into rooms and passageways. Chambers had been finished, gables cut in the roof, and a brick veneer laid over the timber walls. Sterne, with the help of Lord Fauconberg, would eventually make other changesadding the boxlike extension to the west, refurbishing bedrooms, building a stable, coachhouse, and garden summerhouse. The end product of these alterations was a charming but odd house, its formal west end contrasting with the east end, dominated by a huge medieval chimney . . ." (from Laurence Sterne: The Later Years , Arthur H. Cash, 1986)

ORIGINS OF MODERNITY
literature
Sterne, Laurence (1713-1768)
The life and opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gent.
Dublin : Thomas Armitage, 1779.
Originally published in nine short volumes from 1759-66 Tristram Shandy is a comic novel that was enormously popular during Sterne's lifetime. Such are the digressions into Tristram Shandy's eccentric family that the main character does not appear until the fourth volume. Yet this is all part of the humour of a story that takes longer to tell than the life does to live! The plates are by William Hogarth and in order to protect the work from piracy Sterne personally signed over 12,000 of the volumes.

The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman
London: 1765-1769
Hepburn 7-15
frontispiece and title-page of vol. 1 (Hepburn 7) Laurence Sterne's great comic novel, Tristram Shandy , was originally published between 1759 and 1767 in nine small separate volumes, the last appearing shortly before Sterne's death. Our set constitutes a copy made-up from several of the early editions: volumes 1 and 2 are of the seventh edition, printed for J. Dodsley and dated 1768 and 1769 respectively; volumes 3 and 4 are 'a new edition', printed in 1769 by Dodsley; volume 5 is of the second edition, printed by T. Becket and P.A. Dehondt in 1767; volume 6 is again from the 'new edition' , although printed by T. Becket and P.A. Dehondt in 1769; volumes 7, 8 and 9, lastly, are of the first edition, printed for T. Becket and P.A. Dehondt, dated 1765 and 1767. To protect his book from piracy, Sterne autographed the beginning of the first and second editions of volume 5 and the first editions of volumes 7 and 9: hence we find the author's signature in our copies of volumes 7 and 9. It has been estimated that Sterne had to sign his name an incredible 12,750 times to achieve this.

Ignatius Sancho's Friends and Family
On this page I aim to provide a little information about Ignatius Sancho's friends, family and acquaintances. The idea is not to replace more detailed biographies elsewhere, but just to briefly indicate who a particular person was, how they knew Sancho and what they were famous for, if anything. I do not intend to provide more than a paragraph for any person. If there is a particularly good website with more information about that person I have provided a link. Where there are several websites I have linked only to my favourite. I have produced three lists of names. The first is Sancho's circle : people whom we think were personally known to Sancho, but with whom, as far as we know, he did not correspond. The second list is of his known correspondents . The third, and shortest, list is of Sancho's family . Scroll down to see the whole list, or click on the above links to jump directly to those categories. My principal sources are:
  • The Dictionary of National Biography
  • Letters of the Late Ignatius Sancho: An African , ed. Vincent Carretta (London and New York: Penguin, 1998)

Famous Exhumations English Author Laurence Sterne
About the English author Laurence Sterne and his exhumation.
ANOTHER LOOKEXHUMATIONS LAURENCE STERNE (1713-1768), British novelist Sterne is credited with writing the first "modern" novel only a few years after the novel itself was invented. His classic Tristram Shandy (1760) made Sterne widely popular, and he nicknamed himself "Yorick" after the exhumed jester in Hamlet for, like Yorick, he delighted his contemporaries. Sterne died in a poor boardinghouse and was buried in Bayswater, a London cemetery notorious for grave robbing. There his body was snatched, according to popular account, and sold to Cambridge, where it was dissected by Dr. Charles Collignon. The doctor had no idea the body under his knife was one of London's most popular writers until, during the dissection, it was recognized by a spectator. All were horrified at the desecration, but Collignon is said to have kept Sterne's skull anyway, and to have added it to Cambridge's collection. Searchers there have never uncovered it. In 1968 an excavation at Sterne's original grave by the Laurence Sterne Trust uncovered several skulls, one with the top cut off as the result of a dissection (a rarity, since few were performed in Sterne's day). Correct in size and proportion for the novelist, the skull, it was theorized, had been replaced by the Cambridge doctor. The trust had it reburied as Sterne's under his gravestone at another location, but positive identification was never made. Historians and experts still disagree about the true fate of Sterne, but all admit that Sterne's grave may be occupied by someone else. "Alas, poor Yorick...," reads the highly appropriate opening line of Sterne's epitaph.

First edition of this important work with the corrected readings in both volumes: "vous" on p. 150, line 12, of vol. I, and "who have" on p. 133, last line, in vol. II. Laurence Sterne (1713-1768) is perhaps the most influential author from the 18th century relating to the modern movement. His "Sentimental Journey", Sterne's final novel, is one of the earliest examples of the "stream-of-consciousness" literary technique, which later was intellectualiced by James Joyce. Based on Sterne's two journeys abroad in 1762-64 and 1765, the work parodies the many fashionable travel accounts of the day. The narrator, "Parson Yorick", sets out on a tour of France and Italy, but at the end of the book he has travelled no further than Lyon. Provenance: The book bears the engraved amorial bookplate of Lord Gray and the bookplate of the Danish bookcollector Bent W. Dahlstrøm.
