Laurence Sterne
Novelist, born in Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland. Laurence Sterne came of a distinguished family, though he gained no advantage from it, and, having been born in Ireland where his father was stationed, he spent his youth first as a camp-follower and then as a schoolboy in Yorkshire under the guardianship of his uncle. At Cambridge, where he was a poor discontented scholar, he became friendly with John Hall-Stevenson who later in life placed at his disposal a large private library and encouraged him to join the carousing and crack-brained fun of a club called the Demoniacs which met at Crazy Castle. Apart from these bouts of conviviality, Sterne was ordained in 1738 and settled to his career as a conscientious country parson who earned some reputation both as a wit and as a preacher. Despite his growing fame in Yorkshire, he gained no ecclesiastical promotion; he became estranged from his wife, and she eventually suffered from mental collapse. In 1759, under such melancholy circumstances, he wrote he wrote the first two volumes of his eccentric and influential comic novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy . These were issued locally at his own expense; soon, however, they were so popular in London itself that he was able to obtain a contract for a new volume each year during the rest of his life.

Name: Laurence Sterne Birth Date: November 24, 1713 Death Date: March 18, 1768 Place of Birth: Clonmel, Ireland Place of Death: London, England Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: writer Laurence Sterne Main Biography The English novelist Laurence Sterne (1713-1768) produced only two works of fiction, but he ranks as one of the major novelists of the 18th century because of his experiments with the structure and organization of the novel. The English novel came of age in the 18th century. Daniel Defoe had contributed realistic detail in the 1720s; Samuel Richardson had showed the dramatic intensity inherent in the epistolary novel; Henry Fielding had combined the satirical portrayal of contemporary manners with elaborate and carefully worked-out plots. Laurence Sterne, however, published the single most idiosyncratic novel of the century, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy (1760-1767). The apparent plotlessness of

Positiveness is an absurd foible. If you are in the right, it lessens your triumph; if in the wrong, it adds shame to your defeat. Sterne, Laurence (1713-1768), novelist and English humorist, author of The life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, gentleman , one of the essential works of the English narrative of the XVIIIth century. Sterne was born in November 24 th In 1760, he settled down in London, and in spite of suffering tuberculosis he lived a social and dissolute life. His sermons (1760-1769) had a good acceptance, but the first two volumes of his most important work, the comic, intricate and picaresque novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy gentleman (1759-1767) produced a literary shock. More than for the events that it describes, Tristram Shandy highlights to reveal the thoughts and the author's feelings. It was an original and innovative work that broke the incipient conventions of the novel, confusing the expectations of their readers. He contributed original ideas about the perception, the meaning and the time that made Tristram Shandy precursor of the modern novel and of the interior monologue. He published seven more volumes between 1761 and 1767. He also published Letters to Eliza (1767), written to Eliza Draper, the most important love in his life besides his own wife. For reasons of health, from 1762 to 1764, he lived in Toulouse (France) with his wife, sick mental, and his daughter. In 1765 he carried out a long trip for France and Italy that it inspired him

'The man's head indeed was a little turned before, now topsyturvy with his success and fame.'
Horace Walpole Educated at Cambridge, Sterne took holy orders, living in Yorkshire and earning a reputation as a good country pastor. The publication of the first two volumes of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy in 1760 transformed his fortunes; he came to London to find himself famous. Reynolds painted his portrait and the two became friends. A tour of France and Italy in 1765 provided material for his A Sentimental Journey published in 1768, but he died a few months later. His body was taken by grave robbers, but such was his fame that it was recognised while being used at an anatomy lecture and secretly re-buried.
