I was from Ireland, and I lived from 1882-1950. Print or Buy my poetry? View comments Add to favorites? James Stephens was born on February 2, 1882 in Dublin, Ireland, and died December 26, 1950, in London, England.
At the age of two James' father passed away leaving his mother to fend for herself in the Dublin slums. His mother remarried or took up with another man when James was about six years of age. She abandoned her young son and he was forced to go to the Meath Protestant Industrial School for Boys. Even though his life experience at the Meath School was cruel and harsh he seem to not have held any ill-will towards his mother as it did not show up in his writings. Stephens ran away from the Meath School living on the streets and with several families willing to take him into their homes.
Stephens’s first story The Greatest Miracle was published by Arthur Griffith in The United Irishman on 16 September 1905. Griffith became good friends with Stephens and published his works in his magazine know as the Sinn Fein. From 1905-1910, Stephens attended Gaelic League classes and become involved with political meetings. During this time he published several pieces which focused on Irish national pride, the importance of learning one's Irish language and customs, and remembering the ancient saga heroes. Stephens met many of his great contemporaries during this period including George Russell (AE), George Moore, W.B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, etc.

Dear Unknown Friends: n this issue we conclude our serialization of the lecture Everyday Life and Aesthetics Look at Psychiatric Terms , which Eli Siegel gave in 1966. It is one of several lectures based on Mr. Siegel's looking at an American Psychiatric Association glossary. The lectures are wide-ranging, informal, critical, sometimes humorous, and in them is the great Aesthetic Realism understanding of the human self. We print too part of a paper by New York City high school teacher Leila Rosen, from a recent Aesthetic Realism public seminar titled “What's Real Intelligence about the World and Ourselves?” The Organic, and More he last term Mr. Siegel looks at in this lecture is epilepsy , that ailment from which Dostoevsky suffered, and, it seems, Julius Caesar. Mr. Siegel comments very swiftly—as he says, he has spoken more lengthily on the matter elsewhere. While acknowledging the possible organic “disposition” behind epilepsy, he describes the way of seeing which can have the organic proclivity take the form, at a certain time, of that terrifying thing, a seizure. I hesitated to include this short discussion of epilepsy, because Mr. Siegel is speaking informally and also briefly on the subject, and does not present here the full logic and evidence at the basis of his tremendously important explanation. Yet just

One of the leading figures of the Irish literary renaissance, Stephens is best known for his fanciful and highly colored prose writings The Crock of Gold (1912), The Demi-Gods (1914), Irish Fairy Tales (1920), Deirdre (1923), and In the Land of Youth (1924). In these works and others he made vivacious use of Irish legend and folklore. His first volume of poetry, Insurrections, appeared in 1909. Later volumes include Songs from the Clay (1915) and Kings and the Moon (1938). Possessed of a superb speaking voice, he gave many recitations of his poetry and, in later years, lectured on the radio. English 683 The Irish Short Story cmay@csulb.edu The most common assumption about Irish fiction is that the Irish are particularly gifted as short-story writers. However, because of Ireland's historically marginal status in relation to England and because of the short story's historically marginal status as a genre, many of the authors covered in this course are, with the exception of James Joyce, neglected in the English curriculum in America, in spite of the fact that many Irish stories are centrally important to the development of Irish fiction in particular and the modern short story in general.
