Songs of innocence and of experience

by William Blake The history of English literature and the history of 'the Book' coincide in an exhibition such as this. The latter expression, the history of the book, denotes an area of academic study which may be new to some people. It is a sub-set of the discipline of bibliography, broadly construed, and in some ways it may be taken to indicate a niche that has been carved out to compensate for the increasingly booklessness of much contemporary academic work. It was not all that long ago when all university education was the history of the book. There are both cultural and technological changes at work here. The sorts of social and perhaps psychic conditions under which reading used to thrive as a pastime, at all levels of society, seem now irrecoverable. Even in an area such as the study of literature, traditional processes such as wide reading have been replaced by electronic data-searching, and certainly the broad literary background which might have been expected of someone engaged in a study of English at university level a generation ago is now found very infrequently. Indeed, it is some years ago that I was told that it was possible to have completed a major in English at another of Melbourne's universities, without having had to read anything written before the Vietnam War.

Introduction The Eighteenth Century , published by Primary Source Media (now Primary Source Microfilm, an imprint of the Gale Group), is one of the largest sources of rare materials ever collected in microform. In assembling the microform edition, Primary Source Media has drawn upon The Eighteenth Century Short Title Catalogue (ESTC) , an online database created by the British Library and ESTC /North America. All eighteenth-century materials printed in any language in the British Empire, or printed in English elsewhere in the world, from 1701 to 1800 are listed in the catalogue. Upon completion, The Eighteenth Century microfilm collection is expected to contain over 200,000 items from the extensive holdings of the British Library, Harvard University Library, Huntington Library, William Andrew Clark Memorial Library (UCLA), John Rylands Memorial Library of the University of Manchester, Bodleian Library (Oxford), University of Toronto Library, McMaster University Library and numerous other institutions. The unique holdings of these libraries brought together on microfilm will be an unrivaled source of information for scholars and educators. Arrangement of the Collection The Eighteenth Century is comprised of monographs, tract volumes, broadsides, pamphlets, and printed ephemera. Accounts of trials, wills, moral instruction, sermons, prose and poetry, music, and medical treatises are some examples of the wide range of materials to be found within the collection. King Billy's bombs seen again at Limerick: excavators find unexploded shells that were meant to blow houses apart
Unexploded shells and other military evidence from William III's siege of Limerick in 1690-91 have come to light in the centre of the city. The legendary siege formed part of William's campaign to crush his father-in-law James II's catholic armies in Ireland, and followed his victory at the Boyne north of Dublin earlier in the year. The siege failed, leading to the Treaty of Limerick in 1691 which the English promptly dishonoured - to lasting infamy. William's tactic was to bombard the bridge linking Limerick's twin walled settlements on either side of the Abbey River, a branch of the Shannon. Excavations in the river near the bridge, in advance of a drainage scheme, have produced three complete mortar shells with gunpowder and fuses intact and numerous fragments of exploded shells. Also found were about 50 cannon balls, musket and pistol balls, gunflints, a bayonet, buttons and badges from the period, and an ornate hilt from a 17th century rapier. The mortar shells, each the size of a basketball and weighing up to 15 stone, are among the very few intact examples known that have been fired in anger. Described as `Tom and Jerry bombs' by the excavator, Ed O'Donovan of Margaret Gowen Limited, they have the classic cartoon-bomb appearance - round, hollow spheres full of gunpowder with a hole in the top and a fuse sticking out.

Richard Steele (1672 1729) and Joseph Addison produced the hugely influential Sir Richard Steele, The Tatler, ed. Lewis Gibbs (London, 1953)
http://www.soton.ac.uk/~sdb2/steele.htm
Sir Richard Steele, [from] The Tatler , no. 169, May 9, 1710 In the first decades of the eighteenth century, Richard Steele (1672 - 1729) and Joseph Addison produced the hugely influential journals, The Tatler and The Spectator . Written for an audience drawn largely from the middle ranks of society, the larger task of these journals was to create a ‘polite’ society in which social divisions based on wealth and rank would be eased by a shared set of cultural values and an agreed code of behaviour. Implicit in such writing is a plea for the reform of the aristocracy after the perceived excesses of the Restoration. In The Spectator , the figure of Sir Roger de Coverley appears as a quirky but admirable throwback to an earlier generation of patrician country gentleman (see nos. 106-23): Sir Roger keeps a firm but benevolent grip on his tenants, ensures they attend church, looks to their needs, and in seeing his estate as more than a set of rights and rents creates an idyllic country community. In the extract from The Tatler which we reproduce here, Steele goes a step further by providing us with an aristocratic landlord who avoids even Sir Roger’s quirks. For Steele, the ideal owner of a country estate is not a mere ‘incumbent’ but a ‘landlord’ in the true sense (cf. Jonson’s claim in
