THE LIFE OF RICHARD STEELE.
London: 1889 Two volumes. pp. (x), 419; (8), 452 + Plates. 8vo. 24 cm. Original red publisher's cloth binding. Very nice set. Sir Richard Steele (1672-1729) was born in Dublin, and became the most celebrated essayist and playwright of his era. He was educated at Charterhouse (while Addison attended), and went to Merton College, Oxford. He briefly entered the army, and reacted to the military life by taking up writing. He quickly authored three successful comedies; served as gentleman waiter to Prince George of Denmark; and in 1707 became an editor of the London Gazette.
Steele recognized the enormous possibilities of periodical literature distributed by post-coaches, and founded (with Addison) two of the greatest efforts of that genre. The 'Tatler' (1709-1711) and the 'Spectator' (1711-1712) exposed the affectations, conceits, vices, and corruptions of all levels of society to the derision of humorous satire and comedic caricature. Along with moral, literary, and political comments we can find here too the beginnings of the modern novel.
In 1713 Steele entered parliament, but was expelled the following year because of his pamphleteering and publishing in support of the House of Hanover. Upon the succession of George I he was rewarded for his attachment to that cause with a knighthood, and supervision of the Drury Lane Theatre. After disagreements with Addison, who was in the ministry, he lost his office, and retired to Wales.

The Life of Richard Steele
STEELE, SIR RICHARD (1672-1729)
Richard Steele lived to see four monarchs reign over England: King William and Queen Mary, jointly; Queen Anne; and King George I. He was born in Dublin on March 12, 1672.
He was born in the same year as his friend and writing collaborator, Joseph Addison, whom he met as a boy of twelve at Charterhouse in 1684. Addison and Steele continued their friendship in university and throughout most of their lives. The pair worked together on the periodical, the Tatler.
Steele attended Christ Church Oxford, and later Merton College, and held the position of postmaster at Merton.
He fought a duel with Captain Kelly in Hyde Park in 1700, which severely injured the latter man. It turned Steele off this tradition for the rest of his life.
Steele frequently coffee houses to consume both the novel beverage and social gossip.
He lived in a time when politicians rewarded literary work. The two spheres overlapped in many spots.
He received the following positions when George I ascended the throne: Justice of the Peace, Deputy Lieutenant of Middlesex, Surveyor of the Royal Stables, Governor of the Royal Company of Comedians. As well, he was knighted in 1715.

It would be good for religion if many books that seem useful were destroyed. When there were not so many books and not so many arguments and disputes, religion grew more quickly than it has since.
Girolamo Savonarola , opposing the revival of human scholarship by urging the destruction of collections of classic literature, in Jacob Burckhardt, The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy (1960), p. 336, quoted from Helen Ellerbe, The Dark Side of Christian History The only good thing that we owe to Plato and Aristotle is that they brought forward many arguments which we can use against the heretics. Yet they and other philosophers are now in hell.

Addison, Joseph
The eldest son of a cleric, Addison eventually found himself at Oxford (Queen's and Magdalen). He wrote favourable (whether commissioned, or not) articles concerning certain powerful people and their works; he was duly rewarded with a pension of £300 which allowed Addison to travel extensively throughout the continent for four years. With the victory at Blenheim , in 1704, Addison was commissioned to write The Campaign and this led to further political patronage; he was appointed as a Commissioner of Excise Taxes (the only significant taxes they had in those days). The job as a commissioner, presumably, took little of Addison's time and he was left to pursue his writing. While he had contributed to the Tatler (started by Steele in 1709), Addison started his own paper in 1711, the Spectator ("In the Spectator may be traced the foundations of all that is sound and healthy in modern English thought." The first blogger, 1709
Reporting from last week's reboot conference, Joho heard about The first blogger from Ben Hammersley: The effervescent Ben Hammersley argues that Richard Steele was the first blogger, publishing his first post was on April 12, 1709. He posted three times a week, ran comments, had 800 readers, and drank lots of coffee. "This guy is a blogger." Who is Richard Steele? About.com says that he is (1672-1729) Irish writer. Pseudonym of Isaac Bickerstaff. Sir Richard Steele was an essayist, dramatist, journalist, and politician. His works include: "The Funeral" (1701), "The Lying Lover" (1703), "The Tender Husband" (1705), and "The Conscious Lovers." I love the allusion to coffee creating fueling the writing of essayists and bloggers.
